The 2010 Tour of Qatar was the ninth edition of the Tour of Qatar cycling stage race. It was rated as a 2.1 event on the UCI Asia Tour, and was held from 7 February to 12 February 2010, in Qatar. The race was won by Wouter Mol of Vacansoleil.
Teams
Sixteen teams competed in the 2010 Tour of Qatar. These included ten UCI ProTour teams, five UCI Professional Continental teams, and one Continental team. Each team entered a squad of eight riders, giving the Tour a peloton of 128 riders.
The same sixteen teams contested the inaugural Tour of Oman, which began on February 14. The teams' squads were expected to be similar for both events, with the individual time trial which closes out the Tour of Oman providing for the only minor changes.
During the night after stage 4 Belgian cyclist Frederiek Nolf of the Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator team died in his sleep of a suspected heart attack. The organisers cancelled stage 5 and held a 'cycling procession' instead.
The 2014 Tour of Qatar was the 13th edition of the Tour of Qatar cycling stage race. It was rated as a 2.HC event on the UCI Asia Tour, and was held between 9 and 14 February 2014, in Qatar.
The race was won by Omega Pharma–Quick-Step rider Niki Terpstra, who won the opening stage of the race and held the lead throughout. Second place went to his team-mate Tom Boonen, who won two stages and the points classification, while third place went to Jürgen Roelandts of the Lotto–Belisol squad. The young rider classification was won by another Omega Pharma–Quick-Step rider, Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, while the teams classification was also won by Omega Pharma–Quick-Step, after five of the team's eight riders– Terpstra, Boonen, Van Keirsbulck (seventh), Stijn Vandenbergh (eighth) and Andrew Fenn (ninth)– finished in the top ten overall.
Teams
Nineteen teams competed in the 2014 Tour of Qatar. These included thirteen UCI World Tour teams, five UCI Professional Continental teams and the Skydive Dubai Pro Cycling Team.
Qatar (/ˈkæˌtɑːr/,i/ˈkɑːtɑːr/, /ˈkɑːtər/ or i/kəˈtɑːr/;Arabic:قطرQaṭar[ˈqɑtˤɑr]; local vernacular pronunciation: [ɡɪtˤɑr]), officially the State of Qatar (Arabic:دولة قطرDawlat Qaṭar), is a sovereigncountry located in Southwest Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. A strait in the Persian Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island of Bahrain, as well as sharing sea borders with the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. Qatar has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-19th century. Qatar is a hereditary constitutional monarchy and its head of state is Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The constitution was overwhelmingly approved in a constitutional referendum, with almost 98% in favour. In 2013, Qatar's total population was 1.8 million: 278,000 Qatari citizens and 1.5 million expatriates. After Saudi Arabia and Oman, Qatar is the most conservative society in the Gulf Cooperation Council.
The 2011 AFC Asian Cup finals were held in Qatar on 7–29 January 2011. It was the fifteenth time the tournament has been held, and the second time it has been hosted by Qatar, the other being the 1988 AFC Asian Cup. Japan won the cup after a 1–0 win against Australia, and earned the right to compete in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil as the representative from AFC.
A television viewing audience of 484 million in 80 countries across the Asia-Pacific region, Europe, North America and North Africa witnessed Japan defeat Australia 1–0 in the final.
Host selection
Qatar, India and Iran all lodged interest in hosting the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, while Australia also considered making a late bid. Qatar officially submitted their bid on 19 June 2006, while India withdrew their interest and Iran failed to submit proper documentation for their bid on time.
Qatar was announced as host nation on 29 July 2007, during the 2007 AFC Asian Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. Due to FIFA regulations stating that confederation events can be hosted either in January or July, and July being peak summer heat in the Middle East, it was also announced that the tournament would be held in January of that year.
