Professional cycling teams are divided into several tiers: the top teams are UCI WorldTeams and are automatically entitled and obliged to enter all World Tour races. The organisers of each race are also permitted to invite other teams – generally UCI Professional Continental teams – to compete alongside the WorldTeams. The UCI selects the teams based on sporting, ethical, financial and administrative criteria. The number of WorldTeams is limited to 18. In October 2015, 17 teams were WorldTeam status by the UCI; these were the same teams that competed in the 2015 UCI World Tour. In November, the final WorldTeam licence was awarded to Team Dimension Data, which had previously competed at Professional Continental level as MTN–Qhubeka. There were therefore a total of 18 teams selected for the 2016 World Tour.
After winning the 2008 UCI ProTour, Spain's Alejandro Valverde won his first World Tour individual points title, amassing 686 points over the course of the season. The Movistar Team rider finished 66 points clear of his closest rival and compatriot Alberto Contador of Tinkoff–Saxo, while Australian rider Simon Gerrans was third for the Orica–GreenEDGE team, but was over 200 points in arrears of Valverde. In the teams' rankings, Movistar Team finished top for the second year running, with a total of 1440 points. Second place went to the BMC Racing Team after taking overall victories in two of the season's last three races, while Tinkoff–Saxo finished in third position. The nations' rankings was comfortably headed by Spain, with a points advantage of 764 over Italy.
The 2011 UCI World Tour was the third edition of the ranking system launched by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) in 2009. The series started with the Tour Down Under's opening stage on 18 January, and consisted of 14 stage races and 13 one-day races, culminating in the Giro di Lombardia on 15 October.
Events
All 26 events from the 2010 UCI World Ranking were included, though the UCI ProTour classification of events under which 16 of these were previously promoted has now been disbanded. In addition to this, the five stage Tour of Beijing has been added to the schedule.
The 18 teams that hold UCI ProTeam status are obliged to participate in all races. The organisers of each race can additionally invite other teams that hold UCI Pro-Continental status, or an ad-hoc national selection, to compete.
†: Riders promoted after removal of the results of Alberto Contador.
Final standings
In a change from previous years, only riders of a UCI ProTeam were to be able to score points for the world ranking. However, in early 2012, the UCI included such riders in a revised table, but non ProTour teams were still omitted from the team rankings. This was subsequently reverted, and the 52 non ProTeam riders were again removed from the calculations.
UCI World Tour, the premier annual male elite road cycling tour
World Tour (bodyboarding), the men's international bodyboarding tour, which started at 1994 and has undergone a few changes in names and regulations since
The 2010 World Tour was a concert tour by rock band ZZ Top, which began in April 2010 and ended in December 2010. Like recent previous tours, it was a short outing, though for the first time in the band's career, they performed in South America, including three shows in Brazil. The band played many of their classic 1970s and 1980s hits. Critical reaction to the tour's shows was generally positive, although the absence of new material was noted. A great number of tickets were sold within a month of the tour's announcement, which prompted more dates to be added.
The MDNA Tour was the ninth concert tour by American singer-songwriter Madonna. It showcased material from her twelfth studio album, MDNA (2012). The tour visited the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East. This marked the singer's first performances in the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine, Scotland, and Colombia. The tour was initially planned to reach Australia in January 2013 but was cancelled; Madonna apologized through a video letter on her official YouTube account.
Madonna described the tour as "the journey of a soul from darkness to light". It was divided into four sections: Transgression, where guns and violence was the main theme, Prophecy, where a mix of joyful songs that bring people together are performed, Masculine/Feminine, a combination of sensuality and fashion with a few of Madonna's classic songs performed in a French Cabaret-style, and Redemption, which Madonna labeled as "a big party and celebration". The tour has received mostly positive reception from critics.
