The English language spoken and written in England encompasses a diverse range of accents and dialects. The dialect forms part of the broader British English, along with other varieties in the United Kingdom. Terms used to refer to the English language spoken and written in England include: English English,Anglo-English,British English, and British English in England.
The related term "British English" has "all the ambiguities and tensions in the word "British" and as a result can be used and interpreted in two ways, more broadly or more narrowly, within a range of blurring and ambiguity" but is usually reserved to describe the features common to English English, Welsh English, and Scottish English (England, Wales and Scotland are the three traditional countries on the island of Great Britain; the main dialect of the fourth country of the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, is Ulster English, which is generally considered a sub-dialect of Hiberno-English).
The local topography is flat and in some places lies below sea level, for example in the Fens that lie to the east of Peterborough. Human settlement in the area began before the Bronze Age, as can be seen at the Flag Fen archaeological site to the east of the current city centre also with evidence of Roman occupation. The Anglo-Saxon period saw the establishment of a monastery, Medeshamstede, which later became Peterborough Cathedral.
It now consists of the City of Peterborough and the municipalities of Douro-Dummer, Trent Lakes, Havelock-Belmont-Methuen, North Kawartha and Selwyn plus the Curve Lake First Nation.
History
The riding's borders have differed slightly since its creation in 1953, but has always included most or all of Peterborough County and its county seat of Peterborough, Ontario. Prior to 1952, the riding was split in two, sometimes partly joined to neighbouring Hastings County. Since 1999, the riding boundaries and names of the provincial and federal electoral districts have been identical.
It was created in 1953 from Peterborough Westriding. It consisted initially of the city of Peterborough and the townships of Galway, Cavendish, Harvey, Ennismore, Smith, Douro, Otonabee, and North Monaghan. In 1966, the townships of Galway, Cavendish and Harvey were removed from the riding, and the townships of Belmont and Methuen, Dummer, Smith and Asphodel (excluding the Village of Hastings) were added.
Peterborough/ˈpiːtərbɔːroʊ/PEE-tər-bur-oh is a city on the Otonabee River in Central Ontario, Canada, 125 kilometres (78mi) northeast of Toronto. According to the 2011 Census, the population of the City of Peterborough was 78,698. The population of the Peterborough Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), which includes the surrounding Townships of Selwyn, Cavan Monaghan, Otonabee-South Monaghan, and Douro-Dummer, was estimated in 2014 at 123,270. It presently has the 33rd largest CMA in Canada. The current mayor of Peterborough is Daryl Bennett.
Peterborough's nickname is "The Electric City" as it was the first town in Canada to use electric streetlights. It also underscores the historical and present-day importance of technology and manufacturing as an economic base of the city, which has operations from large multi-national companies such as Siemens, Rolls Royce, and General Electric, and more local technology businesses such as Fisher Gauge and Bryston. Electricity was one of the reasons Quaker Oats moved to the city, and as part of PepsiCo, remains a major fixture in the downtown area to this day.
Great Britain and Ireland was a set of special commemorativepostage stamps issued by the Royal Mail in 2006. The stamps were the final part of the British Journey series, which had previously featured Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales. It was available as mint stamps, as a presentation pack, stamps cards, and a first day cover.
British Journey series
These stamps are the final issue in the British Journey series; which started in 2003 with Scotland, followed in 2004 with Northern Ireland and Wales, and South West England in 2005. The series was brought to a premature end with this issue due to a lack of popularity amongst collectors.
Stamp details
The stamps were issued as a block of stamps, five wide by two deep. The photographs selected for this issue show no sky but are intended to demonstrate the colours and textures of the United Kingdom. All values are first class.
England were a progressive rock group active in the late 1970s, and briefly reformed in 2006. The band is notable for their album Garden Shed released on Arista Records, and for keyboardist Robert Webb playing a Mellotron sawn in half.
Biography
The band was formed in 1975 by drummer Mark Ibbotson, and, after a variety of prototype groups, stabilised around a line-up of himself, bassist Martin Henderson, guitarist Jamie Moses and keyboardist Robert Webb. Moses and Webb had previously collaborated on an unreleased album. Ibbottson owned a Mk II Mellotron, which Webb took an interest in, later saying "it opens up possibilities. It's having control like the conductor of an orchestra." To make the instrument portable, Webb sawed the instrument in half, rehousing the left-hand manual and the right-hand tapes (which contained the lead sounds on a Mk II model) it in a new case. After a number of gigs at the Hazlitt Theatre in Maidstone, Moses quit and was replaced by Franc Holland. In March 1976, immediately following a showcase gig that resulted in a contract with Arista Records, Ibbotson quit the band and was replaced by Jode Leigh.

Prof. Tony Lynch - The Importance of Listening to International Students
Professor Tony Lynch, Personal Chair of Student Learning (English for Academic Purposes), presented his inaugural lecture entitled "The Importance of Listening to International Students".
The title is intentionally ambiguous. It refers firstly to the importance for international students of having adequate comprehension of spoken English; and it also alludes to the importance for the University of taking account of international students' perceptions of studying at Edinburgh.
In the lecture, Prof Lynch addresses both these issues. In the first part he draws on his research into the experience of second language listeners, in order to outline the processes underlying comprehension, the problems likely to arise, and possible solutions to those difficulties.

Where did English come from? - Claire Bowern
View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/where-did-english-come-from-claire-bowern
When we talk about ‘English’, we often think of it as a single language. But what do the dialects spoken in dozens of countries around the world have in common with each other, or with the writings of Chaucer? Claire Bowern traces the language from the present day back to its ancient roots, showing how English has evolved through generations of speakers.
Lesson by Claire Bowern, animation by Patrick Smith.

In the second part he discuss postgraduates' responses to an ELTC (English Language Teaching Centre) survey on linguistic and cultural aspects of studying at Edinburgh. He argues that relatively minor adjustments by and for international students would help smooth their path to academic success.

Why is Peterborough the worst city in England? If you’re one of my subscribers, you no doubt would have seen at least one of my videos about Peterborough. How I wish I had an opportunity to rank Peterborough among good cities! Unfortunately, the reverse has been the case. It’s been found among the five most hated cities in the United Kingdom. It once ranked among the worst cities to live in England. Please try and see my videos on this to understand the background. Responses from my subscribers who know enough to really comment about Peterborough show that the city deserves more attention. And we’ve vowed not to relent until things change there. Therefore, we are now fully focusing on Peterborough as the worst city to live in England.

Where Is Peterborough?
Peterborough is such a famous city that doesn’t need to be described to anyone who knows a thing or two about cities in the UK. However, since there’s no harm in reiteration, we’ll take this route for the umpteenth time. Peterborough is a cathedral city and unitary authority area in Cambridgeshire. It was initially part of Northamptonshire before it was ceded to the present county in 1974.
It is located on the Nene River which flows some 30 miles (or 49 kilometers) to the northeast. Peterborough is about 76 miles (122 kilometers) from London. The city with the motto: “upon this rock I will build my church” is far cry from what the leader that made the promise over two thousand years ago had in mind. Today, people who know the city claim that Peterborough is the worst city to live in England.
A View From the Past
The city whose original name was Medeshamstede before it was later changed to Burgh and later to what it is now, together with its surrounding areas has been inhabited for thousands of years. The city may have been established as early as 44 AD because the archeological finds from the first century contain numerous references to Peterborough in its original name. Going by that original name, it was likely an Anglian settlement around 655 AD when Sexwulf established a monastery on the parcel of land granted to him by Peada of Mercia. It was an important center for ceramic production during Roman civilization. Throughout the Middle Ages, the city featured in the history of Britain. It played some roles during the civil war.
The modern history that can help us understand how Peterborough inherited what would turn it into the worst city in England began in the 1840s. That was when railway lines began operating locally. The Great Northern Railway line from London to York was opened in 1850 and it transformed Peterborough from just a market town to an industrial center.
The rise and fall of various industries including brickmaking, sugar, and woodwork, contributed to the current plight of the city.
Peterborough Today
Today's Peterborough covers an area of 132.58 square miles or 348.38 square kilometers. This is where you find over 200,000 people, most of who are unhappy with their city. Interestingly, Peterborough is a multi-ethnic society. About 82.5 percent of the city's residents are white, 11.7 percent Asian, 2.3 percent black, and 0.8 percent others, while 2.8 percent of the residents are mixed race. The population started growing rapidly with the arrival of railways in the 19th century. While the Second World War dealt some blow to this city’s population, it was designated a New Town in 1960.
It thereafter stopped being a center for brick manufacture and industrial employment fell. Today, most of the jobs available in the city are in financial services and distribution. Peterborough is at the Junction 15 of the A1/A1 (M) primary route.

Just last month, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a “Code Red” report reinforcing the dire need to take climate action now. This report emphasized just how little time is left to act on the intensifying climate crisis.
This event was part of 100 Debates on the Environment occurring over two nights across Canada organized by GreenPAC. The goal of these debates is to make the environment an issue that no party and no candidate can ignore by organizing non-partisan, all-candidates debates on the environment in ridings across Canada. Peterborough organized a similar debate in 2019 which took place at Stohn Hall at Trent University. Approximately 300 people attended, requiring use of an overflow room.
This debate was open to anyone to attend and share questions with the candidates. All participants had to register in advance at the Zoom link.
The event was coordinated by Camp Kawartha, the Council for Canadians (Peterborough Chapter), the Federation of Ontario Cottagers Association, For Our Grandchildren, GreenUP, Kawartha World Issues Centre, Peterborough Alliance for Climate Action, Peterborough Youth Empowerment, Rotary ECO Club, the Trent School of the Environment, and the Unitarian Fellowship of Peterborough.

🗽 American English vs. British English ☕
Sometimes it’s different pronunciation, and sometimes it’s just completely different words! Know any more word differences? Share them with us in the comments! 👇
One Language, Three Accents! In this video, we're showing you the differences between American English, British English, and Australian English. First, we'll show you the difference between an American accent, a British accent, and an Australian accent by reading some simple words that are spelled the same in every country. Then, our native speakers will say different words that have the same meaning. And finally, our American, British, and Australian speakers will say words that sound the same, and have the same meaning, but are spelled differently.
This is a brief introduction to the differences in English pronunciation. For more language comparison videos, subscribe to Language of Earth on YouTube at YouTube.com/LanguageofEarth.
Have an idea for a future video? Is there another language that could be used to show "One Langauge, Three Accents"? Let us know in the comments below!
In the second part he discuss postgraduates' responses to an ELTC (English Language Teaching Centre) survey on linguistic and cultural aspects of studying at Edinburgh. He argues that relatively minor adjustments by and for international students would help smooth their path to academic success.
You can download the supporting slides for this lecture here: http://edin.ac/2kAvPSO
Recorded on Wednesday 16 May 2012 at the Auditorium lecture theatre, Business School, The University of Edinburgh.

On September 8, 2021, a group of local organizations hosted a virtual debate on the environment and climate change. The four Peterborough-Kawartha candidates participated. Over 200 members of the public attended and contributed questions..
After a summer of record-breaking heat waves, wildfires destroying towns, and smoke covering the country, climate change is the top issue for voters.
“The urgency of the climate emergency is clear,” says Malaika Collette, an organizer of this event, member of Peterborough Youth Empowerment, and an alumnus of the Youth Leadership in Sustainability Program at the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board. “Making an informed vote in this election is crucial to a decisive decade for climate action.”
As candidates hit the campaign trail for the 2021 federal election, CPAC’s Campaign Politics takes you into closely watched races across the country. Meet the candidates and dive into the issues at the grassroots level.
Walking down the street in the city Now I am one of the boys, looking pretty And people turn their heads as I walk by And girls says to me; if you don’t want me I must die But I ignore them, I aint got the time I keep on walking as horny girls stand in line ‘Cause I know they are after my shoes My tiny red dr. martens boots I know, I know Everybody wants my dr. martens boots Went into a pub to get a beer When everybody stopped talking and started to stare The pub owner said; you’ll get anything for free But I know what he wanted out of me I can’t just give away my new air wear Then I could go around naked for what I care My martens is the only thing I wear My martens is the only thing I hold dear
