Battle of Mogadishu (1993) also known as Battle of the Black Sea or The Day of the Rangers: part of Operation Gothic Serpent/Code Irene. United States, Pakistani, and Malaysian forces fought forces of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid
Fall of Mogadishu (2006): The Transitional Federal Government and Ethiopian Army attacked and captured the city held by the Islamic Courts Union

Battle of South Mogadishu, a two-day armed clash in February, 2009, between the TFG and Hizbul Islam
Battle of Mogadishu (2009), a 6 month stand-off between al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam rebels and the TFG-ARS Alliance, involving 7 rounds of high intensity violence
The Battle of Mogadishu (2009) started with an Islamist offensive, when rebels from al-Shabaab and Hizbul Islam attacked and captured government bases in the capital of Mogadishu, the fighting soon spread causing hundreds of casualties. It ended up becoming the largest battle in Mogadishu since the Ethiopian withdrawal in January. The Islamist offensive lasted from 8 May to 14 May and ended with relative success as they managed to take control over most of the capital, while ARS-D and government (TFG) forces withdrew into AMISOM protected territories. But despite major gains, the rebels failed to topple the government during the eight days of fighting and small scale clashes continued until 22 May, when the government launched a major offensive to retake the city, as Islamist forces had mostly withdrawn into the Central Region and the government was now backed by powerful warlord Indho Ade.
The government offensive initially had some success as they captured a few bases, however in a matter of hours the Islamist launched a successful counter offensive and re-captured the lost areas and made even more gains. As a result, the government offensive was aborted on 23 May.
The Battle of Mogadishu or Day of the Rangers (Somali:Maalintii Rangers), was part of Operation Gothic Serpent and was fought on the 3rd and 4 October 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between forces of the United States, supported by UNOSOM II, and Somali militiamen loyal to the self-proclaimed president-to-be Mohamed Farrah Aidid, who had support from armed civilian fighters. The battle is also referred to as the First Battle of Mogadishu to distinguish it from subsequent battles in that city, such as the Second Battle of Mogadishu of 2006.
The initial U.S. Joint Special Operations force, Task Force Ranger, was a collaboration of various elite special forces units from Army Special Operations Command, Air Force Special Operations Command and Navy Special Warfare Command. Task Force Ranger was dispatched to seize two of Aidid's high-echelon lieutenants during a meeting in the city. The goal of the operation was achieved, though conditions spiraled into the deadly Battle of Mogadishu. The initial operation of 3 October 1993, intended to last an hour, became an overnight standoff and rescue operation extending into daylight hours of 4 October.
Mogadishu (/ˌmɔːɡəˈdiːʃuː/;Somali:Muqdisho; Arabic:مقديشوMaqadīshū), known locally as Xamar (English:Hamar), is the largest and capital city of Somalia. Located in the coastal Banaadir region on the Indian Ocean, the city has served as an important port for centuries. As of 2015, it has a population of 2,120,000 residents.
Tradition and old records assert that southern Somalia, including the Mogadishu area, was historically inhabited by hunter-gatherers. These were later joined by Cushitic agro-pastoralists, who would go on to establish local aristocracies. During its medieval Golden Age, Mogadishu was ruled by the Muzaffar dynasty, a vassal of the Ajuran Sultanate. It subsequently fell under the control of an assortment of local Sultanates and polities, most notably the Geledi Sultanate. The city later became the capital of Italian Somaliland (1889-1936) in the colonial period. After the Somali Republic became independent in 1960, Mogadishu became known and promoted as the White Pearl of the Indian Ocean. After the ousting of the Siad Barre regime in 1991 and the ensuing civil war, various militias fought for control of the city, later to be replaced by the Islamic Courts Union in the mid-2000s. The ICU thereafter splintered into more radical groups, notably Al-Shabaab, which fought the Transitional Federal Government (2004-2012) and its AMISOM allies. With a change in administration in late 2010, government troops and their military partners had succeeded in forcing out Al-Shabaab by August 2011. Mogadishu has subsequently experienced a period of intense reconstruction.
Mogadishu, or Mogadiscio, was the capital of Italian Somalia in the first half of the 20th century. In Italian language, the city was called Mogadiscio italiana and the inhabitants were called Mogadiscini. Italian Mogadiscio was under Italian control from 1885 until February 1941: officially it disappeared in 1947 after the "Peace Treaty" following WWII when Italy lost all the colonies.
History
The first Italian to write about Mogadiscio was Marco Polo, who knew of the city during his merchant travels in Asia. But the Italians showed up in Mogadishu's history only in the late 19th century, when the commerce company "Filonardi" from Italy took control of facilities in the port of Mogadishu.
By 1882, Mogadishu was under the joint control of the Somali Geledi Sultanate (which was also holding sway over the Shebelle Valley region in the interior called Benadir) and the OmaniSultan of Zanzibar. In 1885, Ali bin Said leased the city to an Italian chartered company owned by Vincenzo Filonardi. This "Compagnia Filonardi" (1893–96) -and later the "Società Anonima Commerciale Italiana del Benadir" (1899-1905)- was finally taken by the Italian government, that obtained the control of the entire region of Benadir with the port of Mogadishu through an agreement with the British government in 1892. From 3 August 1889 to 15 May 1893 Filonardi was the first Governor of the "Somalia italiana" (he was governor again from 1896 to 1897).
Mogadishu hijacking, in 1977 a Lufthansa Boeing 737 was hijacked by the PFLP and flown to Mogadishu where it was stormed by the GSG 9. The rescue operation was codenamed Feuerzauber (Fire Magic).
Mogadishu Islamic Courts, a group of Sharia Courts who united themselves to form a rival administration to the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia.
Col. (ret) Larry Perino, Col. (ret) Lee VanArsdale, and Master Sgt. (ret) Kyle Lamb, all participants in Operation Gothic Serpent, reflect on the events that took place twenty-five years ago during the Battle of Mogadishu in an event organized by the Modern War Institute at West Point.

The Battle of Mogadishu
The Battle of Mogadishu was 18 hours of the most intense urban combat experienced by US troops since the Vietnam War. Unorganized blocks of concrete buildings, sparse trees, and dilapidated shacks topped with corrugated metal made for a chaotic battlefield. The downing of two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters on Oct. 3, 1993, changed what was supposed to be a fairly straightforward raid into a desperate rescue mission.

Timeless take away
This was taken from the end of an NBC Dateline piece on the events surrounding the death of one particular Ranger, Sergeant James Casey Joyce, during the notorious "Black Hawk Down" battle. It aired in the summer of 94.
At the end, then Lt DiTomasso (retired as LCol) and Sgt Keni Thomas poignantly describe what they hoped people will take away from the sad losses suffered that day.

On this day in 1993, the Battle of Mogadishu went down. Most recognize the events of this battle from the film Black Hawk Down.

The now infamous peace-keeping mission in Somalia, now commonly known as 'Black Hawk Down' through the smash-hit film, took place back in 1993, and was a pivotal point for the US military.
This documentary tells the true story of what actually happened, by the serviceman that actually took part, in what was supposed to be a quick 'in & out' mission.

LIfe is never fair, man will let you down It's how you face your obstacles, react to things around And I will not stand still, I'll hold my head up high My heart is big, my passion strong, you cannot stop this drive I know you though that this battle had been won But I will reassure you that this battle's just begun Get out of my way, today is the day that I am breaking free From all of your thoughts and all of your words that tried to bring down me - You should have thought long and you should have thought hard before you tossed me out - 'Cause this old Tulsa boy who plays the keys and writes these melodies is gonna rock this town Let my life speak loud to all of you around No matter what they say to you, they cannot hold you down Your dreams and goals are bigger than your opposition's words So brush 'em off and forget them, it's time to go change the world I know you though that this battle had been won But I will reassure you that this battle's just begun Get out of my way, today is the day that I am breaking free From all of your thoughts and all of your words that tried to bring down me - You should have thought long and you should have thought hard before you tossed me out - 'Cause this old Tulsa boy who plays the keys
