Theodora FitzGibbon (née Rosling; second marriage name Morrison), (1916–1991) was an Irish cookery writer, model and actress.
Early life
Born on October 21, 1916 in London. Daughter of John Archibald Rosling and Alice Winfred Hodgins. Theodora was educated at a number of convents, including the Sacre Coeur in Bruges and St Joseph's, Hendon. She travelled widely with her father in India, Europe and the Middle East. It is said that she received cooking lessons from the former Queen Natalie of Serbia at a finishing school in Paris.
Modeling and acting
Age 18 she went on stage in repertory theatre in Birmingham and Coventry and joined a touring company, the English Players, in France. She appeared in Anthony Asquith's film Freedom Radio (1941) and acted on the stage in London on the West End. She also modelled for a fashionable couturier, Robert Traquair.
Relationships and friends
She met the photographer and surrealist painter Peter Rose Pulham (1910–1956) in Paris, and began an affair. Through him she met many important figures of the Parisian art world; Balthus, Cocteau, Dali and Picasso. In London she met the young painters Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, John Minton and John Banting. She married the Irish-American writer Constantine Fitzgibbon (1919–1983) in 1944. The marriage lasted fifteen years. In 1960 she married again, to George Edward Morrison (b.1922). In London she became friends with Norman Douglas, Henry Moore, Dylan Thomas and his wife, Caitlin.
Fitzgibbon is a suburb north of the Brisbane central business district in Queensland, Australia. The suburb is one of the smallest suburbs in Brisbane and was named after Abram Fitzgibbon, who was chief engineer of railways in Queensland in the 1860s. The suburb is roughly triangular in shape, and is bounded by the North Coast railway, Cabbage Tree Creek, and Telegraph Road. It is a rather new residential area, having been mostly subdivided in the 1980s and 1990s.
Demographics
In the 2011 census, Fitzgibbon recorded a population of 3,288 people, 53.7% female and 46.3% male.
The median age of the Fitzgibbon population was 35 years of age, 2 years below the Australian median.
62.3% of people living in Fitzgibbon were born in Australia, compared to the national average of 69.8%; the next most common countries of birth were New Zealand 5.5%, India 4.2%, England 3.6%, Philippines 3.4%, China 2.1%.
73.7% of people spoke only English at home; the next most popular languages were 2.8% Cantonese, 1.8% Tagalog, 1.6% Hindi, 1.5% Mandarin, 1.4% Samoan.
Theodora was a young noblewoman of Alexandria who had refused to offer sacrifice to the Roman gods. Standing trial before the prefect Eustratius, she bravely confessed herself a Christian. The prefect asked why she had not married, pointing out that she was of a noble family and beautiful and could have her choice of husbands. She replied that she had dedicated herself to God, and had resolved to remain a virgin for the name of Christ.
Eustratius had her imprisoned, giving her time to reconsider, and he threatened to have her taken to a brothel if she persisted in her disobedience. Three days later, Theodora was brought again to trial, but remained resolute.
Accordingly, Theodora was taken to a brothel. Dissolute youths began to argue which of them should be the first to have her. when the Christian Didymus, dressed in soldier’s garb, entered and chased the profligates out. Didymus exchanged clothes with her, and she escaped. When a man came to despoil the virgin, Didymus revealed himself. Didymus was taken prisoner and brought to the prefect, where he was condemned to death. Saint Ambrose says that Theodora could not allow her savior to die alone and that she joined Didymus before Proculus.
Theodora (Greek: Θεοδώρα; c. 500 – 28 June 548), was empress of the Byzantine Empire and the wife of Emperor Justinian I. She was one of the most influential and powerful of the Byzantine empresses. Some sources mention her as empress regnant with Justinian I as her co-regent. Along with her husband, she is a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, commemorated on November 14.
Historiography
The main historical sources for her life are the works of her contemporary Procopius, scribe for General Belisarius. The historian offered three contradictory portrayals of the Empress. The Wars of Justinian, largely completed in 545, paints a picture of a courageous and influential empress.
Later he wrote the Secret History, which was not published for over a thousand years. The work revealed an author who had become deeply disillusioned with the emperor Justinian, the empress, and even his patron Belisarius. Justinian is depicted as cruel, venal, prodigal and incompetent; as for Theodora, the reader is treated to a detailed and titillating portrayal of vulgarity and insatiable lust, combined with shrewish and calculating mean-spiritedness; Procopius even claims both are demons whose heads were seen to leave their bodies and roam the palace at night. Yet much of the work covers the same time period as The Wars of Justinian.

How Theodora Saved Rome
