North Coast line connection complete – first train
Can you hear it coming? That's the first train travelling over the newly-constructed section of the North Coast rail line—a pivotal milestone for the Cairns Southern Access Corridor Edmonton to Gordonvale (E2G) project!
Earlier this month, the ‘Spirit of Queensland’ made tracks over the first section of the 4.5km rail upgrade project which is making way for the Bruce Highway to be duplicated between Gordonvale and Mackey Creek, Meringa.
With a 1,020m section now completed, the rest of Queensland Rail North Coast line will be upgraded to accommodate the transformation of the Bruce Highway.
The Edmonton to Gordonvale (E2G) project project will deliver long-term improvements to traffic flow and road safety south of Cairns.

Cairns Trains on the North Coast Line | The Cairns Railfan
Hello everyone! Welcome to a new video. A bit of a short one this time but due to it featuring trains I have either barely covered or haven’t covered at all on this channel I decided to not put it in the Mini-Vids series but give it some commentary instead. In this video we will be seeing on the 27th of May at Edmonton, Queensland Rail Diesel Tilt Train ‘5409’ leading the northbound Spirit of Queensland passenger service VC79 Brisbane - Cairns and shortly after, we see a train I have never recorded before, Aurizon 2800 Class ‘2807’ leading southbound intermodal freight service 6798. Next we see on the 28th of May in Bellenden Ker, Queensland Rail Diesel Tilt Train ‘5407’ leading the northbound Spirit of Queensland passenger service VC81 Brisbane - Cairns. Queensland North Coast line trains 🚆 October 2022
I am very happy to present the first of a few videos from my recent trip to Queensland. Queensland has an interesting rail network, with the longest electrified network in the country, from Brisbane to Rockhampton, some 600+ km's. There are some unique and interesting locomotives working around Queensland which was also special to see.
This first video looks at a section of the north coast line, between Gympie north to Miriam Vale. Freights travel up and down this line from Brisbane all the way up to Cairns and the major cities in between, like Mckay and Rockhampton.
The QR Tilt trains run between Rockhampton and Brisbane most days of the week, and I was lucky enough to film some of their services along this section of track.

QUEENSLAND RAIL ELECTRIC TRAIN: Gympie - Brisbane
Queensland Rail (QR) is a railway operator in Queensland, Australia. Owned by the Queensland Government, it operates local and long-distance passenger services, as well as owning and maintaining rolling stock and approximately 6,600 kilometres (4,101 mi) of track and related infrastructure.
One of these lines I am on is the North Coast Line and I board the train in Gympie North Station bound for Brisbane Central Station. Join me on a scenic journey aboard the IMU 105, showcasing breathtaking views of the Australian countryside along the way. The train looked a bit rough around the edges, but this is expected seeing how it was delivered in 1997, and the last of it’s fleet to still retain the original interior.

In today's video we're high on the North Coast Line around Babinda to witness some of the local traffic that runs north of Townsville. Aside from Spirit of Queensland, the staple up here is container traffic for PN and Aurizon. I ended up missing the Aurizon train - I waited 30mins for it to show and ran out of light - only for it to pass me by as I was caught at the lights at Gordonvale.

This is about 2 to 3 hours quicker than the diesel locomotive hauled carriage sets that operated train services between Brisbane and Rockhampton before the electric tilt trains.
The electric tilt trains are configured in permanently coupled 6 carriage units that consists of a single business class carriage with a 1 + 2 seating layout, two economy class and buffet carriages with a 2 + 2 seating layout, three economy class carriages with a 2 + 2 seating layout. These trains are comfortable to travel on. This is one of the best regional daylight long distance train in Australia.
The electric tilt trains were built in 1998 by Walkers Limited in Maryborough Queensland. The trains are based on a design similar to the Japanese Railways Shikoku 8000 series. The electric tilt trains are the fastest trains in Australia at 210kph a record set in 1999 also they are the fastest narrow gauge trains in the world to this day. However in regular service they reach a maximum speed of 160kph. The electric tilt trains run on 1067mm narrow gauge tracks. The tilt mechanism provides upto 5 degrees of tilt through curves thus allowing higher speeds and a smoother ride. The electric tilt trains are powered by 25KV 50Hz overhead catenary wires.
During the electric tilt trains 24 years of service they have undergone two refurbishments once in 2006 and in 2016 thus extending the trains operational life. As of 2023 the electric tilt trains are undergoing their third major refurbishment and as a result a reduced train service is currently operating with only 5 services a week in each direction. Currently Queensland Rail has no plans to replace the electric tilt trains any time soon. So enjoy your travels on them for many years to come.
The footage in this video was produced between 2017 and 2023.

Whether you're a seasoned commuter or a first-time rider, this video offers a comprehensive guide to riding the Queensland Rail Electric Train, including ticket options, schedule information, and more.
