Is Europe on the verge of a new world war? Renowned historian and master chronicler Antony Beevor gives a thorough overview of the most important Dutch battle in WWII in his newest book Arnhem: The Battle of the Bridges. But the book is about much more than a single dramatic battle. It looks into the very heart of an aggressive Europe at war. Beevor will tell about the Battle of Arnhem and will also discuss the current state of Europe with De Balie director and fellow historian Yoeri Albrecht. What lessons can be drawn from the past?
Sir Antony Beevor is one of the best known military historians and experts of WWII. He has published several popular histories, such as Stalingrad, The Battle of Spain, D-Day and The Second World War. The Battle of Arnhem is remembered as a national trauma in The Netherlands. It was one of the greatest demonstrations of paratrooper power ever seen, a heroic battle that lasted nine days and ended in a catastrophic failure and at last became a victory for Adolf Hitler. The cost of failure was horrendous, above all for the Dutch who risked everything to help. German reprisals were cruel and lasted until the end of the war. Antony Beevor, using many overlooked and new sources from Dutch, British, American, Polish and German archives, has reconstructed the terrible reality of this epic battle.
Beevor is also known for his sharp analyses of modern Europe. What does he think about the present developments in Europe? Great Britain is leaving the Union, Free Press and the Rule of Law are under attack in Poland and Hungary, populism is on the rise and the renewed call for a strong leader can be heard all over Europe. At the same time the European Union can hardly handle the crises it faces. Which comparisons can be made with Europe of one century ago?

Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated.

The end of a superpower - The collapse of the Soviet Union | DW Documentary
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the collapse of the Soviet Union as "the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century." This documentary from 2021 shows the path Russian foreign policy has followed under Putin.
[This documentary was originally released in 2021. In February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine.]
On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. Along with it came hope for the end of the Cold War, for independence and freedom for the former Soviet republics. But for many it also brought poverty and war. What remains of the dreams of that time? The documentary includes contemporary witnesses and politicians of the decisive years and shows what has become of the legacy of a world power.

World’ takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War.

The Soviet Union was officially formed in 1922, a country, a political experiment, an ideal, a great scar across history…
Officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, the USSR was a one-party state, governed, controlled, and tormented by a single-party rule. That of the Communist Party. No nation has inflicted such destruction on its own population in the name of progress. Power corroded the leadership, leaving the masses to suffer in the name of history. The very people who were supposed to be governing themselves.
There are many factors that affected the Soviet Union’s turbulent history, but the sheer ungovernable vastnes...

Once upon a time there was a country, a gigantic confederation of states, one of the largest dominion in history.
On December 25, 1991, the Soviet Union collapsed. Along with it came hope for the end of the Cold War, for independence and freedom for the former Soviet republics. But for many it also brought poverty and war. What remains of the dreams of that time? What does freedom look like today, which in large parts still has to be defended and fought for? What role does Russia play in the post-Soviet power structure? We talk to contemporary witnesses and politicians of the decisive years, search for traces of the former multi-ethnic empire in Kyrgy...

Why did the Soviet Union Collapse?
As the Iron Curtain fell, over a dozen nations were finally freed from the heavy-handed grasp of the once-powerful U.S.S.R. From its foundation in 1922 until its final demise in 1991, the Soviet Union and its allies made up an incredibly significant portion of Europe - essentially filling out the entire Eastern side of the continent. A global superpower at its peak, the U.S.S.R. somehow only lasted a short 70 years. How is this possible? And why, exactly, did the Soviet Union collapse?...

Tony Judt - Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945. Probably the go-to work on the Cold War in Europe. Particularly good for the Warsaw Pact. Highly Recommended.
Stephen Lovell - Soviet Union: A Very Short Introduction. A great overview of the entire USSR and its history. Recommended for any beginner to the period.
Geoffrey Hoskings - A History of the Soviet Union. This is an older work (from the 90s) and excludes some of the more recent discoveries since the opening of the Soviet archives. However, it's still the best one-volume work on the USSR available in my opinion.

The Cold War: When nuclear weapons kept the entire world on the edge of M.A.D. – Mutually Assured Destruction. As Russia, China and the USA flex their military muscles on the global stage today, ‘M.A.D. World’ takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War.
In this episode:
- Lead by Poland, Eastern European countries start to follow the Russian model and claim greater freedoms. For the first time in Soviet history, the government does not invade or attempt to crush dissent. Within 12 months almost every eastern European country is holding free elections and breaking loose from soviet oppression.
- A bureaucratic misunderstanding allows East Berliners to move across the border into West Berlin. Within hours the Berlin wall is being demolished to scenes of jubilation.
- One nation from former Eastern Europe has a chilling climax to its break from communism. President Ceaușescu tries to violently suppress the popular uprising but fails. The freedom fighters win and Ceaușescu is executed with his wife on Christmas day 1989.
- East Germany is one of the more severe communist regimes and despite attempts to keep the 2 Germanys separate, they become one nation for the first time since World War 2.
- Gorbachev’s drive to fix the Russian economy is spearheaded by two policies – perestroika, meaning ‘restructuring’ and ‘Glasnost’ meaning ‘openness’. But it may be too late. Many Russians are starving and impatient for a better life.
- Despite Gorbachev’s plan to create a more liberal Soviet Union, the soviet republics want to break free. Protests and violence erupt within many of these new nations as factions fight for power. By 1992, every republic has broken away. The Soviet Union is no more, the great communist experiment is dead and the Cold War is over.

There are many factors that affected the Soviet Union’s turbulent history, but the sheer ungovernable vastness of the country was inescapable. It was a nation the size of a continent stretching from Moscow to Vladivostok and from Leningrad to Stalingrad. What we might consider European Russia was dwarfed by the reaches of Siberia. Enacting any kind of policy took force. Complicated, contradictory figureheads would come and go, men, who held this impossible country it seemed by sheer will. Stalin the despot-hero whose cruelty knew few bounds united a nation to defeat Hitler. Khrushchev the crafty libertarian, who preached reform yet allowed an arms race to escalate. Brezhnev, that unreadable member of the old guard, sent history backward. And of course, Gorbachev, who brought vast change, modernization, and détente, yet saw the Soviet Union collapse under his rule – the untenable nation.
Over many painful years, this vast country locked itself away from the rest of the world, paranoid, economically uncertain, and repressive, while still casting a vast shadow across the world. The 20th century was shaped by its convulsions, its purges, its wars, and its leaders.

We talk to contemporary witnesses and politicians of the decisive years, search for traces of the former multi-ethnic empire in Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Chechnya and Lithuania, and talk to experts about this gigantic historic upheaval.
