The Liberators was a science-fictioncomic book series based on concepts created by Dez Skinn and Will Simpson for the British anthology title Warrior. The series was intended as a far-future continuation of Skinn's proposed shared continuity 'Warrior-verse', established in the Big Ben strip which also ran in Warrior. The Liberators was one of the first mainstream continuing strips scripted by Grant Morrison.
Plot
The scenario is the British capital of London in 2470. A ragtag group of human misfits with strange powers struggle against an occupying force of malevolent, shape-shifting alien beings.
After a disastrous guerilla assault on one of the invaders' living ships, the protagonists are attacked by the unstoppable Wardroid. Meanwhile, in the ruins of the Houses of Parliament, secrets are unearthed that may be the key to understanding the aliens' true motives.
Publication history
The Liberators first featured in Warrior #22, cover dated September 1984. After an initial 5 page installment, Death Run, written by Skinn himself and drawn by John Ridgway, the scripting of the series was handed over to Grant Morrison. Morrison's first 5 page installment, Night Moves, saw publication in Warrior 26, the final issue of the series, cover dated February 1986.
The Liberators by Viktor Suvorov (original Russian title: Освободитель) is a partly autobiographical description of life in the Soviet Army during the 1960s and 1970s. Told through anecdote, it provides insight into the brutality of a military machine where soldiers are treated with no regard whatsoever.
The scenes include the organized sadism of the glasshouse, a massive “military exercise” put on purely to impress foreigners, and an eyewitness description of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. Daily life is dominated by the endless struggle of middle-ranking officers to impress their superiors, a struggle which does nothing whatever for military effectiveness or discipline but depends entirely on cunning and deceit.
The Liberators does not attempt to discuss Soviet doctrine, organization or equipment in any formal way; this is left to another book, Inside the Soviet Army. It does, however, provide an absorbing personal account for non-specialist readership.
The Liberators are a superhuman task force who appear at the climax of the plot arc. They spearhead an invasion of the United States and are from a coalition of nations opposed to the United States' foreign policy. This international collective is made up of China, Syria, North Korea, Iran, and rogue elements of the French and Russian governments. The Liberators and their overseers are an opposing counterpart to the Ultimates and S.H.I.E.L.D., respectively.
Ideology
The members of the Liberators, and the countries supporting them, have varying reasons for attacking the United States, but are all against the U.S.A. in one way or another. Their reasons range from the Colonel's hatred of the United States and his belief that their plans must be curtailed to the Chinese, Russians, French, Arabs, and North Koreans, who desire to stop further preemptive strikes, or Black Widow's belief that the United States has turned her country into a land full of "prostitutes and gangsters". Loki is the singular exception; he joins forces with the Liberators not out of any particular animosity towards the United States, but out of a simple desire to fulfill his role as the Lord of Mischief.
