Millar was born in Coatbridge, Scotland. His parents were also born in Coatbridge; Millar, who spent the first half of his life in the Townhead area of Coatbridge, attended St Ambrose High in Coatbridge and found some great friends there, including Gary McCabe. He has four older brothers, and one older sister, each of whom are 22, 20, 18, 16 and 14 years older than him, respectively. His brother Bobby, who today works at a special needs school, introduced him to comics at age 4 while attending university by taking him to shops and purchasing them for him. Still learning to read, Millar's first comic was the seminal The Amazing Spider-Man #121 (1973), which featured the death of Gwen Stacy. He purchased a Superman comic that day as well. Black and white reprinted comics purchased by his brothers for him would follow, cementing his interest in the medium so much that Millar drew a spider web across his face with indelible marker that his parents were unable to scrub off in time for his First Communion photo a week later. Millar has named Alan Moore and Frank Miller as the two biggest influences on his career, characterizing them as "my Mum and Dad." Other writers he names as influences include Grant Morrison, Peter Milligan, Warren Ellis and Garth Ennis. More recent writers that have impressed him include Jason Aaron and Scott Snyder.
He started his career with Scottish Premier League club Celtic, spending a six-month spell on loan at Újpest in Hungary. He then moved on a free transfer to Scottish First Division club Falkirk. In June 2012 he signed a three-year deal with side Dundee United. He returned to Falkirk on loan for much of the 2013-14 season before being released from his Dundee United contract in May 2014.
He has been capped at both U19 and U21 level for Scotland.
Career
Millar started his career with Celtic. In 2009, Millar moved on a six-month loan to Hungarian Nemzeti Bajnokság I club Újpest.
Millar signed for First Division side Falkirk in June 2010, he signed on a two-year contract and Falkirk said that two SPL clubs were interested in him. On 21 September 2011, he scored a 90th minute freekick in the League Cup to give Falkirk a 3–2 win over Rangers. The 2011–12 season was very successful for Millar as he was one of Falkirk's best players. With his contract expiring at the end of the season he attracted interest from several clubs, including Premier League team Swansea City. On 1 April 2012, he played for Falkirk in their 1–0 win over Hamilton in the 2012 Scottish Challenge Cup Final.
