The Doctor, his granddaughter Susan, and his future wife, River Song, face an unimaginable threat in the climax of Doctor Who – Once and Future, released today from Big Finish Productions.
All anniversary parties must come to an end. Once and Future has been an epic 60th birthday adventure; a rollercoaster ride for the Doctor, his companions, friends and enemies, as he’s lurched from one body to another after being struck by a degeneration gun during the Time War.
But which Doctor was shot with it? Was it the War Doctor (Jonathan Carley)? The Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann)? The Fourth (Tom Baker)? And who was responsible for this diabolical device resulting in our favourite Time Lord shifting through his different incarnations at pace?
Answers will be provided as the Doctor, River (Alex Kingston) and Susan (Carole Ann Ford) visit the Union.
Doctor Who – Once and Future: The Union, written by Matt Fitton, is now available to own as a single-disc collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99), or digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.
The Doctor responds to a distress call from his granddaughter, Susan, taking him to the Diamond Array: a huge multidimensional space station. Once there, his instability increases, as the Fourth and Eighth Doctors discover the Array’s terrible purpose.
Meanwhile, River Song has made a deadly alliance to try to save her husband. And the truth about the Doctor’s degeneration will finally be revealed.
As exclusively revealed in Doctor Who Magazine issue 597, the Union is portrayed by actress Maureen O’Brien, better known to Doctor Who fans as 1960s companion, Vicki (a part she is set to recreate in 2024’s Fugitive of the Daleks).
Of working with her TV predecessor, Maureen O’Brien said: “Carole Ann [Ford] came on my very first day of rehearsal on Doctor Who to wish me well, which I was very touched by. Since those very early days, this is the first time we've ever worked together. We've hardly ever met –just in passing – but to actually work together is extraordinary, and very nice.”
Carole Ann Ford added: “That's the thing about Doctor Who, you just never really say goodbye to anyone because you always seem to bump into each other again and it's always a great pleasure. It's a wonderful thing, this series – it brings people together.”
Producer David Richardson said: “After six different stories, and six different Doctors, we enter the endgame… Matt Fitton’s mind has been working on overdrive to deliver this huge finale with its reveals and secrets and beautiful moments aplenty. You might need a lie down after listening to the last half of it!
“And with so much story to tell, it is a bumper episode that runs at a whopping 73 minutes. A massive audio movie for Doctor Who’s massive 60th anniversary!”
Writer Matt Fitton added: “Finally, it's time for the truth – the who, how, where and what of the Doctor's degeneration!
“Facing an enemy who knows him well and wants a certain kind of revenge, the Doctor's state of mind is deteriorating. He'll need the help of friends – and family – to survive. After a rollercoaster ride through past and future, this anniversary adventure dives into what it really means to be the Doctor.”
An epilogue to the Doctor Who – Once and Future series, entitled The Final Act, will be released in November 2024.
Big Finish listeners can purchase all eight Once and Future audio adventures together in a standard edition series bundle for just £72 (on collector’s edition CD and download) or £60 (download only).
The special edition series bundle, which contains extended behind-the-scenes extras and music suites for each story, is also available to purchase for just £62 (as a digital download only).

The Fifth Doctor is about to encounter his daughter and another very familiar face in the latest full-cast audio adventure of the Doctor Who 60th anniversary audio series, Once and Future.
Released today from Big Finish Productions, Doctor Who – Once and Future: The Artist at the End of Time continues the celebratory anniversary series which began in May.
The Doctor is in trouble, slipping through his different incarnations, after being caught up in the aftermath of a weapon in the Time War.
In this story, the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) takes centre stage and is joined by a couple of well-known faces in the form of Jenny (Georgia Tennant) – the cloned daughter of his tenth incarnation, and the Curator (Colin Baker) – who bears an uncanny resemblance to an older Sixth Doctor.
Doctor Who – Once and Future: The Artist at the End of Time, written by James Goss, is now availableas a single-disc collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99), or digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively from the Big Finish website.
Suffering the effects of degeneration, the Doctor heads towards the end of the universe in search of answers. Instead, he finds his daughter – Jenny – and an Artist whose works appear to mark the end of every world they touch.
The Doctor stabilises into his Fifth form to join forces with Jenny and the Curator to solve the mystery of the Final Gallery and the art it has collected.
Georgia Tennant said: “I have been bringing Jenny back through Big Finish for quite a while now and each time I do I can honestly say it’s the best part of my working year. To be able to collaborate with writers, directors, producers and actors on a show from the start is such a privilege and not something that happens very often.”
“I’m so honoured to have managed to carve out a little section of the Whoniverse with Jenny, I’m really glad the fans have allowed me and her to do that. Long may Doctor Who continue.”
Doctor Who fans worldwide can pre-order a bundle of all eight Once and Future audio adventures for just £72 (on collector’s edition CD and download) or £60 (download only).

Sylvester McCoy stars as the Seventh Doctor in a battle of wits with his greatest enemy, in a full-cast Doctor Who audio drama released today.
Davros (Terry Molloy), the General (Ken Bones) and Veklin (Beth Chalmers) are just some of the familiar faces encountered as the Doctor tries to find out more about the mysterious weapon which injured him during the Time War.

He will help them win the Time War… but only if the Doctor comes to his rescue.
Writer Jonathan Morris said: “I was thrilled to be asked to write for the 60th anniversary audio series. Working on other Big Finish things, I’d occasionally caught a tantalising glimpse of a page of script or overheard actors in the studio recording a scene which I didn’t know about. And I was all, ‘Oh, that sounds terribly exciting, I wish they’d ask me to do something’. And then, out of the blue, they did!
“I had two main thoughts, though, which you could consider part of my ‘brief to self’. It needed to deal with a significant part of the series mythology – it couldn’t be ‘just another Doctor Who story’. And rather than being written in the style of the Seventh Doctor’s era it had to be a contemporary piece because it’s not only a celebration of the past, it’s a celebration of the fact that it’s still going.”
Actor Sylvester McCoy added: “Doctor Who was only supposed to last for six weeks and it's now sixty years! It's astonishing.
“I'm sure the other Doctors and companions will tell you, when they meet people throughout the world, many of them say 'Doctor Who inspired me to become a doctor', 'Doctor Who inspired me to become a scientist', or 'Doctor Who inspired me and helped me to get through life'. It's extraordinary. What a blessing to be in such a wonderful programme.”
Big Finish listeners can pre-order the bundle of all eight Once and Future audio adventures for just £72 (on collector’s edition CD and download) or £60 (download only).
A special edition series bundle, which contains extended behind-the-scenes extras and music suites for each story, is also available to pre-order for just £62 (download only).
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.

Big Finish Productions’ anniversary audio epic, Doctor Who – Once and Future nears its endgame in Time Lord Immemorial, released today.
“I would’ve run through a brick wall for David Warner. I loved him. An inspirational man and actor.” – Christopher Eccleston
Two Doctors meet in the latest episode of the diamond anniversary audio drama series, as Christopher Eccleston (the Ninth Doctor) and the late David Warner (the Unbound Doctor) star in Doctor Who – Once and Future: Time Lord Immemorial.
Suffering from the effects of a degeneration weapon and slipping between bodies, the Ninth Doctor finds his TARDIS caught between universes as the cosmos starts to break down. A Doctor from another reality arrives and they join forces with Liv Chenka and the Lumiat to find the cause.
Someone has desecrated the mythical Hall of the Time Lord Immemorial, where the sands of time from the multiverse are held. And those sands are running out…
Doctor Who – Once and Future: Time Lord Immemorial is now available as a single-disc collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99), or digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively from www.bigfinish.com.
Christopher Eccleston said: “It was quite emotional for me to work with David Warner, an actor I grew up as a child watching and admiring. To share the Doctor with him was special. If ever there was an actor who should have played the Doctor, it was David Warner.”
Producer David Richardson added: “Bringing the Ninth Doctor and the Unbound Doctor together was inspired by the friendship between Chris and David. They have known each other well for some years and it was a treat to bring them together in the studio. To benefit from these two greats acting opposite each other was irresistible.”
Writer Lisa McMullin said: “This particular set was a real gift because I got to make two characters that you might not expect to be able to interact because they’re in different universes, and then converge those universes and have them collide. There’s a whole heap of fun where they’re trying to decide which universe they’re in. The Ninth and Unbound Doctors were so much fun and a joy. They worked together really well, and bounced beautifully off each other.”
Script editor Matt Fitton said: “I know Christopher Eccleston loves Lisa McMullin’s writing, so when he said that he wanted to do one of these 60th anniversary adventures, we immediately got her on the job, and threw together some more old friends as well.
“We have Nicola Walker turning up as Liv Chenka, and Gina McKee as the Lumiat. The Lumiat is Lisa’s creation who is, in a way, the Master’s version of the Valeyard in that she’s the opposite of everything the Master stands for. The Lumiat is an insufferably good version of the Master or Missy!”
The impressive roster of guest actors in this adventure is completed by Robert Powell (Jesus of Nazareth, The Thirty-Nine Steps) as the Time Lord Immemorial himself.
Big Finish listeners can purchase all eight Once and Future audio adventures together in a bundle for just £72 (on collector’s edition CD and download) or £60 (download only).
A special edition series bundle, which contains extended behind-the-scenes extras and music suites for each story, is also available to pre-order for just £62 (as a digital download only).

The Doctor Who audio event of the diamond anniversary year starts today with the release of Once and Future: Past Lives, starring Tom Baker and featuring a galaxy of guest stars.
The Time War. The Doctor has been injured and brought to a Time Lord field hospital. His body glows with energy, but this is no regeneration into a future form – instead, the Doctor’s past faces begin to appear as he flits haphazardly between incarnations...
Staggering to his TARDIS, the Doctor sets out to solve the mystery of his ‘degeneration’. Who has done this to him? How? And why? From the Earth to the stars, across an array of familiar times and places, he follows clues to retrace his steps, encountering old friends and enemies along the way. Tumbling through his lives, the Doctor must stop his degeneration before he loses himself completely...
Doctor Who – Once and Future: Past Lives, by Robert Valentine, is now available as a single-disc collector’s edition CD (+ download for just £10.99), or digital download only (for just £8.99), exclusively from the Big Finish website.
This full-cast audio adventure is the first of an epic eight-part series. Doctor Who fans worldwide can pre-order all eight Once and Future stories for just £72 (on collector’s edition CD and download) or £60 (download only).
A special edition series bundle, which contains extended behind-the-scenes extras and music suites for each story, is also available to purchase for just £62 (as a digital download only).
Writer Robert Valentine said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be kicking off the 60th anniversary celebration for Big Finish. And in the wider context of this being Doctor Who’s diamond jubilee, the party begins here!
“We find the Doctor in the most chaotic situation imaginable. He’s been blasted by some sort of degeneration weapon. Meanwhile, the Meddling Monk has a price on his head, Sarah Jane Smith gets kidnapped, and Kate Stewart and Osgood are being menaced by a belligerent alien race with plans to relive their glory days.
“In this adventure you’ll get to revisit one or two familiar locations from the Doctor’s past and a lot of old faces.”
Script Editor Matt Fitton added: “This is a full-on celebration of 60 years of Doctor Who, throwing together friends, companions, enemies, different Doctors and paying tribute to some degree to every single era of the show.
“It’s lovely to make these connections, and of course we have classic UNIT represented in Sarah Jane tying in with modern UNIT. That’s always fun to do!
“We’re only at the beginning of the adventure so we’re just starting to figure out what’s going on. There are many more secrets and mysteries to be uncovered...”
Doctor Who – Once and Future: Past Lives stars Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor (with special appearances by Stephen Noonan, Michael Troughton, Tim Treloar, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy as the Doctor’s other incarnations), Sadie Miller as Sarah Jane Smith, Rufus Hound as the Meddling Monk, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Ingrid Oliver as Petronella Osgood.
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
