Time travel is a common theme in fiction and has been depicted in a variety of media, such as literature, television and advertisements.
History
H. G. Wells' 1895 story The Time Machine popularized the concept of time travel and introduced the concept of travelling through time by mechanical means.
Prototypes of time travel stories include:
the ancient Hindufolk tale of the King Revaita, who travels to a different world to meet the creator Brahma and is shocked to learn that many ages have passed when he returns to Earth;
the 8th century Japanese folk taleUrashima Tarō, which features a fisherman who visits a world under the sea and stays there for three days, only to find after returning to his village that three hundred years have passed and his family is long dead;
Washington Irving's 1819 story Rip Van Winkle, which tells of a man who goes to sleep on a mountain for a night and wakes up 20 years in the future: he has been completely forgotten, his wife is dead and his daughter is grown up;
In the television series Married... with Children episode "Assault and Batteries", Al Bundy tries to watch his favorite film Hondo, which only appears on television every 17 years. He misses it and the TV announcer announces that the next airing of Hondo will be February 18, 2011.
The 2008 Enya song "My! My! Time Flies!" concludes with the lyrics, "Could be we step out again/Could be tomorrow but then/Could be two thousand and ten."
The events depicted in Michael Crichton's science fiction novel Jurassic Park are set in August 1989.
The events of the arcade version of Final Fight occurs in 1989 according to the original Japanese version. The English localization changes the setting to an unspecified year in the 1990s.
Time travel is the concept of movement (often by a human) between different points in time in a manner analogous to moving between different points in space, typically using a hypothetical device known as a time machine. Time travel is a recognized concept in philosophy and fiction, but travel to an arbitrary point in time has a very limited support in theoretical physics, usually only in conjunction with quantum mechanics or Einstein–Rosen bridges. Sometimes the above narrow meaning of time travel is used, sometimes a broader meaning. For example, travel into the future (not the past) via time dilation is a well-proven phenomenon in physics (relativity) and is routinely experienced by astronauts, but only by several milliseconds, as they can verify by checking a precise watch against a clock that remained on Earth. Time dilation by years into the future could be done by taking a round trip during which motion occurs at speeds comparable to the speed of light, but this is not currently technologically feasible for vehicles.
The series began its first run with ninety-five episodes on 3 September 2003, on France's France 3, and ended its run on 10 November 2007. It aired in the United States on 19 April 2004, for the first time on Cartoon Network. The show later spawned a new and improved live-action/CGI series Code Lyoko: Evolution, which began at the end of 2012. It kept the 3D computer animation style while it focused on Lyoko, the digital sea and the Cortex, while live-action for the real world.
Between 2004 and 2007, Code Lyoko aired every day on Cartoon Network (Miguzi) at 4 PM Eastern Standard Time, sometimes showing two episodes consecutively, in the cases of season finales.
