Absolute (philosophy)
In religious philosophy, the Absolute is the concept of (a form of) Being which transcends limited, conditional, everyday existence. The manifestation of the Absolute has been described as the Logos, Word, the Ṛta or Ratio (Latin for "reason").
Related concepts are the Source, Fountain or Well, the Centre, the Monad or One, the All or Whole, the Origin (Arche) or Principle or Primordial Cause, the Sacred or Holy or Utterly Other (Otto), the Form of the Good (Plato), the Mystery, Nirvana, the Ultimate, the Ground or Urground ("Original Ground").
It is sometimes used as an alternate term for the more commonly used God of the Universe, the Divine or the Supreme Being ("Utmost Being"), especially, but by no means exclusively, to express it in less personal and more impersonal representations. The concept of the Absolute may or may not (depending on one's specific doctrine) possess discrete will, intelligence, awareness, or a personal nature. It is sometimes conceived of as the source through which all being emanates. It contrasts with finite things, considered individually, and known collectively as the relative. This is reflected in the name's Latin etymology absolūtus which means "loosened from" or "unattached" (from a subject-object dualism).

The Absolute (Ace Augustine album)
The Absolute is the first studio album from Ace Augustine. Strike First Records released the album on January 18, 2011. Ace Augustine worked with Alex Koppenheffer, in the production of this album.
Critical reception
Awarding the album three and a half stars for Jesus Freak Hideout, Wayne Reimer states, "The Absolute is by no means flawless, but it's honest and shows real potential." Michael Weaver, rating the album two and a half stars at Jesus Freak Hideout, says, "the release seems to feature a band suffering from an identity crisis." Giving the album five stars from HM Magazine, Matthew Leonard writes, "Each song is unique in its sound with phenomenal technical guitar work, raspy mid-high range vocals, harmonized singing, and drumming that's so fast you gotta wonder if it's a drum machine." Peter John Willoughby, rating the album a six out of ten for Cross Rhythms, says, "Whilst they haven't developed their own distinctive sound, it doesn't detract from their raw energy." Awarding the album three stars from Indie Vision Music, Joshua Clark states, "a pretty solid debut album." Dylan Powell, giving the album a six out of ten at Mind Equals Blown, writes, "The Absolute isn't a bad record." Keith Anderson, giving the album four stars by The New Review, writes, "They bring a ton of technical magic to the album, but their sound is fresh enough my ear canals swallow them like a black hole consumes planets."

Westminster (/ˈwɛsᵗmɪnstər/) is an area of central London within the City of Westminster on the north bank of the River Thames. Westminster's concentration of visitor attractions and historic landmarks, one of the highest in London, includes the Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and Westminster Cathedral.
Historically the area lay within St Margaret's parish, City & Liberty of Westminster, Middlesex.
The name Westminster originated from the informal description of the abbey church and royal peculiar of St Peter's (Westminster Abbey), literally West of the City of London, indeed until the Reformation there was a reference to the 'East Minster' at Minories (Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate) east of the City; the abbey was part of the royal palace that had been created here by Edward the Confessor. It has been the home of the permanent institutions of England's government continuously since about 1200 (High Middle Ages' Plantagenet times) and is now the seat of British government.

Westminster is a printing and display typeface inspired by the machine-readable numbers printed on cheques. It was created in the 1960s and is named after the then Westminster Bank Limited (now NatWest), the United Kingdom bank that helped fund its production.
Since its design, the typeface has been strongly associated with computers—especially in the late 1960s and early-to-mid-1970s. It is used frequently to indicate computer involvement in television series, films, books, and comics.

F. H. Bradley’s Absolute Idealism was in sharp contrast to that of McTaggart’s. Indeed, their conception of metaphysics was staunchly different. Those who argue for absolute truth say that some beliefs are true regardless of place, time, or perspective, while those who argue for relative truth say human truth is never absolute, but varies by perspective and degree.
Hegel saw Aristotle and Heraclitus of ancient Greece as the first philosophers to embody these two sides in the history of human thought. Unfortunately, Hegel was rather Eurocentric, and gave Egyptian and Indian thought little consideration, and Chinese thought none at all, though he could have found this dynamic in these places and others. Examining these two sides of human thought tells us much about the human mind, as well as the positions we each take in our everyday thinking.
Aristotle argued that genuine knowledge, unlike mere opinion, must be eternal and universal, true in all times and places. For Aristotle, if something is genuinely true, it is exclusively true and cannot be false at all, just as if something is genuinely good, it is exclusively good and cannot be bad at all. Aristotle argues that it is the job of the philosopher to distinguish the true from the false and the good from the bad using reason, and that without absolute truth, nothing can be said with certainty.
Heraclitus, a far more skeptical thinker than Aristotle, argued that human understandings are always relative and limited, and wisdom shows us that we can always improve our perspective. Heraclitus argues that experts who acquire knowledge often become proud and ignorant, believing their perspective to be absolute, forgetting that they only see part of the picture. While we want certainty, this can limit our perspective such that we do not open up to perspectives outside and opposed to our own. What is true in one perspective may be false in another, just as what is good for someone may be bad for someone else. Heraclitus argues that it is the goal of the wise to encompass all perspectives as much as possible, rather than be certain that one is on the single and simple side of truth.
One of the questions I am often asked by students is, "Can't we take both sides?". The truth is that we find ourselves on both sides everyday. Sometimes we want to defend beliefs, traditions and authorities, explaining away counterexamples, and other times we want to doubt and question them, drawing attention to counterexamples. Learning and questioning the positions of thinkers on both sides strengthens the mind we use to take these positions ourselves.
Today, the same positions found in Aristotle, Heraclitus and throughout the ancient world define the central debate in Philosophy of Science. Positivists argue that scientific fact is exclusively objective and confirmed, while Pragmatists argue that scientific theories and models are useful descriptions and tools, but not complete explanations that are final or unimprovable.
We have acquired so much knowledge and technology throughout human history, and yet it still remains valuable to take one side or the other of this endless debate depending on whether we want things to be questioned or unquestioned, whether we want things to change or remain the same. When we want certainty, relativity makes us insecure, but when we want change, certainty makes us claustrophobic. Exercising both sides of our minds gives us the ability to consciously take better positions, make better arguments, and be better human beings.

The work is divided into two books; the first being “Appearance,” and the second being “Reality.” In “Appearance,” Bradley arms himself with a single weapon—the Law of Non-Contradiction—and proceeds to lead the reader through a pilgrim’s progress of argumentation; wherein he exposes contradictions, inconsistencies, and paradoxes embedded deep in the heart of our everyday experiences that we take prima facie to be unquestionably and absolutely real.
Among the condemned include the distinction between primary and secondary qualities, relations, space, time, motion, change, causality, activity, individual things, the self, the body, physical nature, and many other phenomena that get caught in his snare. Bradley even goes so far as to say that “philosophy, as we shall find in our next chapter, is itself but appearance.” For Bradley, these phenomena are all “appearances” that fail to live up to the status of “Ultimate Reality.”
After entering into the second book of Appearance and Reality (i.e. “Reality”), Bradley exchanges his heavily-used battering-ram for an eidetic canvas and paintbrush, and proceeds to draft a portrait of reality. Bradley calls his “Ultimate Reality,” the “Absolute.” In like contrast to McTaggart’s “society of eternal selves,” Bradley’s Absolute is a harmonious, supra-relational whole whose contents is nothing other than sentient experience. Bradley’s arguments for monism stem from his rejection of the reality of relations. In fact, Bradley’s legacy has largely been shaped by his notorious and eponymously named “Bradley’s Regress.”
In the most dramatic passage of Appearance and Reality, Bradley calls upon the reader to perform the following ideal experiment:
“Find any piece of existence, take up anything that anyone could possibly call a fact, or could in any sense assert to have being, and then judge if it does not consist in sentient experience. Try to discover any sense in which you can still continue to speak of it, when all perception and feeling have been removed; or point out any fragment of its matter, any aspect of its being, which is not derived from and is not still relative to this source. F. H. Bradley’s Absolute Idealism was in sharp contrast to that of McTaggart’s. Indeed, their conception of metaphysics was staunchly different. McTaggart saw metaphysics as a means of comfort, while Bradley sarcastically took metaphysics to be “the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct, but to find these reasons is no less an instinct.” In a more serious tone, he also expounds upon this in the following way:
Bradley’s writings include Ethical Studies, The Principles of Logic, and Essays on Truth and Reality, but perhaps his most important contribution to British Idealism was his 1893 magnum opus, Appearance and Reality. The work is divided into two books; the first being “Appearance,” and the second being “Reality.” In “Appearance,” Bradley arms himself with a single weapon—the Law of Non-Contradiction—and proceeds to lead the reader through a pilgrim’s progress of argumentation; wherein he exposes contradictions, inconsistencies, and paradoxes embedded deep in the heart of our everyday experiences that we take prima facie to be unquestionably and absolutely real.
Among the condemned include the distinction between primary and secondary qualities, relations, space, time, motion, change, causality, activity, individual things, the self, the body, physical nature, and many other phenomena that get caught in his snare. Bradley even goes so far as to say that “philosophy, as we shall find in our next chapter, is itself but appearance.” For Bradley, these phenomena are all “appearances” that fail to live up to the status of “Ultimate Reality.”
After entering into the second book of Appearance and Reality (i.e. “Reality”), Bradley exchanges his heavily-used battering-ram for an eidetic canvas and paintbrush, and proceeds to draft a portrait of reality. Bradley calls his “Ultimate Reality,” the “Absolute.” In like contrast to McTaggart’s “society of eternal selves,” Bradley’s Absolute is a harmonious, supra-relational whole whose contents is nothing other than sentient experience. Bradley’s arguments for monism stem from his rejection of the reality of relations. In fact, Bradley’s legacy has largely been shaped by his notorious and eponymously named “Bradley’s Regress.”
In the most dramatic passage of Appearance and Reality, Bradley calls upon the reader to perform the following ideal experiment:
“Find any piece of existence, take up anything that anyone could possibly call a fact, or could in any sense assert to have being, and then judge if it does not consist in sentient experience. Hegel, one of the more influential modern European Philosophers, saw the history of human thought as a battle between dogmatism and skepticism, between absolute "black and white" and relative "shades of grey" understandings of truth. Those who argue for absolute truth say that some beliefs are true regardless of place, time, or perspective, while those who argue for relative truth say human truth is never absolute, but varies by perspective and degree.
Hegel saw Aristotle and Heraclitus of ancient Greece as the first philosophers to embody these two sides in the history of human thought. Unfortunately, Hegel was rather Eurocentric, and gave Egyptian and Indian thought little consideration, and Chinese thought none at all, though he could have found this dynamic in these places and others. Examining these two sides of human thought tells us much about the human mind, as well as the positions we each take in our everyday thinking.
Aristotle argued that genuine knowledge, unlike mere opinion, must be eternal and universal, true in all times and places. For Aristotle, if something is genuinely true, it is exclusively true and cannot be false at all, just as if something is genuinely good, it is exclusively good and cannot be bad at all. Aristotle argues that it is the job of the philosopher to distinguish the true from the false and the good from the bad using reason, and that without absolute truth, nothing can be said with certainty.
Heraclitus, a far more skeptical thinker than Aristotle, argued that human understandings are always relative and limited, and wisdom shows us that we can always improve our perspective. Heraclitus argues that experts who acquire knowledge often become proud and ignorant, believing their perspective to be absolute, forgetting that they only see part of the picture. While we want certainty, this can limit our perspective such that we do not open up to perspectives outside and opposed to our own. What is true in one perspective may be false in another, just as what is good for someone may be bad for someone else. Heraclitus argues that it is the goal of the wise to encompass all perspectives as much as possible, rather than be certain that one is on the single and simple side of truth.
One of the questions I am often asked by students is, "Can't we take both sides?". The truth is that we find ourselves on both sides everyday. Sometimes we want to defend beliefs, traditions and authorities, explaining away counterexamples, and other times we want to doubt and question them, drawing attention to counterexamples. Learning and questioning the positions of thinkers on both sides strengthens the mind we use to take these positions ourselves.
Today, the same positions found in Aristotle, Heraclitus and throughout the ancient world define the central debate in Philosophy of Science. Positivists argue that scientific fact is exclusively objective and confirmed, while Pragmatists argue that scientific theories and models are useful descriptions and tools, but not complete explanations that are final or unimprovable.
We have acquired so much knowledge and technology throughout human history, and yet it still remains valuable to take one side or the other of this endless debate depending on whether we want things to be questioned or unquestioned, whether we want things to change or remain the same. When we want certainty, relativity makes us insecure, but when we want change, certainty makes us claustrophobic. Exercising both sides of our minds gives us the ability to consciously take better positions, make better arguments, and be better human beings.

F. H. Bradley’s Absolute Idealism was in sharp contrast to that of McTaggart’s. Indeed, their conception of metaphysics was staunchly different. McTaggart saw metaphysics as a means of comfort, while Bradley sarcastically took metaphysics to be “the finding of bad reasons for what we believe upon instinct, but to find these reasons is no less an instinct.” In a more serious tone, he also expounds upon this in the following way:
Bradley’s writings include Ethical Studies, The Principles of Logic, and Essays on Truth and Reality, but perhaps his most important contribution to British Idealism was his 1893 magnum opus, Appearance and Reality. The work is divided into two books; the first being “Appearance,” and the second being “Reality.” In “Appearance,” Bradley arms himself with a single weapon—the Law of Non-Contradiction—and proceeds to lead the reader through a pilgrim’s progress of argumentation; wherein he exposes contradictions, inconsistencies, and paradoxes embedded deep in the heart of our everyday experiences that we take prima facie to be unquestionably and absolutely real.
Among the condemned include the distinction between primary and secondary qualities, relations, space, time, motion, change, causality, activity, individual things, the self, the body, physical nature, and many other phenomena that get caught in his snare. Bradley even goes so far as to say that “philosophy, as we shall find in our next chapter, is itself but appearance.” For Bradley, these phenomena are all “appearances” that fail to live up to the status of “Ultimate Reality.”
After entering into the second book of Appearance and Reality (i.e. “Reality”), Bradley exchanges his heavily-used battering-ram for an eidetic canvas and paintbrush, and proceeds to draft a portrait of reality. Bradley calls his “Ultimate Reality,” the “Absolute.” In like contrast to McTaggart’s “society of eternal selves,” Bradley’s Absolute is a harmonious, supra-relational whole whose contents is nothing other than sentient experience. Bradley’s arguments for monism stem from his rejection of the reality of relations. In fact, Bradley’s legacy has largely been shaped by his notorious and eponymously named “Bradley’s Regress.”
In the most dramatic passage of Appearance and Reality, Bradley calls upon the reader to perform the following ideal experiment:
“Find any piece of existence, take up anything that anyone could possibly call a fact, or could in any sense assert to have being, and then judge if it does not consist in sentient experience. Try to discover any sense in which you can still continue to speak of it, when all perception and feeling have been removed; or point out any fragment of its matter, any aspect of its being, which is not derived from and is not still relative to this source. When the experiment is made strictly, I can myself conceive of nothing else than the experienced. Anything, in no sense felt or perceived, becomes to me quite unmeaning. And as I cannot try to think of it without realising either that I am not thinking at all, or that I am thinking of it against my will as being experienced, I am driven to the conclusion that for me experience is the same as reality. The fact that falls elsewhere seems, in my mind, to be a mere word and a failure, or else an attempt at self-contradiction. It is a vicious abstraction whose existence is meaningless nonsense, and is therefore not possible.”
The radical conclusions of Bradley’s arguments for monism and a single “Absolute” that transcends, absorbs, and harmonizes all the finite and contradictory appearances of our universe, “with all its suns and galaxies,” earned him the title of “the Zeno of modern philosophy.” Bradley’s trenchant prose, humorous whit, and frequent polemics against empiricism, materialism, reductionism, and abstractionism blend together into an iconic and unique flavor of thought.
