Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, is a large, mainly Gothic abbey church in the City of Westminster, London, located just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is one of the most notable religious buildings in the United Kingdom and has been the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English and, later, British monarchs. Between 1540 and 1556 the abbey had the status of a cathedral. Since 1560, however, the building is no longer an abbey nor a cathedral, having instead the status of a Church of England "Royal Peculiar"—a church responsible directly to the sovereign. The building itself is the original abbey church.
According to a tradition first reported by Sulcard in about 1080, a church was founded at the site (then known as Thorn Ey (Thorn Island)) in the 7th century, at the time of Mellitus, a Bishop of London. Construction of the present church began in 1245, on the orders of King Henry III.
Since 1066, when Harold Godwinson and William the Conqueror were crowned, the coronations of English and British monarchs have been held there. There have been at least 16 royal weddings at the abbey since 1100. Two were of reigning monarchs (Henry I and Richard II), although, before 1919, there had been none for some 500 years.
The abbey's official name is the Abbey of Saint Joseph of Westminster; Saint Joseph is the abbey's patron saint. The abbey was designed by the firm of Gardiner, Thornton, Gathe and Associates.
History
The seminary was founded in 1931 by Archbishop William Mark Duke of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Five monks, including Father Eugene Medved, later Prior and Abbot, were sent from Mount Angel Abbey, Oregon, to British Columbia in 1939 to found a priory and to take over the running of the Seminary of Christ the King, which was then located in Ladner, B.C..
The following year, the monks moved their new priory together with the seminary to Burnaby, near Vancouver, B.C., neighbouring New Westminster. It became a conventual (independent) priory in 1948. In 1953 the Holy See raised it to the status of an Abbey. Prior Eugene was elected as the first Abbot of the new abbey.
Since its design, the typeface has been strongly associated with computers—especially in the late 1960s and early-to-mid-1970s. It is used frequently to indicate computer involvement in television series, films, books, and comics.
Westminster Abbey is the burial place for over 3,000 people as well as being an active church. The Abbey is home to hundreds of years of history.
There is also an onsite museum, restaurant, gardens and more.

Exploring The Incredible Royal Tombs Of Westminster Abbey
In this video, historian Dan Snow joins Sir David Cannadine to explore the complex history of religious affiliation at Westminster Abbey, which has evolved from being a Catholic monastery to a Protestant cathedral, with monarchs buried at the site representing a range of beliefs. He also discusses the various tombs, statues, monuments, and effigies in the abbey, highlighting how the process of memorialization has changed over time, with physical burials now rare and reserved for the most notable figures. Cannadine also takes viewers on a tour of the tombs, noting the juxtaposition of Winston Churchill's tomb and the Unknown Warrior's monument, and discussing how modes of commemoration and celebration continue to evolve in the 21st century.
This episode was filmed before the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

We visited Westminster Abbey in London and was a little hesitant to visit at first because we read so many reviews online that said it would be very crowded with long lines. To our surprise, we were able to get inside within 15 minutes on a late Friday afternoon. We're so glad we were able to visit this magnificent abbey full of royal history and more.

Where are British kings buried? Well in truth you would be hard-pushed to know - most of the sovereigns from James I to George II are buried in Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey, but not one of them has a proper monument. If you look carefully you will find their names inscribed on the floor above the burial vaults where they are interred, but those names were only added in the 1860s before that time their graves were unmarked. In this video, using contemporary visual evidence, I explore the two primary vaults in Henry VII's chapel, what they look like, the coffins within and who is buried within.
