Why simply being Taiwanese could lead to war | DW News
Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged that “reunification” with Taiwan is “inevitable.” Many residents of the island would prefer to maintain Taiwan’s awkward status quo: able to act independently, elect their own government and enjoy their pluralistic democracy—even if most countries do not recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state. Many in Taipei point to how Beijing has imposed a harsh national security law in Hong Kong—despite pledges of allowing the former British colony to maintain autonomy under the model of “one country, two systems.” Many also remember how Taiwanese identity was repressed under Nationalist-rule on the island. Democracy and civil rights are now central to Taiwanese identity. But for Beijing promoting “separatism” is a crime. Even speeches from Taiwanese President L...

Why China and the US are so obsessed with Taiwan | Mapped Out

A standoff seems almost unavoidable. But what factors give the tiny island such an outsize importance for both superpowers? And why is neither side backing down?
We speak to foreign policy experts Victor Gao (Center for China and Globalization) and David Sacks (Council on Foreign Relations) and find out what people in Taiwan think of the tensions.

Hey, I’m Sonny! I’m from the US but I’ve been living in Asia for 10 years and started making food and travel videos to document my experiences. I travel to different parts of the world, hunting down and documenting the most unique food each country has to offer.
If you see any factual food errors in my videos, please feel free to politely let me know in the comments. I'm a huge fan of trying different, interesting foods in each country. My show is from a Western point of view, but more importantly, MY point of view. It is not meant to offend any person or culture.

The US-China superpower rivalry is on full display in Taiwan. Beijing wants control of the island and is willing to use force to get it. Washington has been ambiguous about how it would respond but is expanding its military presence in the region. Taiwan is at the center of the US first island chain strategy to contain China.

In Taiwan, a variety of languages are spoken, reflecting the island's rich cultural and ethnic diversity. The primary language is Mandarin Chinese, which is the official language and widely used in education, media, and government.
Besides Mandarin, several other languages are commonly spoken:
Taiwanese Hokkien (Min Nan): This is the native language of the majority of the Taiwanese population, especially among older generations and in southern Taiwan.
Hakka: Spoken by the Hakka minority, it has several dialects and is mostly used in Hakka communities in the northern and central parts of Taiwan.
Formosan languages: These are the languages of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan, comprising at least 16 languages belonging to the Austronesian language family. However, many of these languages are endangered.
Mandarin: While Mandarin is the official language, the Taiwanese variant incorporates some phonetic and lexical differences from the Mandarin spoken in mainland China.
English: Widely taught in schools as a second language and increasingly used in business, academia, and tourism, though the proficiency level can vary widely among the population.
These languages coexist, showcasing the island's multicultural identity. The government also promotes multilingualism, including efforts to preserve the indigenous languages and dialects.

What's the difference between Taiwanese Hokkien vs Singaporean Hokkien? In today's video, Angel invited Glen (a Singaporean) to converse in Hokkien together! But Angel's Hokkien is not good though.
There is really quite a bit of the differences between Taiwanese Hokkien and Singaporean Hokkien! I wonder if it's because both Angel and Glen are just no good at Hokkien or is it because there is really such a big difference in Taiwanese Hokkien and Singaporean Hokkien!

Do you ever heared how Taiwanese language sounds like?
Personally I think it sounds very different from mandarin Chinese.
In Taiwan we have many dialects, I can speak both Taiwanese and mandarin Chinese, some people can speak Hakka and many other languages since we also have aboriginals.
Nowadays many Taiwanese young people can't speak Taiwanese, I think it is quit sad because this is actually a beautiful language.

Please note that in this video, the characters are in mandarin Chinese, only my pronunciation is in Taiwanese.
Hello guys! Today's video is very different!
I am not teaching mandarin Chinese but Taiwanese!
For learning Taiwanese, there is a spelling system which is different from Hanyu pinyin and Zhuyin, you can actually find more information in following websites about Taiwanese:
https://itaigi.tw/k/%E4%BD%A0%E5%A5%BD/
Taiwanese dictionary:
https://twblg.dict.edu.tw/holodict_new/default.jsp
There are 2 different views of people are battling about if Taiwanese has characters or not.
In today's lesson I am not going that deep, I will only write the Chinese characters (since I mainly teach mandarin Chinese in this channel) and English meaning, for pronunciation, trust yourself and just copy me! Enjoy!

If you had enough of watching tones of YouTube tutorials, spend so much time on searching materials, watching Chinese drama to learn Chinese, but you found out that you still CANNOT have a conversation with people, guess where is your problem?
The problem is that you are just learning RANDOM vocabulary and sentences.
This will not help you to build ability of speaking, you may say some words but can't make a sentence.
If you really made up your mind to learn Chinese, start with sentence structures.
I literally spend OVER A YEAR creating valuable contents and compiling all the topics that are popular & most needed from my past teaching experience to total beginners.

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Taiwanese Hokkien, or simply Taiwanese, is a variety of the Hokkien language spoken by over 70% of Taiwan's population. It is primarily spoken by descendants of Hoklo immigrants from southern Fujian. As one of Taiwan's national languages, Taiwanese is similar to Hokkien dialects in Amoy, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, and regions in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Penang, the Philippines, Medan, and Southern Peninsular Malaysia.
Cantonese, the traditional prestige variety of Yue Chinese, originates from Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta. With over 85.5 million native speakers, it is crucial to the cultural identity of people in southeastern China, Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas communities. In mainland China, Cantonese is the lingua franca of Guangdong province and neighboring areas like Guangxi. It is the dominant and co-official language of Hong Kong and Macau, and widely spoken among Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and the Western world.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
