Taiwanese Hokkien (Chinese:臺灣閩南語; Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Tâi-oân Bân-lâm-gí / Tâi-oân Bân-lâm-gú; Tâi-lô: Tâi-uân Bân-lâm-gí / Tâi-uân Bân-lâm-gú), commonly known as Taiwanese (Tâi-oân-oē臺灣話 or Tâi-gí / Tâi-gú 臺語), is a variant of Hokkien spoken by about 70% of the population of Taiwan. The largest linguistic group in Taiwan, in which Hokkien is considered a native language, is known as Hoklo or Hō-ló. The correlation between language and ethnicity is generally true, though not absolute, as some Hoklo speak Hokkien poorly while some non-Hoklo speak Hokkien fluently. Pe̍h-ōe-jī (POJ) is a popular orthography for this variant of Hokkien.
Taiwanese Hokkien is generally similar to Quanzhou dialect, Zhangzhou dialect, and Amoy, but differences occur in terms of vocabulary and various pronunciations of words, in many cases significantly enough to be unintelligible among each other. However, due to the mass popularity of Hokkien entertainment media from Taiwan, Taiwanese has become a prominent variety of Hokkien, especially since the 1980s.

What's the difference between Taiwanese Hokkien vs Singaporean Hokkien? In today's video, Angel invited Glen (a Singaporean) to converse in Hokkien together! But Angel's Hokkien is not good though.
There is really quite a bit of the differences between Taiwanese Hokkien and Singaporean Hokkien! I wonder if it's because both Angel and Glen are just no good at Hokkien or is it because there is really such a big difference in Taiwanese Hokkien and Singaporean Hokkien!

Hello guys! Today's video is very different!
I am not teaching mandarin Chinese but Taiwanese!
Do you ever heared how Taiwanese language sounds like?
Personally I think it sounds very different from mandarin Chinese.
In Taiwan we have many dialects, I can speak both Taiwanese and mandarin Chinese, some people can speak Hakka and many other languages since we also have aboriginals.
Nowadays many Taiwanese young people can't speak Taiwanese, I think it is quit sad because this is actually a beautiful language.
For learning Taiwanese, there is a spelling system which is different from Hanyu pinyin and Zhuyin, you can actually find more information in following websites about Taiwanese:
https://itaigi.tw/k/%E4%BD%A0%E5%A5%BD/
Taiwanese dictionary:
https://twblg.dict.edu.tw/holodict_new/default.jsp
There are 2 different views of people are battling about if Taiwanese has characters or not.
In today's lesson I am not going that deep, I will only write the Chinese characters (since I mainly teach mandarin Chinese in this channel) and English meaning, for pronunciation, trust yourself and just copy me! Enjoy!

Taiwanese Hokkien, or simply Taiwanese, is a variety of the Hokkien language spoken by over 70% of Taiwan's population. It is primarily spoken by descendants of Hoklo immigrants from southern Fujian. As one of Taiwan's national languages, Taiwanese is similar to Hokkien dialects in Amoy, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou, and regions in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Penang, the Philippines, Medan, and Southern Peninsular Malaysia.
Cantonese, the traditional prestige variety of Yue Chinese, originates from Guangzhou and the Pearl River Delta. With over 85.5 million native speakers, it is crucial to the cultural identity of people in southeastern China, Hong Kong, Macau, and overseas communities. In mainland China, Cantonese is the lingua franca of Guangdong province and neighboring areas like Guangxi. It is the dominant and co-official language of Hong Kong and Macau, and widely spoken among Overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia and the Western world.

TAIWANESE HOKKIEN
Native to: Taiwan
Native speakers: 16 million (2017)
Language family: Sino-Tibetan
is a variety of the Hokkien language spoken natively by about 70% of the population of Taiwan. It is spoken by the Taiwanese Hoklo people, who descended from immigrants from southern Fujian during the Qing dynasty.[12] The Pe̍h-ōe-jī (POJ) romanization is a popular orthography for Taiwanese.
Taiwanese is generally similar to spoken Amoy, Quanzhou, and Zhangzhou (branches of Chinese Minnan), as well as their dialectal forms used in Southeast Asia, and are generally mutually intelligible.[13] The mass popularity of Hokkien entertainment media from Taiwan has given prominence to the Taiwanese variety of Hokkien, especially since the 1980s.

Enjoy!

Local languages, including Taiwanese Hokkien, or Taigi, have become more popular amid growing resentment toward mainland China, the Wall Street Journal reported. What food is Taiwan known for?.
I have for years been using Hoklo or Taiwanese Hokkien based on the principle that “Taiwanese” is an identity that should be inclusive, not set aside for one group of people, which in this case the MOE is doing.
Something along these lines would also happen if Taiwanese Hokkien were abbreviated to “Taiwanese,” transforming a very clear issue into a dicey linguistic problem.
Therefore, it could be called “Taiwanese Hokkien” or “Taiwanese Southern Min.” Both terms have been around for quite some time and successfully used in linguistic literature ... or “Taiwanese Hokkien.”.
"Now, our responsibility to unite the people, oppose annexation [by China] and ensure national sovereignty," he said, speaking in Taiwanese, also known as Hokkien, rather than the main language of government, Mandarin... China calls Lai a "separatist.".

The awards celebrate not only Mandopop but artists singing in Taiwanese - also known as Hokkien - Hakka and Indigenous languages like Bunun, a visible sign of the Taiwan government's efforts to promote once suppressed tongues.
It is also rich with symbolism as in Taiwanese Hokkien, “pineapple” is pronounced “onglai,” with “ong” meaning “prosperity” and “lai” meaning “to come.” So eating pineapple symbolizes the arrival of prosperity.
