The Syrian Democratic People's Party (Arabic:حزب الشعب الديمقراطي السوري, translit.Hizb Al-Sha'ab Al-Dimuqratiy Al-Suriy) is a left-wing, democratic opposition party in Syria that is banned by the Syrian government. It is a part of several Syrian opposition alliances which are aimed at overthrowing the Syrian government, the National Democratic Rally, and the Damascus Declaration.
The party emerged in 1973 from a split within the Syrian Communist Party. Until 2005, it operated under the name Syrian Communist Party (Political Bureau), and was also known as the Syrian Communist Party (Riyad al-Turk) after its founder Riyad al-Turk. In 2005, the party announced its departure from communism and turned to social democracy. Today, the party is a member of the Progressive Alliance.
Origins and split from the SCP
The party was formed from a split in the Syrian Communist Party, beginning in the late 1960s with disagreements over Arab nationalism and the authoritarian leadership of Khaled Bakdash. Radicals around Riyad al-Turk criticized Bakdash and asked for internal party democracy, as well as a more favorable view towards Arab nationalism and pan-Arabism. They later objected to the Bakdash leadership's decision to join the pro-government National Progressive Front (NPF) in 1972. Essentially the choice facing the Communists then was to submit to the leadership of the Ba'th Party in the NPF, which brought a variety of restrictions, or attempt to function outside the law. The old leadership of the party under Bakdash chose the former option; the more left-wing elements followed Riad al-Turk into opposition, finalizing the split in the party. Turk's faction took the name SCP (Political Bureau), but was also known by the name of its leader, as SCP (Turk).
The Syrian Communist Party (Arabic: الحزب الشيوعي السوري, transliterated as Al-Hizb Al-Shuyū'ī Al-Sūrī) is a communist party in Syria. The party emerged from a split in the Syrian Communist Party in 1986, formed by the pro-Perestroika faction led by Yusuf Faisal.
At the time of the 2000 Damascus Spring the party was able to publish a newspaper called an-Nour ('the Light').
The 11th party congress, held in March 2011, re-elected Hanin Nimir as First Secretary of the party.
The Communist Party of China (CPC) is the founding and ruling political party of the People's Republic of China (PRC). The CPC is the sole governing party of China, although it coexists alongside eight other legal parties that comprise the United Front. It was founded in 1921, chiefly by Chen Duxiu and Li Dazhao. The party grew quickly, and by 1949 the CPC had driven the Kuomintang (KMT) government from mainland China after a 10-year civil war, thus leading to the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The CPC is currently the world's second largest political party with a membership of 87.79 million as of 2015.

History
In the early 1920s a group of young militants of the Social Democratic Party (Alþýðuflokkur) came into contact with the international communist movement. Their ideology and that of their party leader, was quickly growing apart. The communists formed a radical section within the party which they called the Association of Young Communists (Félag ungra kommúnista) in November 1922. The group evolved into the Sparta Social Democratic Association (Jafnaðarmannafélagið Sparta) in 1926 but eventually they left the social democrats to form their own party as suggested by Comintern in 1928. The Communist Party of Iceland (KFI) was formed in November 1930 and became a member of Comintern. KFI published Verkalýðsblaðið.
In 1938 another splinter group, which had left the social democrats the year before, unified itself with the communists forming the Popular Unity Party - Socialist Party (Sameiningarflokkur alþýðu - Sósíalistaflokkurinn). The new party did not continue the Comintern membership. However, the communists were dominant in the party and it was mostly the same as its predecessor. In 1956 the Socialist Party formed the People's Alliance as an electoral alliance with yet another splinter group from the Social Democratic Party. The People's Alliance became a political party in 1968.
