The Sunday Times is the largest-selling British national "quality" Sunday newspaper. It is published by Times Newspapers Ltd, a subsidiary of News UK, which is in turn owned by News Corp. Times Newspapers also publishes The Times. The two papers were founded independently and have been under common ownership only since 1966. They were bought by News International in 1981.
The Sunday Times occupies a dominant position in the quality Sunday market; its circulation of just under one million equals that of its main rivals, The Sunday Telegraph, The Observer and The Independent on Sunday, combined. While some other national newspapers moved to a tabloid format in the early 2000s, The Sunday Times has retained the larger broadsheet format and has said that it will continue to do so. It sells more than twice as many copies as its sister paper, The Times, which is published Monday to Saturday.
The Sunday Times has acquired a reputation for the strength of its investigative reporting – much of it by its award-winning Insight team – and also for its wide-ranging foreign coverage. It has a number of popular writers, columnists and commentators including Jeremy Clarkson, A. A. Gill and Bryan Appleyard. It was Britain's first multi-section newspaper and remains substantially larger than its rivals. A typical edition contains the equivalent of 450 to 500 tabloid pages. Besides the main news section, it has standalone News Review, Business, Sport, Money and Appointments sections – all broadsheet. There are three magazines (The Sunday Times Magazine, Culture, and Style) and three tabloid supplements (Travel, Home and Driving). It has a website and separate digital editions configured for both the iOS operating system for the AppleiPad and the Android operating system for such devices as the GoogleNexus, all of which offer video clips, extra features and multimedia and other material not found in the printed version of the newspaper.
The Sunday Times is a weekly Sri Lankanbroadsheet initially published by the now defunct Times Group, until 1991, when it was taken over by Wijeya Newspapers. The paper features articles of journalists such as defence columnist Iqbal Athas and Ameen Izzadeen. The daily counterpart of the Sri Lankan Sunday Times is the Daily Mirror.
History
The first Times newspaper, Ceylon Times was established in 1846. The Times of Ceylon Ltd, which existed for 131 years, was taken over by the Sri Lankan government in 1977. Ranjith Wijewardena, the son of D. R. Wijewardena, and the chairman of Wijeya Newspapers Ltd, purchased the company which was under liquidation, in 1986. However, the newspaper The Sunday Times came into being in 1991.
The Sunday Times of Ceylon was an English language weekly newspaper in Ceylon published by Times of Ceylon Limited (TOCL). It was founded in 1923 and was published from Colombo. In 1966 it had an average net sales of 34,856. It was published under different names during its existence, including Times of Ceylon Sunday Illustrated, Times Weekender and Sunday Times. It had an average circulation of 29,613 in 1970, 29,054 in 1973 and 18,500 in 1976.
TOCL was nationalised by the Sri Lankan government in August 1977. The state-run TOCL faced financial and labour problems and on 31 January 1985 it and its various publications closed down. Ranjith Wijewardena, chairman of Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited (ANCL) before it was nationalised in in July 1973, bought the trade names and library of the TOCL publications in 1986. Wijewardena's company, Wijeya Newspapers, subsequently started various newspapers using the names of former TOCL publications. The Sunday Times started publishing in 1987.
The Sunday Times Rich List 2008 was published on 27 April 2008.
Since 1989 the UK national Sunday newspaperThe Sunday Times (sister paper to The Times) has published an annual magazine supplement to the newspaper called the Sunday Times Rich List. The list is based on an estimate of the minimum wealth of the richest 1,000 people or families in the United Kingdom as of January of that year, and is compiled by Dr Philip Beresford.
The list was previewed on ITV1 on 24 April 2008 in Britain's Rich List: Giving It Away, presented by millionaire Duncan Bannatyne.
As in previous years, the List was widely covered in other UK media on the day of its publication; the Daily Telegraph, for example, noted that "Kirsty Bertarelli, a former Miss United Kingdom from Staffordshire, is the highest placed woman, appearing at number six on the list alongside her husband, the biotechnology tycoon Ernesto Bertarelli."
The Sunday TimesRich List is a list of the 1,000 wealthiest people or families in the United Kingdom, updated annually in April and published as a magazine supplement by British national Sunday newspaperThe Sunday Times since 1989. The editorial decisions governing the compilation of the Rich List are published in the newspaper and online as its "Rules of engagement".
The Rich List is not limited to British citizens and it includes individuals and families born overseas but who predominantly work and/or live in Britain. This excludes some individuals with prominent financial assets in Britain.
The editors estimate subjects' wealth from a range of public information, based on values in January each year. They typically explain their actions by stating: "We measure identifiable wealth, whether land, property, racehorses, art or significant shares in publicly quoted companies. We exclude bank accounts—to which we have no access... We try to give due consideration to liabilities."
Sunday (i/ˈsʌndeɪ/ or /ˈsʌndi/) is the day of the week following Saturday but before Monday. For most Christians, Sunday is observed as a day of worship and rest, holding it as the Lord's Day and the day of Christ's resurrection. Sunday is a day of rest in most Western countries, part of 'the weekend'. In some Muslim countries and Israel, Sunday is the first work day of the week. According to the Hebrew calendars and traditional Christian calendars, Sunday is the first day of the week, and according to the International Organization for StandardizationISO 8601 Sunday is the seventh and last day of the week. No century in the Gregorian calendar starts on a Sunday, whether its first year is considered to be '00 or '01. The Jewish New Year never falls on a Sunday. (The rules of the Hebrew calendar are designed such that the first day of Rosh Hashanah will never occur on the first, fourth, or sixth day of the Jewish week; i.e., Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday).
Etymology
Sunday, being the day of the Sun, as the name of the first day of the week, is derived from Hellenistic astrology, where the seven planets, known in English as Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury and the Moon, each had an hour of the day assigned to them, and the planet which was regent during the first hour of any day of the week gave its name to that day. During the 1st and 2nd century, the week of seven days was introduced into Rome from Egypt, and the Roman names of the planets were given to each successive day.

Well, I'm trying to read my Sunday Times; it costs a nickel & 12 dimes I bought it late Saturday night; I've almost finished but not quite It weighed a ton it seemed to me that each one of them must take a tree to make & also, I should think, it takes about a gallon of ink Right off the bat in Section One: who, when, where, how & what got done The outlook's bleak, it's clear to see; Section 1 depresses me All the heavy duty news; it gives you the over-informed blues & I'm so relieved when 1's all through; thumb through 1, get on to 2 Now I'm a show-biz kinda guy; the business is my life & that's no lie 2's one of my favorite parts: Entertainment & Leisure Arts Which movie's great, which Broadway play; exclamation points the way The next time that things get this great is Sports way up in Section Eight I hoist the Times into my lap & take some time to heave some crap I guess some guys dig Section 3 but Business bores the pants off me If you want boring, here's a chore: Week in Review, that Section 4 & who in the hell wants a review? Once was enough for me, thank you After 3 & 4 it's clear you want to get away from here Escape to somewhere & you'll try; it's time to Travel; Section 5 Guatamala's always quaint although the right-wing death squads ain't Satanic cults down the block; better stay at home, escape culture shock The Magazine is Section 6 with food & wine, full-color pics So sexy that you gotta stare at all the advertisements in there So glossy that the pages stick; flipping one at a time's a trick The crossword will keep you up late; & it's camp if your kids are overweight Section7, Book Review; it comes with me into the loo The TV section; that's 11; naturally that goes with 7 7, 11, that's it; I read them there when 'ere I sit & read 8 reviews of those who write; leads one to think that one day one might You need a job? That's Section 9. You're not jobless? Hey, that's fine Section 10 is Real Estate. You're not homeless? Hey, that's great This town is so strange; in this town life's subject to change What goes up comes down again. Hold on to 9, hold on to 10 Well, it's Tuesday & I'm still not done with Sunday's Times, son of a gun Monday & Tuesday's still unread; I could have read War & Peace instead A great relief I do not doubt when it's time to throw all of these Times out Tomorrow I'll buy Wednesday's Times; it's just one nickel.just one nickel.just one nickel & three dimes
