LIVE: Donald Trump speaks to Hurricane Helene victims
US President Donald Trump receives a briefing on Hurricane Helene recovery.
President Trump suffered an early legal setback to his plan to overhaul immigration on Thursday when a judge temporarily blocked his attempt to end automatic birthright citizenship.
Trump signed an executive order on Monday to remove the right to citizenship for children born to those in the United States without legal status, or with temporary legal status such as tourists and university students.
The order was immediately challenged by 24 states and multiple migrant advocacy groups. The United States is by most accounts still a rich nation. The world’s largest economy has defied predictions of a recession in recent years to outperform other developed countries.
Trump wants to further enrich Americans by expanding and extending tax cuts introduced during his last administration, imposing tariffs, deregulating industries and deporting millions of illegal immigrants.
A swathe of executive orders signed this week have offered some clues about how he plans to achieve this. The question economists are trying to answer is: will it work?

The UK, along with the US, signed an international commitment to a global minimum corporate tax rate of 15 per cent.
Under the arrangement, companies that operate abroad and pay lower rates have to pay “top-ups” to HMRC on UK profits until they reach the 15 per cent threshold.
The Office for Budget Responsibility has said the measures are expected to generate £2.8 billion a year by the end of this parliament.
Trump cast doubt on the future of the pact when he withdrew US support, potentially leaving a significant hole in Britain’s public finances.
