Stephen Scott (b. Corvallis, Oregon, 1944) is an Americancomposer best known for his development of the bowed piano (borrowed from C. Curtis-Smith, who invented the technique in 1972), which involves a grand piano being played by an ensemble of ten musicians who utilize lengths of horsehair, nylon filament, and other utensils to bow the strings of the piano, creating an orchestra-like sound. Scott founded the Bowed Piano Ensemble in 1977, for which he composes. His work is associated with the minimal style of composition.
Several recordings with Scott's Bowed Piano Ensemble have been released by New Albion Records. Scott has performed and composed pieces in a thirteen limit tuning by Terry Riley.
Stephen John Scott (11 September 1955 – 16 June 1994) was a New Zealand rugby union player. A halfback, Scott represented Canterbury at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, on the 1980 tour of Australia and Fiji. He played four matches on that tour but did not play in any internationals.
He wrote mainly on the history, lifestyle, customs, and beliefs of the Amish and both the Old Order and the Conservative Mennonites. His book "An Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups" is an important source on both Old Order Mennonites and also on Conservative Mennonites and still is an often cited book.

Jeanfrançois Prins - Stephen Scott 'Round Midnight @ A Trane - Berlin Part1
My dear friend Stephen Scott and I had been talking about doing some instrumental gigs together for a long time, after having a ball performing together with Judy Niemack in NYC several times. Stephen was on the road with Ron Carter's band, and happened to be in Berlin on the first night of my feature week in early July '09 at the beautiful A Trane. So when we figured that out, we immediately decided to jump on the occasion and have our first European performance together there. 'Round midnight was our first tune that night. It was also my very first time to play with wonderful British bassist Phil Donkin. One of the greatest young drummers around: my friend Rainer Winch. Too long to be featured here in one video, part 2 is just a click away, enjoy!

The Music of Stephen Scott: A Retrospective
Celebrate the music of Professor Stephen Scott, director of the world-renowned Bowed Piano Ensemble, who will retire from Colorado College at the end of the current academic year. Three separate events will take place over the course of the weekend, highlighting Scott's unique contributions to music through the presentation of familiar and obscure works—many of which may be heard live for the final time since the Bowed Piano Ensemble will soon retire as well.
This first concert features works by Scott for solo piano as well as for voice (featuring Victoria Hansen), in addition to a full performance of Vikings of the Sunrise, considered by many to be his magnum opus.
