European settlement in the region began in the late 17th century with a French fur trading outpost on the banks of the Kaministiquia River. It grew into an important transportation hub with its port forming an important link in the shipping of grain and other products from western Canada, through the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway, to the east coast. Forestry and manufacturing played important roles in the city's economy. They have declined in recent years, but have been replaced by a "knowledge economy" based on medical research and education. Thunder Bay is the site of the Thunder Bay Regional Research Institute.
Following World War II, ex-Navy engineer Steve Martin (James Stewart) and his friend Johnny Gambi (Dan Duryea) come to Louisiana with dreams of wealth. They build an offshore oil drilling platform with the help of a large company, and find themselves in a lucrative business. However, local shrimp fishermen are hostile, feeling their livelihood is at risk. A further complication is the budding romance between Steve and the daughter of one of the shrimpers.
Production Dates: late September to mid-November 1952
Filmed in 1.37 to 1 aspect ratio
Released in 1.85 to 1 widescreen aspect ratio
The film marked Universal's first use of stereophonic sound, which at the time was presentable only in select theaters. Some contemporary reviewers complained that the sound, with its use of three speakers, was loud and distracting.
Thunder Bay is a large bay on the north shore of Lake Superior, in Thunder Bay District, Ontario, Canada. The bay is about 50 kilometres (31mi) long and 22 kilometres (14mi) wide. It is bordered to the east by the Sibley Peninsula at the southern tip of which is Thunder Cape, marking the entrance to the bay for ships approaching from the east. The peninsula when viewed from the north shore of the lake has the appearance of a Sleeping Giant.
The harbour at the City of Thunder Bay is Canada's westernmost port on the Great Lakes, and the end of Great Lakes navigation.
The Ojibwa called it Animikie, meaning "thunder". French explorers called it Baie du Tonnerre which was translated to Thunder Bay in English. In 1871, the bay gave its name to the newly created Thunder Bay District, and in 1970, the amalgamated city of Port Arthur and Fort William also adopted the name Thunder Bay.
St. Patrick High School is a Catholichigh school located in the south end of Thunder Bay, Ontario. It is part of the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, and its amenities include a chapel, custom-built music rooms, newly renovated auditorium (as of 2010), two gyms, a fully functional cafeteria, and wheelchair accessibility. The schools offers courses in French immersion. Unlike schools in the public system, students at St. Patrick are required to wear uniforms. Its varsity team is the St. Patrick Saints.
History
Fort William Vocational School was founded in 1931 and later changed its name to Selkirk Collegiate & Vocational Institute. In 1988 it was bought by the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board to replace Sacred Heart High School, and its name changed to St. Patrick High School. It is currently located in the building formerly occupied by Selkirk High School of the Lakehead District School Board system.
Saint Patrick is one of the two high schools to have uniforms in Thunder Bay.
Nativity Convent School (St. Patrick) was established on September 8, 1891. Among the first students was Irma Cody, daughter of William F. Cody. Five young women were the first graduates in 1895.
In 1916, St. Patrick School was constructed at Fourth and Walnut Streets, at an expense of $52,000. The building was described as the "finest educational structure in the area."
The current St. Patrick High School building was opened in 1955 near E and Silber Streets. The former building continued to serve as the elementary school. In 1967, it was renamed McDaid Elementary, in honor of Father Patrick McDaid, the pastor of the parish from 1910 to 1948.
St. Patrick School was established as a grade school in 1906 by the Sisters of St. Joseph. The high school was added in 1951.
The school currently teaches preschool through high school in a Catholic environment. It is one of the few preschool-12 schools supported by a single parish. The school has served families from Portland and the surrounding area since 1906, providing them with the opportunity to give their children a quality Catholic education. The school's mission statement is: We Pray. We Learn. We Achieve. The standardized test scores are regularly the highest of all schools in the Ionia County area.
History
THE FIRST SCHOOL BUILDING: 1906 The first school in 1906 was two-stories of cement block, 59½ x 42½, with cement block basement and an interior finished with Southern Pine. The newspaper article about the new school noted that it was lighted with electricity. “The rooms are 12½ and 13 feet in height, airy, pleasant and commodious, both upstairs and down and the school altogether has pleasant surroundings. There are plenty of radiators in each room and the heater and boiler is of such capacity that there is no doubt that the building will be properly warmed,” said the column in the Portland Review and Observer. This building was sufficient for the first forty years.
