St. Patrick's is the only English-speaking parish in the Archdiocese of Quebec. Founded in 1832, the parish has occupied several different buildings as the population of English-speaking Catholics, primarily Irish, in Quebec City has swelled and shrunk.
History
Before St. Patrick's was established, the Irish were allowed use of the Basilica and the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church in Place Royale for their services. English-speaking Catholics in the city were organized into a separate congregation with a dedicated priest in 1822. Father Patrick McMahon was the priest of congregation from 1822–25 and again after 1828. McMahon raised the money for a separate church and lobbied the French-speaking Church Wardens. The first St. Patrick's was built on what is now McMahon Street (named after Father Patrick) inside the walls of the old city in 1832. This church was replaced by a larger church in 1914, but was still used occasionally until 1967. It was destroyed by fire in 1971, and its outside facade was reused as part of an annex of the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec hospital.
The parish lies on both sides of the River Shannon. As of 1845 the portion of the parish in County Limerick was partly in the borough of Limerick, where it included the Chapelry of Singland, and partly in the barony of Clanwilliam.
The portion in County Clare was in the barony of Bunratty Lower, and was known as the Kilquane district. It contains the village of Ardnacrusha.
The parish is 4 by 2.5 miles (6.4 by 4.0km) and covers 722 acres (292ha) of the borough, 793 acres (321ha) of Clanwilliam and 3,894 acres (1,576ha) of Bunratty.
The Blackwater river, which runs into the Shannon from the north, at one time powered flour mills.
In Nigeria, secondary school is for children from ages 10 to 15. Secondary education is divided into two parts: the junior and senior secondary education. The junior secondary education which takes in ages 10-12 is pre-vocational and academic in scope. Most courses are compulsory, except religious and language courses (electives). For students to continue into senior secondary school, they have to make passing grades in the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examinations. In senior secondary school which now consists of ages 13-15, students are allowed to choose which areas to concentrate on, be it science, arts, commerce, or technical studies. All students have to sit for a Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE), of which there are two: the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examination Council SSCE. Students must pass this before being admitted into any university.
Education in the Soviet Union was organized by the leader, Joseph Stalin, in a highly centralized government-run system. It featured the advantages of total access for all citizens and of post-education employment. The Soviet Union recognized that the foundation of their system depended upon complete dedication of the people to the state through education in the broad fields of engineering, the natural sciences, the life sciences and social sciences, along with basic education. The Bolshevik revolution of November 1917 caused radical change from the systems of tsarist Russia, and the Bolsheviks had to struggle to keep the revolution from failing. Because of this education was crucial to the success of the revolution and later on the perseverance of the Soviet Union. With the Bolshevik takeover in 1917, Soviet ideology began to permeate the educational system, and with each change in leadership and/or ideology, institutions of education underwent changes as well. Beginning with the period of the New Economic Policy (NEP, 1921-1928) and ending with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 with Perestroika, the changes in soviet educational policy can be traced in such a way that reflects each time period and its historical events. While education in the Soviet Union usually varied throughout the course of its history due to ideological changes, also, variations in education depended on a person's geographical location. Often the official stance on education and its institutions differed significantly from what actually occurred, due to what was feasible.
St. Patrick's Higher Secondary School or SPS is one of the oldest schools in eastern India. It is a kindergarten through 12th grade school of secondary education, located in Asansol, in the western part of West Bengal, about 200km from Kolkata (Calcutta).
Founding
St. Patrick’s School was built in 1877 as a Scholasticate for Belgian Jesuits. It was abandoned by them because of severe Asansol climate. It was taken over by Christian Brothers in 1890 and opened as St. Patrick’s Boarding of Anglo- Indian and European Boys. Thus it can be said that St. Patrick's was founded in 1891, by the Congregation of Christian Brothers, a Catholic society from Ireland that has undertaken missionary and educational work worldwide. This group, also informally known as the Christian Brothers, was founded by Edmund Ignatius Rice. St. Patrick's School, Asansol is one of the 19 Christian Brothers Schools in India. For a brief span during the Second World War, the administration of the School was under the Jesuit Mission of Patna and the school was shifted to Kurji.
