Portuguese and Spanish while having some similarities, are different and distinct languages each with their own unique traits and characteristics. Both are part of a broader group known as West Iberian Romance, which also includes several other languages or dialects with fewer speakers, all of which are mutually intelligible to some degree.
The most obvious differences are in pronunciation. Mutual intelligibility is generally greater for the written languages than for their spoken forms. Compare, for example, the following sentences:
—roughly equivalent to the English proverb "A word to the wise is sufficient."
A Portuguese Guyanese is a Guyanese whose ancestors came from Portugal, or a Portuguese who has Guyanese citizenship.
History
The history of Portuguese Guyanese community relates directly with the end of slavery. After the abolition of slavery in 1834, the planters of British Guiana sought alternative sources of labour. They were eager to recruit white labourers in order to bolster the proportion of white to coloured residents in the colony.
In 1834, the first Portuguese people arrived from the Portuguese island of Madeira, having been sponsored by a coalition of planters and by the colonial government. Between 1834 and 1882, some 30,645 Portuguese arrived in Guyana, the vast majority from Madeira, but others from the Azores Islands. Mixed race Portuguese speaking elements from Cape Verde and Brazil also were brought in.
The Madeiran Portuguese, or simply Madeirans as they came to be known, soon shunned working in the fields given the high mortality rate due to tropical diseases. They settled in Georgetown, New Amsterdam and other towns in Guyana and dedicated themselves into the venture of the retail and wholesale trades. By 1851, 173 out of 296 shops in Georgetown were Portuguese-owned, while the figure was 28 out of 52 in New Amsterdam. In 1891, Portuguese numbered 4.3% of the population of Guyana.
Portuguese people were a key factor to the Age of Exploration, discovering several unknown lands to the Europeans in Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania.
Spanish wines (Spanish:vinos españoles) are wines produced in Spain. Located on the Iberian Peninsula, Spain has over 2.9million acres (over 1.17million hectares) planted—making it the most widely planted wine producing nation but it is the third largest producer of wine in the world, the largest being France followed by Italy. This is due, in part, to the very low yields and wide spacing of the old vines planted on the dry, infertile soil found in many Spanish wine regions. The country is ninth in worldwide consumptions with Spaniards drinking, on average, 21.6 litres (5.706 US gal) per person a year. The country has an abundance of native grape varieties, with over 400 varieties planted throughout Spain though 80 percent of the country's wine production is from only 20 grapes—including the reds Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Monastrell; the whites Albariño from Galicia, Palomino, Airen, and Macabeo; and the three cava grapes Parellada, Xarel·lo, and Macabeo.
Major Spanish wine regions include the Rioja and Ribera del Duero, which are known for their Tempranillo production; Valdepeñas, drunk by Unamuno and Hemingway, known for high quality tempranillo at low prices; Jerez, the home of the fortified wineSherry; Rías Baixas in the northwest region of Galicia that is known for its white wines made from Albariño and Catalonia which includes the Cava and still wine producing regions of the Penedès as well the Priorat region.
"Spanish 101" is the second episode of the first season of the American comedy television series Community. It aired in the United States on NBC on September 24, 2009.
Plot
Jeff (Joel McHale) is late to the group's study session, and the rest of the group is irritated, but only Britta (Gillian Jacobs) is willing to say anything to him. She berates the rest of the study group for not having enough self-respect to speak up, and then mentions the plight of Guatemalan journalists, repressed by their own government. Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) and Annie (Alison Brie) are horrified at what Britta describes, but their discussion is interrupted by Jeff's arrival. He greets everyone, charming each of them, except for Britta, who tries to address his tardiness while the rest of the group shouts her down.
Jeff gives Britta a card to apologize for the bad first impression he made two weeks earlier, but Britta remains wary of his advances, citing her "douche-ray vision" and criticizing him for exploiting the other, more naive members of the study group. After she brushes Jeff off, Shirley and Annie catch her and ask for more information about Guatemala. Britta mentions a journalist named Chacata Panecos who had been murdered by his government. Shirley and Annie plan a protest, featuring a candlelight vigil and brownies.
Words is the debut album by American R&B musician Tony Rich (under the moniker "The Tony Rich Project"), released January 16, 1996 on LaFace Records. The album is produced, written, arranged and performed by Rich. In 1997, the album won a Grammy Award for the Best R&B Album.
At the start of 1996 with the acoustic R&B ballad, "Nobody Knows", the song was a hit peaking at #2 for 2 weeks, going platinum, and spending almost a year on the Billboard Hot 100 (47 weeks).
In total three singles were released from Words: "Nobody Knows", "Like a Woman", and "Leavin'".
"Words" is a 1989 song recorded by the English band The Christians. It was their first single from their second album, Colour. Released in December 1989 in Ireland and UK and in the first months of 1990 in other Europeans countries, the song was the first major hit from the band outside the UK.
Song's lyrics are written on the cover of the CD maxi and the vinyl.
This single had a great success in France, although the group was not really known to the general public. The song achieved a lesser success in UK where it reached #18 (as in Sweden) and was a failure in Germany.
In France, "Words" debuted at the bottom of the chart (Top 50) on March 10, 1990, but reached very quickly the first places, topping for two weeks in May but managed to stay in the Top 10 for 11 weeks. It fell off the chart after its 19th week. Thus it was the best-selling single of the band in France. The song was also a big hit in Ireland and the Netherlands, reaching there the Top 10.

Do Modern Spanish and Portuguese People have North African or Arab Blood?
Are Spaniards and Portuguese today mixed with North Africans or Arabs? Today we're going to be following up our last video on Latin America, and digging up the roots of the Iberian people groups.
Because of the hectic environment in pre-modern Iberia, the genetics, language, culture and attitude of the groups living there are quite unique in Europe, and that makes it a very interesting place to learn about.
Be sure to let me know your thoughts on Iberia and the rise of the Spaniards and Portuguese in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Top Gestures used by Portuguese People
No, this has nothing to do with Portuguese sign language. 🙂 But linguists argue that only about 30% or so of our real communication is directly through words. The rest is a combination of other linguistic elements such as intonation, pitch, volume, facial and body language.
So a few months back we started gathering what we think are the most commonly used gestures by the Portuguese.
Enjoy!

Enjoy!
