Sommelier Tries 20 Red Wines Under $15 | World of Wine | Bon Appétit
Sommelier André Hueston Mack has made a career tasting the finest of wines, but that doesn't mean he can't enjoy a bottle on the cheaper end of the spectrum. In fact, we asked him to enjoy twenty bottles of red wine under $15 and let us know his honest thoughts on them. Not all of these wines are winners (and that's part of the fun of it), but a few are and are well worth it.

The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
When you think of Brazil – what comes to mind? Football, the Amazon rainforest, Carnival, Tropical weather, and Caipirinhas. Brazil is the sixth largest wine producer in the Southern Hemisphere with 81,000 ha under vine and over 1.100 wineries. Yet, most people, including me, never connected the country to wine but maybe it is time to change that.
So let me taste my first wines from Brazil especially because many of you have asked me again and again to do so… The first vines arrived in Brazil in the 16th century, but it was not easy to cultivate the vine in the country’s mainly hot and humid climate. More successful than the fragile European Vitis Vinfera vines were the sturdy and high-yielding Hybrids Concord, Isabel, and Niagara and even today most of the vineyards in Brazil are planted to non-vinifera varietals.
However, Brazil also offers the right conditions for vinifera vines if you look carefully. The country is huge and the climatic conditions between the north and the south are very different.
90% of Brazilian wine production takes place in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This is the southernmost state of Brazil, and it is neighboring the more famous wine-producing countries Argentina and Uruguay.
The country’s wine industry is focused on sparkling wines, but its 10 growing regions allow for the production of various styles and the most widely planted vinifera grapes cover a lot of ground in terms of wine styles with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir for reds, and Chardonnay, Moscato Bianco and Glera for whites.

Burgundy, France (or as the French say, Bourgogne) is the most renowned wine region in the world, and the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from here are heralded as the best version of these grapes that money can buy. No region is more storied, more studied, or more sought after! And yes, Bourgogne produces the most famous, historic, and expensive wines in existence, but that’s only part of the story. Get ready to find out why the planet’s most famed wine region captivates the hearts and minds of sommeliers, collectors, investors, and normal consumers alike.
Enjoy the show? We're independently owned and produced and would LOVE your support! You can also watch ad-free! Join Vino VIP: https://www.visforvino.com/vip
All locations, wines, and wineries are listed at: https://visforvino.com/bourgogne/
DESCRIPTION: We'll start our journey into Burgundy (or as the French say, Bourgogne) with a visit to Beaune, the medieval town at the heart of the Bourgogne wine region. Next, we'll explore the Cité des Climats with Laurent Delaunay to get an introduction to the region and learn about its famous limestone soils, before enjoying lunch with him and his daughter at the museum restaurant. Afterward, we'll visit Fromagerie Alain Hess to sample some cheese, including the renowned yet funky Époisses, which was once named the best cheese in the world! We'll pair it with a traditional-method sparkling wine, Crémant de Bourgogne, from Paul Chollet. Next, we'll delve into the appellation levels of Bourgogne (Régionale, Village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru) before heading north to the cool hills of Chablis to explore Chardonnay vineyards rooted in ancient Kimmeridgian soil. After discussing Burgundy's iconic grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—I'll join Terroirs by Adeline for a cooking session, pairing the dishes with wines from the Côte Chalonnaise. In Beaune, we'll stop at Athenaeum, a unique wine and food bookstore unlike any I've ever seen. Then, we'll travel south to the laid-back Mâconnais region to enjoy Chardonnay with Domaine Sève. Following a visit to the Moutarderie Fallot mustard factory, I'll sit down with four winemakers from the Côte d'Or in the village of Chassagne-Montrachet, one of the world's most famous wine regions. Finally, we'll end our trip with a hike at the Rock of Solutré, reflecting on our time in this incredible region of Bourgogne.
