Sun Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, legal name Le Sony'r Ra; May 22, 1914 – May 30, 1993) was an American jazz composer, bandleader, piano and synthesizer player, poet and philosopher known for his experimental music, "cosmic philosophy," prolific output, and theatrical performances. He was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1979.
Born in Alabama in 1914, Blount would eventually become involved in the 1940s Chicago jazz scene. He soon abandoned his birth name, taking the name Sun Ra (Ra being the Egyptian God of the Sun) and developing a complex persona and mythology that would make him a pioneer of Afrofuturism: he claimed he was an alien from Saturn, and throughout his life, he consistently denied any ties to his prior identity. His compositions ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians, and his widely experimental and eclectic music would eventually touch on virtually the entire history of jazz, from ragtime to swing music, from bebop to free jazz. From the mid-1950s to his death, Ra led "The Arkestra", an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible line-up (although certain core members remained with the group through its various incarnations, including Marshal Allen, John Gilmore, June Tyson). Its performances often included dancers and musicians dressed in elaborate, futuristic costumes inspired by ancient Egyptian attire and the space age.

The Place is a dance and performance centre in Duke's Road near Euston in the London Borough of Camden. Originally the home base of the London Contemporary Dance Theatre from the 1970s, it is now the location of the London Contemporary Dance School, the Richard Alston Dance Company and the Robin Howard Dance Theatre.
Converted from a Grade-II listed Victorian drill hall built in 1888/9 for the Artists Rifles, The Place became the permanent home of the Contemporary Dance Trust in 1969. Since then, under the auspices of its founder Robin Howard, its first artistic director Robert Cohan, and subsequent directors Richard Alston, John Ashford, Nigel Hinds and Veronica Lewis, it has led the way in the development of contemporary dance in the UK. Virtually all of the major British contemporary dance artists to have emerged in the past 40 years have been associated with The Place at some stage in their careers, and its contribution to the popularity of contemporary dance in Britain today is hard to overstate.
The Place is the 34th album by Jandek, and the first of two released in 2003. Released as Corwood Industries, #0772, the album continues the style and story-line of the two that preceded it.
Space Is the Place is an 85-minute Afrofuturistscience fiction film made in 1972 and released in 1974. It was directed by John Coney, written by Sun Ra and Joshua Smith, and features Sun Ra and his Arkestra. A soundtrack was released on Evidence Records.
During the late-1960s and early-1970s, Sun Ra and his ensemble made several forays to California. In 1971, Sun Ra taught a course, "The Black Man in the Cosmos," at University of California, Berkeley. Over the course of these California visits, Sun Ra came to the attention of Jim Newman, who produced the film Space Is the Place starring Sun Ra and his Arkestra, and based, in part, on Sun Ra's Berkeley lectures.
Sun Ra, who has been reported lost since his European tour in June 1969, lands on a new planet in outerspace with his crew "The Arkestra" and decides to settle African Americans on this planet. The medium of transportation he had chosen is music. He travels back in time and returns to the Chicago strip club where he used to play piano with the name "Sonny Ray" in 1943. There he confronts The Overseer (Ray Johnson), a pimp-overlord, and they agree on a duel at cards for the fate of the Black race. Each card drawn is a minor goal to achieve for Ra or The Overseer which will determine the winner of the duel. Then, to present time, Ra disembarks from his spaceship at Oakland and tries to spread his word by meeting with young Blacks at an Oakland youth centre and opening an "employment agency" to recruit people eager to move to the planet. He also agrees with Jimmy Fey (Christopher Brooks), the minion of The Overseer, to arrange radio interviews, a record album, and eventually a concert that will help him dictate his message. At the end, Ra takes Fey's "Black parts" with him to the spaceship, leaving him with his White parts. Fey, now acting white, leaves The Overseer who loses the duel. The planet Earth is destroyed after Ra's spaceship flies into space.
Space Is the Place is a jazz album by Sun Ra. It was released in 1973. This album was originally issued in LP format on the ABC Records label, Blue Thumb Records; in the CD era it was issued with the Impulse! label.

Sun Ra and his Astro Intergalactic Infinity Arkestra:
Space Is the Place (released 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark by Storyville – 101 4271) is a Contemporary Jazz album by the Danish/Norwegian Dahl/Andersen/Christensen Trio.
Carsten Dahl is credited all the compositions on this delicate album, but along the lines he has drawn there are improvised really fresh and sometimes very freely between the three coequal "moment composers". Dahl is a sound processor, and a dynamic composer with such a personal expression that it is almost incomprehensible that he is right up at the top. Arild Andersen is one that really has understood what an enormous talent Dahl is in possession of. The Norwegian super bassist has worked with Dahl for years and the two have a chemistry that is rare. It is a sublime idea to invite the inimitable Jon Christensen on drums, and the result has to come out in the upper end.
The review of the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet awarded the album dice 6, and the review of the Norwegian electronic newspaper Nettavisen awarded the album dice 5.

Spaceee is the placeee... "Avant-garde jazz musician Sun Ra stars in the movie version of his concept album Space is the Place. Not following a linear plot line, this experimental film is a bizarre combination of social commentary, blaxploitation, science fiction, and concert performance. The opening scene is set in an intergalactic forest, with Sun Ra introducing his plan to use music as salvation for the black community. Back on Earth, he wears a disguise as Sunny Ray, a piano player in a 1940s Chicago strip club who causes an explosion with his sounds. Switching to a scene in a desert, he plays a card game called 'The End of the World,' with the Overseer (Ray Johnson), who is dressed in white and drives a white Cadillac. Sun Ra pulls out a spaceship card and the Arkestra play the song ...
Sun Ra was a big-band innovator, a pioneer of recording and playing with electronics, a poet, a cosmic philosopher, a bandleader and a keyboard innovator who claimed to be from Saturn. Herman Poole Blount would have turned 100 in 2014 had he not left us more than 20 years ago. But his spirit lives on, and so does his long-running band. On Halloween 2014, the Sun Ra Arkestra — complete with costumes inspired by Egyptian symbolism and science fiction — performed a rousing, out-of-this-world Tiny Desk Concert. The band was led by 91-year-old alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, who's been with the Arkestra since the early 1950s. All these years later, no one makes soul-stirring, spaced-out jazz quite like the Arkestra. SET LIST Along Came Ra/Zoom 0:23 Queer Notions 2:23 Angels And Demons At Pla...

Would you go outside?
Asked you to leave
I had enough of this ruckus
I wanna sleep
You say you're feeling lonely
I got to agree
I feel it coming slowly, slowly to me
Here comes, here comes the night train
And here comes, here comes the night train
Making a point in conversations
That I'll never hold
Protect myself from rumors
That I'll never be told
Choking on beauty
I usually don't even see
I'm living life through someone else
Looking at me
Here comes, here comes the night train
And here comes, here comes the night train
And here comes, here comes the night train
Now, all the evil thoughts I had
And all the harm I ever did
Stand right before me, eyes wide open
Where were they hidden?
I'm gonna rip it up
Bring it down, send it to hell
I hope somebody teach me something new
Somebody as guilty as me can break this spell
Here comes, here comes the night train
(Make it stop, oh, I can't make it stop)
Here comes, here comes the night train
(Make it stop, oh, I can't make it stop)
Here comes, here comes the night train
(Make it stop, oh, I can't make it stop, it's on again)
Get up, put up, open your eyes
Let the black blooded vein
Come to your brain
Angels 'round here don't sing
They have a curse upon me
(Make it stop, oh, I can't make it stop, it's on again)
Get up, put up, open your eyes
Let the black blooded vein
Come to your brain
Angels 'round here don't sing
They have a curse upon me

Angels 'round here don't sing
They have a curse upon me
(Just make it stop, oh, I can't make it stop, it's on again)
Get up, put up, open your eyes
Let the black blooded vein
Come to your brain
Angels 'round here don't sing
They have a curse upon me
(Make it stop, oh, I can't make it stop, it's on again)

Pay the entrance, leave it there
Get some style, cut your hair
Shouldn't be this, shouldn't be that
Take the heat, take a free kick, man
Try to get a grip on these times
'Cause the harder that I chase
The harder you're running
You don't have to be
