Launceston mixes city and country charms, with heritage streetscapes, a slice of urban wilderness and all the ingredients for a gourmet experience.
Tasmania's second-largest city is one of only two in Australia to be named as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, and its Saturday farmers' market is among the best in the nation.
One of the country’s oldest settlements, Launceston has a strikingly well-preserved cityscape of architectural styles from Georgian to mid-20th century, dotted with beautiful city parks and strung along the banks of the North Esk River and kanamaluka / River Tamar.
The city’s cultural offerings are wide and diverse. The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) is Australia’s largest regional gallery, while the likes of Design Tasmania showcase the craftsmanship of the state’s artisans and makers. Or you can take in a sporting event, with AFL matches played at the city’s UTAS Stadium.
Take a walk beneath the high walls of Cataract Gorge, dine on the riverfront, or cruise the Tamar’s waters. There’s every chance Launceston will rate among your favourite Australian regional cities.
