Judith Raskin
Judith Raskin (June 21, 1928 – December 21, 1984) was an American lyric soprano, renowned for her fine voice as well as her acting.
Raskin was born in New York to Harry A. Raskin, a high school music teacher, and Lillian Raskin, a grade school teacher. Her father aroused her childhood interest in music, leading her to study violin and piano, before she turned her focus to singing. In 1945, she graduated from Roosevelt High School, Yonkers and attended Smith College, where she majored in music. It was during her college years that she began taking singing lessons, which she continued after graduation in order to develop further the warmth and artistry of her voice.
In 1948, she married Dr. Raymond A. Raskin, with whom she had two children, Jonathon and Lisa.
Winning the Marian Anderson award in 1952 and 1953, Raskin started to perform in concerts throughout the United States. She secured national recognition in 1957 for her part in the televised American premiere of Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites. Her prominence continued to rise in July the same year when she starred in a concert version of Puccini's La bohème, with the Symphony of the Air in Central Park. Finally, in 1959, she joined the New York City Opera (NYCO), debuting in Mozart's Così fan tutte.

Songs of a Wayfarer
Songs of a Wayfarer is a song cycle for baritone and piano composed by John Ireland (1879–1962) between 1903 and c.1911, and published in 1912. It consists of settings of five poems by various poets.
A performance takes about 12 minutes. The songs are:
In 1919, Edwin Evans described the cycle as being "of unequal merit but containing at least one song worthy to rank with its successors". In 2007, Richard Nicholson in a review of the recording by Benjamin Luxon (baritone) and Alan Rowlands (piano) (1972 or 1973) remarked that the songs "clearly have a foot in the nineteenth-century, with the influence of Brahms and Stanford acutely felt, but they show any amount of artistic promise".

Book of Judith
The Book of Judith is a deuterocanonical book, included in the Septuagint and the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christian Old Testament of the Bible, but excluded from Jewish texts and assigned by Protestants to the Apocrypha. The book contains numerous historical anachronisms, which is why many scholars now accept it as non-historical; it has been considered a parable or perhaps the first historical novel.
The name Judith (Hebrew: יְהוּדִית, Modern Yehudit, Tiberian Yəhûḏîṯ ; "Praised" or "Jewess") is the feminine form of Judah.
Historical context
Original language
It is not clear whether the Book of Judith was originally written in Hebrew or in Greek. The oldest extant version is the Septuagint and might either be a translation from Hebrew or composed in Greek. Details of vocabulary and phrasing point to a Greek text written in a language modeled on the Greek developed through translating the other books in the Septuagint. The extant Hebrew language versions, whether identical to the Greek, or in the shorter Hebrew version, are medieval. The Hebrew versions name important figures directly such as the Seleucid king Antiochus Epiphanes, thus placing the events in the Hellenistic period when the Maccabees battled the Seleucid monarchs. The Greek version uses deliberately cryptic and anachronistic references such as "Nebuchadnezzar", a "King of Assyria," who "reigns in Nineveh," for the same king. The adoption of that name, though unhistorical, has been sometimes explained either as a copyist's addition, or an arbitrary name assigned to the ruler of Babylon.

Judith is a feminine given name derived from the Hebrew name יְהוּדִית or Yehudit, meaning "She will be praised" or "woman of Judea". Judith appeared in the Old Testament as the wife of Esau and in the Apocryphal Book of Judith.
The name was among the top 50 most popular given names for girls born in the United States between 1936 and 1956. Its popularity has since declined. It was the 893rd most popular name for baby girls born in the United States in 2012, down from 74th place in 1960.

As a leading singer with the New York City Opera, and then at the Metropolitan Opera from 1962 to 1972, Miss Raskin was hailed as one of the finest artists of her time. She had a voice that critics constantly referred to as ''ravishing.'' Combined with the beauty of her sound was a high order of musicianship. In addition, Miss Raskin was a beautiful woman and an excellent actress. As a complete artist, she captivated audiences whenever she appeared.
Yet she was discovered later than most singers. Born in New York on June 21, 1928, she studied the piano and violin as a child. At Smith College she discovered the potential of her voice and started serious study, working with Anna Hamlin. She won the Marian Anderson Award in 1952 and 1953, and other awards followed. Soon she was making appearances around the country, but she did not achieve renown until 1957, when she sang in a televised performance of Poulenc's ''Dialogues des Carmelites.'' It was the American premiere of the opera.
During these years she was also busy raising a family. She had married Dr. Raymond A. Raskin, a psychiatrist, when she was 20 years old, and they had two children.
In 1959 she joined the New York City Opera Company, and in 1962 went to the Metropolitan Opera. 20 Operatic Roles
Miss Raskin sang about 20 operatic roles, ranging from Mozart through Stravinsky and Poulenc. Her Mozart was especially admired; she sang leading roles in ''Le Nozze di Figaro,'' ''Don Giovanni,'' ''Cos i Fan Tutte'' and ''Die Zauberfl"ote.'' She was also hailed for her performance as Nanetta in Verdi's ''Falstaff'' at the Metropolitan Opera. Many believed her to be the most attractive Adele in Strauss' ''Fledermaus'' within memory. Among her contemporary operas were Stravinsky's ''Rake's Progress,'' Moore's ''Ballad of Baby Doe'' in addition to ''Carmelites.''
Miss Raskin never tried to be merely a singer of high notes, though her range equaled that of any lyric soprano. Nor did she ever attempt to sing louder than some of the tenors with whom she worked. Instead she concentrated on purity of sound and line.
''I've tried to make up in depth what I don't have in quantity,'' she once told an interviewer. ''There is a kind of singer who has a poetic approach to music rather than a purely vocal approach. It's a special kind of voice, which cannot be described simply as lyric or lyric coloratura. It's a special kind of sound with a certain purity, and I like to think that's what I have.''
Miss Raskin sang at the Chicago Lyric and other American opera houses and at Glyndebourne. She also appeared frequently with American orchestras, in oratorio and in recital. Recital Debut in 1964
She made her New York recital debut at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1964. Reviewing the concert for The New York Times, Howard Klein pointed out that not many opera singers could make the transition from the grand gestures of the operatic stage to the intimacy of song. ''But Miss Raskin,'' Mr. Klein said, ''brought to her program the finesse expected in this medium - fluent singing, pure tone, accurate scales, good musicianship, clear diction - and lost none of the keen ability to evoke character that has enlivened many of her operatic roles.''
In recent years, Miss Raskin's work was curtailed because of her illness. But she gave occasional concerts, and she started teaching at City College, the Manhattan School of Music and the Mannes College of Music.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Dr. Lisa A. Raskin, an associate professor of psychology at Amherst College, and a son, Dr. Jonathan M. Raskin, an internist in New York.

Miss Raskin sang at the Chicago Lyric and other American opera houses and at Glyndebourne. She also appeared frequently with American orchestras, in oratorio and in recital. Recital Debut in 1964
She made her New York recital debut at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1964. Reviewing the concert for The New York Times, Howard Klein pointed out that not many opera singers could make the transition from the grand gestures of the operatic stage to the intimacy of song. ''But Miss Raskin,'' Mr. Klein said, ''brought to her program the finesse expected in this medium - fluent singing, pure tone, accurate scales, good musicianship, clear diction - and lost none of the keen ability to evoke character that has enlivened many of her operatic roles.''
In recent years, Miss Raskin's work was curtailed because of her illness. But she gave occasional concerts, and she started teaching at City College, the Manhattan School of Music and the Mannes College of Music.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Dr. Lisa A. Raskin, an associate professor of psychology at Amherst College, and a son, Dr. Jonathan M. Raskin, an internist in New York.

JUDITH RASKIN, LYRIC SOPRANO ACCLAIMED FOR MUSICIANSHIP
Judith Raskin, the American lyric soprano famed for her voice and musicianship, died of cancer yesterday at Beth Israel Hospital. She was 56 years old and lived in New York City.
As a leading singer with the New York City Opera, and then at the Metropolitan Opera from 1962 to 1972, Miss Raskin was hailed as one of the finest artists of her time. She had a voice that critics constantly referred to as ''ravishing.'' Combined with the beauty of her sound was a high order of musicianship. In addition, Miss Raskin was a beautiful woman and an excellent actress. As a complete artist, she captivated audiences whenever she appeared.
Yet she was discovered later than most singers. Born in New York on June 21, 1928, she studied the piano and violin as a child. At Smith College she discovered the potential of her voice and started serious study, working with Anna Hamlin. She won the Marian Anderson Award in 1952 and 1953, and other awards followed. Soon she was making appearances around the country, but she did not achieve renown until 1957, when she sang in a televised performance of Poulenc's ''Dialogues des Carmelites.'' It was the American premiere of the opera.
During these years she was also busy raising a family. She had married Dr. Raymond A. Raskin, a psychiatrist, when she was 20 years old, and they had two children.
In 1959 she joined the New York City Opera Company, and in 1962 went to the Metropolitan Opera. 20 Operatic Roles
Miss Raskin sang about 20 operatic roles, ranging from Mozart through Stravinsky and Poulenc. Her Mozart was especially admired; she sang leading roles in ''Le Nozze di Figaro,'' ''Don Giovanni,'' ''Cos i Fan Tutte'' and ''Die Zauberfl"ote.'' She was also hailed for her performance as Nanetta in Verdi's ''Falstaff'' at the Metropolitan Opera. Many believed her to be the most attractive Adele in Strauss' ''Fledermaus'' within memory. Among her contemporary operas were Stravinsky's ''Rake's Progress,'' Moore's ''Ballad of Baby Doe'' in addition to ''Carmelites.''
Miss Raskin never tried to be merely a singer of high notes, though her range equaled that of any lyric soprano. Nor did she ever attempt to sing louder than some of the tenors with whom she worked. Instead she concentrated on purity of sound and line.
''I've tried to make up in depth what I don't have in quantity,'' she once told an interviewer. ''There is a kind of singer who has a poetic approach to music rather than a purely vocal approach. It's a special kind of voice, which cannot be described simply as lyric or lyric coloratura. It's a special kind of sound with a certain purity, and I like to think that's what I have.''
Miss Raskin sang at the Chicago Lyric and other American opera houses and at Glyndebourne. She also appeared frequently with American orchestras, in oratorio and in recital. Recital Debut in 1964
She made her New York recital debut at the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1964. Reviewing the concert for The New York Times, Howard Klein pointed out that not many opera singers could make the transition from the grand gestures of the operatic stage to the intimacy of song. ''But Miss Raskin,'' Mr. Klein said, ''brought to her program the finesse expected in this medium - fluent singing, pure tone, accurate scales, good musicianship, clear diction - and lost none of the keen ability to evoke character that has enlivened many of her operatic roles.''
In recent years, Miss Raskin's work was curtailed because of her illness. But she gave occasional concerts, and she started teaching at City College, the Manhattan School of Music and the Mannes College of Music.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Dr. Lisa A. Raskin, an associate professor of psychology at Amherst College, and a son, Dr. Jonathan M. Raskin, an internist in New York.

Judith Raskin
Judith Raskin (June 21, 1928 – December 21, 1984) was an American lyric soprano, renowned for her fine voice as well as her acting.
Raskin was born in New York to Harry A. Raskin, a high school music teacher, and Lillian Raskin, a grade school teacher. Her father aroused her childhood interest in music, leading her to study violin and piano, before she turned her focus to singing. In 1945, she graduated from Roosevelt High School, Yonkers and attended Smith College, where she majored in music. It was during her college years that she began taking singing lessons, which she continued after graduation in order to develop further the warmth and artistry of her voice.
In 1948, she married Dr. Raymond A. Raskin, with whom she had two children, Jonathon and Lisa.
Winning the Marian Anderson award in 1952 and 1953, Raskin started to perform in concerts throughout the United States. She secured national recognition in 1957 for her part in the televised American premiere of Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites. Her prominence continued to rise in July the same year when she starred in a concert version of Puccini's La bohème, with the Symphony of the Air in Central Park. Finally, in 1959, she joined the New York City Opera (NYCO), debuting in Mozart's Così fan tutte.
