Skirmish of Tongue
The Skirmish of Tongue was a battle that took place in March 1746 near Tongue in the Scottish Highlands during the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
Background
On 25 March 1746 a French ship named the Le Prince Charles, formerly HMS Hazard, which was carrying money and supplies for the Jacobite leader Charles Edward Stuart ran into the Kyle of Tongue while being pursued by the British frigate HMS Sheerness. During the night the crew and soldiers disembarked carrying the money, however the following day Captain George Mackay, son of the chief of the Clan Mackay, who supported the British government confronted them at a place named Drum Nan Coup and after a short fight Mackay captured the men and the money.

Aftermarth and significance
Historian Ruairi MacLeod gives details of what was done with the money captured from the Jacobites. Captain George Mackay, Sir Harry Munro, Lord Charles Gordon, John MacLeod, Lieutenant Reid, and Ensign MacLaggan all received £700 each of the captured booty. Ensign Aneas Mackay received £200. Lieutenant Daniel Forbes received £100. The sergeants each received £50 and the privates each got £7 or £8 which was the equivalent to eight or nine months pay.

Tongue
The tongue is a muscular hydrostat on the floor of the mouth of most vertebrates that manipulates food for mastication. It is the primary organ of taste (gustation), as much of its upper surface is covered in taste buds. The tongue's upper surface is also covered in numerous lingual papillae. It is sensitive and kept moist by saliva, and is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels. In humans a secondary function of the tongue is phonetic articulation. The tongue also serves as a natural means of cleaning the teeth. The ability to perceive different tastes is not localised in different parts of the tongue, as is widely believed. This error arose because of misinterpretation of some 19th-century research (see tongue map).
Structure
The tongue is a muscular structure that forms part of the floor of the oral cavity. The left and right sides of the tongue are separated by the lingual septum. The human tongue is divided into anterior and posterior parts. The anterior part is the visible part situated at the front and makes up roughly two-thirds the length of the tongue. The posterior part is the part closest to the throat, roughly one-third of its length. These parts differ in terms of their embryological development and nerve supply. The two parts of the tongue are divided by the terminal sulcus.

Tongue (Scottish Gaelic: Tunga from Old Norse Tunga) is a coastal village in northwest Highland, Scotland, in the western part of the former county of Sutherland. It lies on the east shore above the base of the Kyle of Tongue and north of the mountains Ben Hope and Ben Loyal. To the north lies the area of Braetongue.
Tongue is the main village in a series of crofting townships that runs through Coldbackie, Dalharn, Blandy, and the harbour of Scullomie to the deserted township of Slettel. The village includes a youth hostel, a craft shop, a general store and garage, a bank, a post office and two hotels, the Tongue Hotel and The Ben Loyal Hotel. It is connected to the west side of the Kyle by the Kyle of Tongue Bridge and Causeway, built in 1971.
Toponymy
Contrary to popular belief, the name Tongue does not refer to the shape of the Kyle of Tongue (though the kyle can be described as "tongue-shaped"). Rather it is a geographical term in Old Norse which refers to a piece of land shaped like a spit or tongue. That tongue of land projecting into the Kyle is the terminal moraine of the Kyle of Tongue glacier, and forms the eastern part of the Kyle of Tongue causeway.

However, the voyage to Scotland was not without its challenges. The ship experienced trouble soon after leaving Dunkirk and was forced ashore by English privateers on the coast of Belgium. It suffered damage, but not enough to stop Captain Talbot from continuing the voyage to Scotland. The plan was to disembark at Portsoy, a harbour town located about 50 miles from Aberdeen, but it soon became clear that Le Prince Charles Stuart was being chased by four Government ships.
Desperate and acknowledging his lack of knowledge of the area, Talbot took aboard two local fishermen to help him escape the enemy. One of the Government ships, the 24-gunned HMS Sheerness, broke off from the others and began tailing Talbot. Eventually, Talbot sailed into the Kyle of Tongue, a narrow sea inlet in the Scottish Highlands, where he hoped that the larger Sheerness would not be able to fully enter. However, he ended up beaching his ship on a sandbank, trapping it as the Sheerness was still close enough to shoot.
After several hours of continual shots being fired between the two ships, Talbot gave the orders to unload the goods. The plan was now for the crew to carry the gold and supplies to Prince Charles' base in Inverness. As daylight broke, the men began their trek to Inverness, but the captain of the Sheerness had by this point realised that Le Prince was what had been known as HMS Hazard, and sent out a group to look for Government supporters to help capture the Jacobite soldiers.
Before long, the Jacobites were surrounded by Government men and, after several deaths and the arrival of further opposition headed by Captain George Mackay, the Jacobites surrendered. However, they reportedly threw the gold into the water before being captured. The surviving Le Prince men were imprisoned aboard the Sheerness, preventing them from being able to fight at the Battle of Culloden.
The Skirmish of Tongue had a significant impact on the Jacobite cause. The gold and soldiers of Le Prince Charles Stuart could have made a significant difference if they had arrived in time for the Battle of Culloden. Charles would have had the money to properly feed, equip and pay the troops he already had, as well as hire new ones. As the government troops approached the bridge, they were met by Major Donald MacDonald of Tir nan dris and his band of 11 men and 1 piper, all of the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch. These Jacobites, armed with swords and muskets, were ready to meet the approaching enemy. It is said that by using the now-demolished High Bridge Inn as cover, the Jacobites deceived Captain Scott into thinking they were of a larger number. Captain Scott halted his men and sent forward a sergeant and servant to negotiate but both were taken prisoner. Scott then ordered his men to retreat and they began marching back the way they came. As they did so, they were fired on from both sides of the road. Captain Scott's men returned fire but he and his men were forced to change direction and move off the road.
The Jacobites continued to pursue Captain Scott and his men, and they eventually found themselves completely surrounded on all sides by the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch and the Clan MacDonnell of Glengarry. MacDonald of Keppoch advanced alone to Scott's party, required them to surrender, and offered them quarters. However, he also made it clear that if they resisted, they would be cut to pieces. Fatigued with a long march, and surrounded on all sides by increasing bodies of Jacobites, Captain Scott, who had been wounded, and with two of his men killed, accepted the terms offered, and surrendered. Soon after Donald Cameron of Lochiel arrived and took charge of the prisoners, whom he carried to his own house at Achnacarry.
This incident marked the commencement of the 1745 Jacobite uprising against the Hanoverian crown. The High Bridge itself was later superseded by a new bridge in 1819, and collapsed in 1913. The Highbridge Skirmish may have been small in scale, but it was significant in that it marked the start of a rebellion that would have a lasting impact on Scottish and British history.

Captain Robert Stewart, who was leading the Jacobite forces, was severely wounded by a musket ball through both of his shoulders. Major Glasgow, who was also on the Jacobite side, requested that Captain Stewart send a party of men to the kirk as he feared they were going to be overpowered in the streets. Captain Stewart complied and was able to take all of the enemy prisoners.
The Jacobite forces, however, were aware that the Duke of Cumberland had 700 horse lodged in the vicinity and feared they would be attacked. Captain Stewart rode at the rear of the prisoners to prevent them from falling into enemy hands as they were carried over the bridge to Spey.
When the smoke cleared, the skirmish resulted in 9 deaths and many injuries on the government side, and 1 death and many injuries on the Jacobite side. Additionally, around 80 prisoners were taken by the Jacobites.

Captain Robert Stewart, who was leading the Jacobite forces, was severely wounded by a musket ball through both of his shoulders. Major Glasgow, who was also on the Jacobite side, requested that Captain Stewart send a party of men to the kirk as he feared they were going to be overpowered in the streets. Captain Stewart complied and was able to take all of the enemy prisoners.
The Jacobite forces, however, were aware that the Duke of Cumberland had 700 horse lodged in the vicinity and feared they would be attacked. Captain Stewart rode at the rear of the prisoners to prevent them from falling into enemy hands as they were carried over the bridge to Spey.
When the smoke cleared, the skirmish resulted in 9 deaths and many injuries on the government side, and 1 death and many injuries on the Jacobite side. Additionally, around 80 prisoners were taken by the Jacobites.

The Skirmish of Tongue, also known as the Capture of Le Prince Charles Stuart, was a significant event that took place in the lead up to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. The incident involved a group of Jacobites, who were supporters of Charles Edward Stuart and his claim to the British throne, and their ship, Le Prince Charles Stuart. The ship had been stolen by Jacobites a few months earlier in Montrose and renamed, before being sent to Scotland by Louis XV of France filled with around 160 French, Spanish, Irish and Scottish men, along with £13,000 in gold (equivalent to around £1.5 million today).
However, the voyage to Scotland was not without its challenges. The ship experienced trouble soon after leaving Dunkirk and was forced ashore by English privateers on the coast of Belgium. It suffered damage, but not enough to stop Captain Talbot from continuing the voyage to Scotland. The plan was to disembark at Portsoy, a harbour town located about 50 miles from Aberdeen, but it soon became clear that Le Prince Charles Stuart was being chased by four Government ships.
Desperate and acknowledging his lack of knowledge of the area, Talbot took aboard two local fishermen to help him escape the enemy. One of the Government ships, the 24-gunned HMS Sheerness, broke off from the others and began tailing Talbot. Eventually, Talbot sailed into the Kyle of Tongue, a narrow sea inlet in the Scottish Highlands, where he hoped that the larger Sheerness would not be able to fully enter. However, he ended up beaching his ship on a sandbank, trapping it as the Sheerness was still close enough to shoot.
After several hours of continual shots being fired between the two ships, Talbot gave the orders to unload the goods. The plan was now for the crew to carry the gold and supplies to Prince Charles' base in Inverness. As daylight broke, the men began their trek to Inverness, but the captain of the Sheerness had by this point realised that Le Prince was what had been known as HMS Hazard, and sent out a group to look for Government supporters to help capture the Jacobite soldiers.
Before long, the Jacobites were surrounded by Government men and, after several deaths and the arrival of further opposition headed by Captain George Mackay, the Jacobites surrendered. However, they reportedly threw the gold into the water before being captured. The surviving Le Prince men were imprisoned aboard the Sheerness, preventing them from being able to fight at the Battle of Culloden.
The Skirmish of Tongue had a significant impact on the Jacobite cause. The gold and soldiers of Le Prince Charles Stuart could have made a significant difference if they had arrived in time for the Battle of Culloden. Charles would have had the money to properly feed, equip and pay the troops he already had, as well as hire new ones. Additionally, it would have been a morale boost for the Jacobites to feel that they had such support and that the confidence of the leader they had been following was not unfounded.
Furthermore, the capture of Le Prince Charles Stuart and the subsequent imprisonment of its crew was a major blow to the Jacobite cause. It prevented them from being able to fight at the Battle of Culloden, which ultimately ended in defeat for the Jacobites. The ship was later recovered and renamed HMS Hazard, before being put back into the Government navy.
The Skirmish of Tongue is an interesting event in the history of the Jacobite rebellion. It highlights the challenges and setbacks that the Jacobites faced in their attempts to overthrow the British Government and restore the Stuart monarchy.

On August 16th, 1745, history was made as the Jacobite Rising of 1745 officially began with the Highbridge Skirmish. This engagement between government troops and Jacobites loyal to Prince Charles Edward Stuart took place at Highbridge, Lochaber, on the River Spean, and marked the start of hostilities between the two sides.
The background of the skirmish starts with Prince Charles, who had just landed in Scotland, meeting with supporters such as Donald Cameron of Lochiel and the Chief of the Clan MacDonald of Clanranald. As the Jacobites were gathering their forces, the Hanoverian governor of Fort Augustus dispatched two companies of the Second Battalion of the Royal Scots regiment under the command of a Captain (later General) Scott. These troops were sent to reinforce the government garrison at Fort William.
As the government troops, numbering around 85 men, marched along the road that linked the two forts, they encountered no resistance until they reached High Bridge over the River Spean. The bridge, which had been completed by General Wade less than ten years previously, was part of a network of military roads designed to facilitate troop movements across the Highlands.
As the government troops approached the bridge, they were met by Major Donald MacDonald of Tir nan dris and his band of 11 men and 1 piper, all of the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch. These Jacobites, armed with swords and muskets, were ready to meet the approaching enemy. It is said that by using the now-demolished High Bridge Inn as cover, the Jacobites deceived Captain Scott into thinking they were of a larger number. Captain Scott halted his men and sent forward a sergeant and servant to negotiate but both were taken prisoner. Scott then ordered his men to retreat and they began marching back the way they came. As they did so, they were fired on from both sides of the road. Captain Scott's men returned fire but he and his men were forced to change direction and move off the road.
The Jacobites continued to pursue Captain Scott and his men, and they eventually found themselves completely surrounded on all sides by the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch and the Clan MacDonnell of Glengarry. MacDonald of Keppoch advanced alone to Scott's party, required them to surrender, and offered them quarters. However, he also made it clear that if they resisted, they would be cut to pieces. Fatigued with a long march, and surrounded on all sides by increasing bodies of Jacobites, Captain Scott, who had been wounded, and with two of his men killed, accepted the terms offered, and surrendered. Soon after Donald Cameron of Lochiel arrived and took charge of the prisoners, whom he carried to his own house at Achnacarry.
This incident marked the commencement of the 1745 Jacobite uprising against the Hanoverian crown. The High Bridge itself was later superseded by a new bridge in 1819, and collapsed in 1913. The Highbridge Skirmish may have been small in scale, but it was significant in that it marked the start of a rebellion that would have a lasting impact on Scottish and British history.

On March 20, 1746, a little-known but significant conflict took place in the small town of Keith, Moray, Scotland. Known as the Skirmish of Keith, this battle was part of the Jacobite rising of 1745, a failed attempt to restore the Stuart monarchy to the thrones of Scotland and England.
The background of the skirmish begins with Captain Alexander Campbell and his troops, who were loyal to the British-Hanoverian government and Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, entering the town of Keith. At the same time, a detachment of Jacobite supporters, led by Lord John Drummond, were at Spey and heard rumors that the Duke of Cumberland's army was on its way. Lord Drummond ordered his men to march and take up positions for battle, and they were joined by additional men from Roy Stewart's and Lord Elcho's units. The Jacobite force numbered around 900-1000 men.
As the battle began, the French hussars, who were fighting on the side of the Jacobites, gave the signal to attack with the cry of "God save Prince Charles". The action continued for about half an hour, with the Campbells firing heavily from the windows of the local kirk. Skirmish of Tongue
The Skirmish of Tongue was a battle that took place in March 1746 near Tongue in the Scottish Highlands during the Jacobite Rising of 1745.
Background
On 25 March 1746 a French ship named the Le Prince Charles, formerly HMS Hazard, which was carrying money and supplies for the Jacobite leader Charles Edward Stuart ran into the Kyle of Tongue while being pursued by the British frigate HMS Sheerness. During the night the crew and soldiers disembarked carrying the money, however the following day Captain George Mackay, son of the chief of the Clan Mackay, who supported the British government confronted them at a place named Drum Nan Coup and after a short fight Mackay captured the men and the money.

An account of the fight was reported in the London Gazette of 15 April 1746:
Aftermarth and significance
Historian Ruairi MacLeod gives details of what was done with the money captured from the Jacobites. Captain George Mackay, Sir Harry Munro, Lord Charles Gordon, John MacLeod, Lieutenant Reid, and Ensign MacLaggan all received £700 each of the captured booty. Ensign Aneas Mackay received £200. Lieutenant Daniel Forbes received £100. The sergeants each received £50 and the privates each got £7 or £8 which was the equivalent to eight or nine months pay.
