Mastication or chewing is the process by which food is crushed and ground by teeth. It is the first step of digestion, and it increases the surface area of foods to allow more efficient break down by enzymes. During the mastication process, the food is positioned by the cheek and tongue between the teeth for grinding. The muscles of mastication move the jaws to bring the teeth into intermittent contact, repeatedly occluding and opening. As chewing continues, the food is made softer and warmer, and the enzymes in saliva begin to break down carbohydrates in the food. After chewing, the food (now called a bolus) is swallowed. It enters the esophagus and via peristalsis continues on to the stomach, where the next step of digestion occurs.
Premastication is sometimes performed by human parents for infants who are unable to do so for themselves. The food is masticated in the mouth of the parent into a bolus and then transferred to the infant for consumption. (Some other animals also premasticate.)

There are four muscles of mastication: The masseter, temporalis, lateral pterygoid and medial pterygoid.
First we will indicate the masseter muscle. This muscle has two heads which are inserting on angle and lateral surface of ramus of mandible, and also on the lateral surface of coronoid process. The deep head is much smaller, and arises from the posterior third of the lower border of the zygomatic arch. The superficial head arises from the temporal process of the zygomatic bone, and from the anterior two-thirds of the inferior border of the zygomatic arch.
On the next diagram we will draw the temporalis muscle which arises from the temp...

Mastication is the process of grinding and chewing food into smaller pieces in the oral cavity turning it into a food bolus. This mass can then be swallowed with ease and further digested as it passes along the alimentary canal.
Apart from the teeth and the tongue, certain muscles known as the masticatory muscles partake in specific movements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during this process to allow the initial stages of digestion to occur. All muscles of mastication are supplied by branches of the mandibular nerve (V3), a branch of the trigeminal nerve.
Examples of the masticatory muscles include:
- Temporalis muscle
- Medial pterygoid muscle
- Lateral pterygoid muscle
- Buccinator muscle
- Masseter muscle

First we will indicate the masseter muscle. This muscle has two heads which are inserting on angle and lateral surface of ramus of mandible, and also on the lateral surface of coronoid process. The deep head is much smaller, and arises from the posterior third of the lower border of the zygomatic arch. The superficial head arises from the temporal process of the zygomatic bone, and from the anterior two-thirds of the inferior border of the zygomatic arch.
On the next diagram we will draw the temporalis muscle which arises from the temporal fossa and the deep part of temporal fascia which covers this muscle. It passes medial to the zygomatic arch and forms a tendon which inserts onto the coronoid process of the mandible, with its insertion extending into the retromolar fossa posterior to the last mandibular molar. Some authors are considering the most anterior set of fibers of the temporalis as a distinct muscle called the sphenomandibular muscle.
On the last diagram we will discuss about the two pterygoid muscles.
The medial pterygoid muscle has two heads. The deep head arises from the medial surface of the lateral pterygoid plate while the superficial head arises from the maxillary tuberosity and pyramidal process of palatine bone. Both heads have a common insertion into a roughened area
on the posteroinferior part of the medial surface and angle of ramus of mandible.
The last muscle to be indicated is the lateral pterygoid muscle. This muscle has also two heads. The upper head arises from the infratemporal surface and crest of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone and inserts onto the articular disc and fibrous capsule of the temporomandibular joint. The lower head arises from the lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate of the sphenoid bone and inserts onto the pterygoid fovea which is a concave surface on the medial side of the neck of the condyloid process of the mandible.
All of the four masticatory muscles are supplied by the anterior division of the mandibular nerve.

Mastication or chewing is the process by which food is crushed and ground by teeth. It is the first step of digestion, and it increases the surface area of foods to allow more efficient break down by enzymes.
Part of a project for a new weight loss drug, this animation was used for basic educational purposes about the digestion process so that the mechanism of action of the drug could be understood in context.

The end of the human race He makes your life so waste The masticator has arrived Now some people shall die Your mind has turned to sorrow Your veins are filled with horror No-one is left behind Now, let's see some grind (Repeat line 1) Now, it seems complete No-one left to care He has erased the weak And live if you dare
