Although miners were originally lured to the general area by the promise of gold, the primary metals mined in the valley were silver, zinc, and lead. The total quantities produced are impressive: over a billion ounces of silver, 3 million tons of zinc, and 8 million tons of lead, totalling over $6 billion in value, ranking the valley among the top ten mining districts in world history. During the 1970s, nearly half of the nation's silver production came from the Silver Valley.
Idaho is a mountainous state with an area larger than that of all of New England. It borders the US states of Montana to the northeast, Wyoming to the east, Nevada and Utah to the south, and Washington and Oregon to the west. To the north, it shares a 45mi (72km) international border with the Canadian province of British Columbia, the shortest such land border of any state. The network of dams and locks on the Columbia River and Snake River make the city of Lewiston the farthest inland seaport on the Pacific coast of the contiguous United States.
Idaho's nickname is the "Gem State", because nearly every known type of gemstone has been found there. In addition, Idaho is one of only two places in the world where star garnets can be found in any significant quantities, the other being India. Idaho is sometimes called the "Potato State" owing to its popular and widely distributed crop. The state motto is Esto Perpetua (Latin for "Let it be forever" or "Let it endure forever").
Fires is the second album by London-born singer-songwriter Nerina Pallot. First released in April 2005 on her own independent record label, Idaho Records, Fires was met with much critical acclaim but did not gain commercial recognition.
After working as a support act for artists such as Sheryl Crow and Suzanne Vega, Pallot was signed up to 14th Floor Records, who were impressed with the audience response and after-show sales of her album. Thus, Fires was reissued in late April 2006 with revamped artwork and some slight remixes on some of Pallot's songs. The album entered at UK #41 and later, on the strength of the popular single "Everybody's Gone to War", made it as far as #21.
To date, the album has been certified gold in the UK for sales of over 100,000, and has earned Pallot a nomination at the 2007 BRIT Awards for Best British Female. As of 4 October 2009, the album has sold 138,563 copies in the UK.

Are Coeur d'Alene home prices out of your budget? The Silver Valley, located just east of CDA, offers a more affordable alternative. In this video, I dive into what makes the Silver Valley a great choice for homebuyers, including its rich mining history, town profiles, and current real estate market. Learn about the average home prices—$299,000—and the median for vacant lots, which is only $95,000. I also cover the local schools, amenities like Walmart and Silver Mountain Resort, and some cons, including environmental concerns due to past mining. If you’re considering a move to North Idaho but want to avoid Coeur d'Alene’s high prices, the Silver Valley might just be your perfect fit.

Background Info:
In the 1800s gold and silver rushes were common across the US and even into Canadas Arctic. We saw the classic California Gold Rush, Nevada Gold Rushes, and small rushes for gold and similar minerals in the Arizona desert to the Yukon Gold Rush in the formidable Arctic! People carried their goods over challenging mountain passes for rushes that ended in a season or two. But they also had phases where they’d go after the gold and only later realize there was something else valuable at the same locality or perhaps a new method of extraction. So, over the years these places saw mini rushes for gold, silver, then lead, and useful byproducts needed for processing the ore, like mercury, and metals for wars and infrastructure, like lead and cobalt, and other elements needed like uranium and sulfur. In the case of the Coeur dAlene Mining District, silver and lead became the two prominently sought-after ores. Galena was mined along with related ore bodies that seemed abundant there. But the long history of extensive mining in north Idaho also carried a toxic legacy. It was only decades later that the EPA set up the Superfund program that designated many regions like this across the US as toxic dumping grounds for chemical companies and mine tailing piles. The trouble for these mines didn’t stop at union miner protests, lack of profits after expenses, and accidental explosions, it remained into today as a now polluted Lake Coeur dAlene and surrounding watershed and lead poisoning in local childrens bloodstreams. Here’s the story. For more mining information, abandoned mine tours, learning about minerals, rocks, crystals, and geology, join me here @LetsGoGeo ! See you on the next adventure.
