Another of my favourite artists of 2013. This cover of the Betty Wright mid 70's hit is from Joan Osborne's Grammy nominated 2012 CD 'Bring it on home'.
I have been a big Joan Osborne fan since her breakthrough hit "One of Us" more than a decade and a half ago. I have chased down all her subsequent albums and singles from soundtracks, collaborations and compilations. Joan is one of the most versatile and prolific singers on the planet. Her ability to shine in any genre she chooses & she has traveled quite a gamut during her career, has made her one of my all time favorite artists.

BETTY WRIGHT v PHOEBE SNOW v JOAN OSBORNE Shoorah! Shoorah!
A triple header for you on this post! Spelt different ways for the panoply of recording artists who have memorialised this great song, I have selected three very different takes on it. 'Shoorah! Shoorah!' or 'Shoo-Rah Shoo-Rah' was penned by Allen Toussaint who was New Orleans royalty as a writer, musician and producer. It was first recorded by Frankie Miller in 1974; but I've kept it female focused here and the first version in my upload is from the late great Betty Wright in that same year. Betty was best known for her 1972 hit 'Clean Up Woman' and for being the guest vocalist on Peter Brown's smash hit 'Dance With Me' in 1978. 'Shoorah! Shoorah! in Betty's hands is a great soul/funk joint but interestingly it was a bigger hit in Britain than it was in America. With a near 50 year car...

'Bring it on home' was much anticipated by her fans and it is a wonderful collection of blues, pop, traditional rhythm and blues; each track with the inimitable stamp of the vocalist sublime.
'Shoorah Shoorah' is probably the catchiest and upbeat selection on the CD. After 18 months of playing I still love this track. Once the chorus gets inside your head, it is virtually impossible to get it out! It gives me great joy to wax lyrical about the one and only Joan Osborne. More to come.

With a near 50 year career in R&B and Soul, Betty was a much loved session singer as well as a recording artist in her own right. Betty Wright died in 2020 at just 66 years young. I will post a link in the comments section to a clip for that disco classic that Betty lent her powerful voice to.
The freakily talented Phoebe Snow also recorded Allen's song, in 1980 for her 1981 issued 'Rock Away' long player. On her opus, the song is listed as 'Shoo-Rah Shoo-Rah' as it was on Frankie Miller's version of it. Phoebe came to prominence in the mid 70's thanks to her wonderful hit 'Poetry Man' but for me , it was her cover of the Paul McCartney song 'Every Night' that won me over. I still listen to her recording in wonder, some 44 years on, and I never tire of it. I will post a link to it in my comments section. Phoebe had a patchy output, in part, life circumstances and health matters taking their toll and this amazing woman from being the household name she dearly deserved to be. I was delighted to have her 1989 LP 'Something Real' in my collection and over the years I have hunted high and low for other recordings by this brilliant vocalist. Sadly Phoebe Snow left the world too soon, as well, at just 60 in 2011.
This being my weekend of posting numerous clips featuring the inimitable Joan Osborne, her version of 'Shoorah! Shoorah! ends this trio of great vocalists. Appearing on Joan's 2012 album 'Bring It On Home', a set filled with covers of blues and R&B compositions it was a stand out on that album. As I have waxed lyrical before about this incredible singer, she has shown the utmost versatility and dexterity in her choices and is a true artist, oozing musicality on any and every track she tackles. Of her dozen albums so far, I think 'Bring It On Home' is my favourite, duet to its cohesive and vibey group of songs produced and performed with her requisite power and control.
Betty Wright brings soul and funk to 'Shoorah! Shoorah!'; while Phoebe unleashes that big, big textured voice with a more pop/rock feel while Joan imbues it with; well Joan Osborne! No big surprise to regular visitors to my channel as to which version I favour!........Allen Toussaint, the composer, was an exemplary musician who explored R&B, Blues, Jazz, Funk and Soul in his more than 60 years in the industry. Two of his famous creations - 'Yes We Can Can' was recorded by The Pointer Sisters, and a little know track called 'Lady Marmalade' that he didn't write but produced for Labelle, and we know how that turned out....
I love delving into pop culture and songs and singers and the writers and producers that made them happen. I hope all who see and hear this triple whammy of 'Shoorah' get their funk on and have a good groove to at least one of the versions on display here.

Fairfax, VA (December 20, 2011) --- Joan Osborne recalls how "Blues music rescued me when I was in need of rescue."
On her newest album, Bring it on Home, Joan returns the favor and it's the blues that gets new life. Drawing from a voice the New York Times called "angelic ecstasy and sexual abandon," Joan Osborne has at long last made an album of vintage blues, R&B and soul songs. Bring it on Home will be released on March 27th (Saguaro Road Records).
A collection of some of her favorite classic songs, Bring it on Home is Osborne's tribute to the music she has long loved and drew inspiration from. "I knew that, someday, when the time was right and my voice was ready," Osborne says, "I wanted to make a recording like the one you're holding now." With vocals that growl and soar, Osborne alternately cries out with heart-wrenching soul and foot-stomping grooves.
"The voices of Otis Redding and Al Green soothed a troubled soul, the power of Etta James and Tina Turner gave me courage, and the depth of feeling of Muddy Waters and so many other great blues artists allowed me to find and express my own depths," explains Osborne. "When I began to sing in New York City in my early 20's, I wanted nothing more than to model myself on these people, to inhabit the music as they did in some small way."
She personally selected the obscure gem "Roll Like A Big Wheel" from her own record collection and added rock n' roll-fueled urgency to it. She also dug deep into John Mayall's work and came back with "Broken Wings," where her vocal performance draws both goosebumps and tears. The often overlooked Ike Turner-penned "Game of Love" was another treasure Osborne chose to record, and during the sessions an impromptu rendition of "Shake Your Hips" made its way onto the album. "Shake Your Hips" is the lead track off of Bring it on Home and will be shipped to radio stations in January for airplay.
Bring it on Home also includes tracks originally made famous by American blues masters such as Sonny Boy Williamson ("Bring it on Home"), Muddy Waters ("I Want to Be Loved"), as well as recordings originally released by some of the greatest R&B singers ever including Ray Charles ("I Don't Need No Doctor"), Al Green ("Rhymes") and Otis Redding ("Champagne and Wine").
Bring it on Home was produced by Joan and her longtime music director/guitarist Jack Petruzzelli. It was recorded live in the Waterfront Studios in Hudson, NY by engineer Henry Hirsch (Lenny Kravitz), who used an original 24 track Studer tape machine to recreate the warm and organic analogue sound of the era. Guest musicians include Barbecue Bob Pomeroy (harmonica), Allen Toussaint (piano on his own "Shoorah! Shoorah!") and vocalists the Holmes Brothers and Rufus Thomas' daughter, Vaneese Thomas. Jimmy Vivino, Conan O'Brien Show Band musical director, assembled all horn arrangements and also played electric piano on "I Don't Need no Doctor."
Joan Osborne has sold millions of albums and garnered multiple Grammy nominations throughout her critically and commercially acclaimed career. In addition to her own headlining tours, she has sung lead vocals for The Dead (formerly the Grateful Dead) and was featured in the award-winning film Standing In The Shadows of Motown.
