Syrians make up the largest group of foreign doctors in Germany. Around 6,000 now live and work here after fleeing the civil war in their homeland. Now after the fall of the Assad regime, the German government wants Syrian doctors to stay, saying their work has become indispensible for the health care system.

He will be actively working against big food companies, big chemical companies, and big pharma, so naturally, he’s getting a lot of pushback. The U. S. spends over 4.1 trillion dollars each year on healthcare, yet we’re at the bottom as far as health. Why?
Here's what I think can improve America’s health!
1. Change the institutional foods
Prepackaged foods are given to people in nursing homes, prisons, schools, hospitals, and other public institutions. These institutional foods are very low-quality, highly processed foods. The health of the people in these institutions would quickly improve by simply removing the refined sugars, starches, and oils from their diets.
2. Address the subsidized foods
Subsidized foods are paid for by taxpayers. Corn, soy, wheat, sugar, and rice are the most highly subsidized foods. Changing the types of foods that are subsidized and investing in small farmers can significantly improve this problem.
3. Changing GRAS
“Generally recognized as safe” is a term used by the FDA for products that have been safety tested by their own manufacturers. To avoid conflict of interest, these tests should be conducted by third-party independent companies.
4. Change food fortification
Synthetic folic acid and iron fortification of food can cause serious problems for many people.
5. Disallow tax dollars from being used for drugs
Every year, 40 billion dollars of taxpayer money is used to pay for medical research to develop new drugs.
6. The rounding rule
If a product contains less than .5 grams of an ingredient, it can be rounded down to 0. This is misleading and should be eliminated. People need to be more aware of what's really in their food. Companies also need to be forced to raise the quality of the ingredients in their products.
7. End sun phobia
Sun phobia paired with low RDAs for vitamin D is contributing to massive vitamin D deficiency in the population, putting people at risk for disease.

Despite what many think, research has shown that exposure to the violence in video games does not increase violent behavior.

In March 2022, the Australia government announced $350 million of funding over 4 years to employ on-site pharmacists in residential aged care, starting July 2023. In April 2023, the government made changes to the proposed on-site pharmacists, where the new program will now be delivered by and through community pharmacies. Regardless of how the model will be implemented, the goal remains the same - to improve quality use of medicines and medicines safety for aged care residents.
While it is relatively easy for pharmacists to monitor and manage some types of medicine harms (e.g., due to use of inappropriate medicines), many medicines can cause “milder” harms (e.g., poor balance, sedation) that are difficult to detect without the right tools. In April 2023, the government made changes to the proposed on-site pharmacists, where the new program will now be delivered by and through community pharmacies. Regardless of how the model will be implemented, the goal remains the same - to improve quality use of medicines and medicines safety for aged care residents.
While it is relatively easy for pharmacists to monitor and manage some types of medicine harms (e.g., due to use of inappropriate medicines), many medicines can cause “milder” harms (e.g., poor balance, sedation) that are difficult to detect without the right tools. Left unmanaged, these “milder” harms can lead to serious adverse events such as injurious falls, according to Pharmacist Julian Soriano talking to Australian Health Journal.
In a joint project between UniSA, Tanunda Luteran Home, Flinders University and UNSW, a digital solution has been used to create an evidence-based, medicines use model to assist pharmacists (on-site aged care or community pharmacists) with actively monitoring medicine harms.
An interdisciplinary team at the University of South Australia (UniSA), University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Flinders University is currently implementing the TeleClinical Care (TCC) platform incorporating data from a suite of digital technologies to enable pharmacist at the Tanunda Lutheran Home (where Julian Soriano works) to actively monitor their aged care residents.
The ARIIRA funded project is being conducted in two phases:
i) Phase 1 involves developing protocol to extract data from digital technologies (e.g. activity trackers, sleep tracking mats) into the TCC platform. The core of the existing TCC platform is a dashboard that includes longitudinal visualisations of changes in residents’ health and well-being over time. Other existing data sources collected in residential aged care will be uploaded to the dashboard, including medicine use (e.g. medicine changes, sedative load), clinical care record (e.g. bowel movement) and adverse events (e.g. falls, hospital admission).
ii) Phase 2 involves a pre-post implementation study over 12-weeks, with 30 residents recruited from the Tanunda Lutheran Home. The selected digital technologies will first be installed for all enrolled residents who provided written consent. Enrolled residents will also be asked to use an activity tracker. Prior to service provision, two weeks’ baseline data will be collected from the digital technologies; the data will serve as reference point for future changes. Pharmacists will monitor all participants using the centralised TCC dashboard.
As Soriano states, “A platform like this is going to make that job much more streamlined. And the use of sensors such as a sleep tracker and activity tracker is also going to help provide the pharmacist with more information to be able to make more informed decisions, more informed recommendations for residents, their families and their treating GPs.”
The current workforce challenges in aged care are not forgotten and Soriano expresses hope, that “this platform won't increase the burden on residents and the staff there in terms of gathering this information. Hopefully this will be quite streamlined and automatic and there won't be a real big service change for the already overworked nurses and residents living in aged care would just be able to live and not have to worry constantly about being poked and prodded.”

The core of the existing TCC platform is a dashboard that includes longitudinal visualisations of changes in residents’ health and well-being over time. Other existing data sources collected in residential aged care will be uploaded to the dashboard, including medicine use (e.g. medicine changes, sedative load), clinical care record (e.g. bowel movement) and adverse events (e.g. falls, hospital admission).
ii) Phase 2 involves a pre-post implementation study over 12-weeks, with 30 residents recruited from the Tanunda Lutheran Home. The selected digital technologies will first be installed for all enrolled residents who provided written consent. Enrolled residents will also be asked to use an activity tracker. Prior to service provision, two weeks’ baseline data will be collected from the digital technologies; the data will serve as reference point for future changes. Pharmacists will monitor all participants using the centralised TCC dashboard.
As Soriano states, “A platform like this is going to make that job much more streamlined. And the use of sensors such as a sleep tracker and activity tracker is also going to help provide the pharmacist with more information to be able to make more informed decisions, more informed recommendations for residents, their families and their treating GPs.”
The current workforce challenges in aged care are not forgotten and Soriano expresses hope, that “this platform won't increase the burden on residents and the staff there in terms of gathering this information. Hopefully this will be quite streamlined and automatic and there won't be a real big service change for the already overworked nurses and residents living in aged care would just be able to live and not have to worry constantly about being poked and prodded.”

In this episode I’m going to teach you another way to process emotions. It’s something you can do on your own, and it’s a powerful way to work through the jumble of thoughts and emotions that are all up in your brain. Today you’re going to learn how to journal for depression and anxiety.
There are many ways to work through emotions with writing- a brain dump, a locus of control activity, and many more ways to write about your emotions.
Journaling is really simple; you just write about what you’re feeling or thinking or experiencing. Journaling can help you track your moods or identify triggering situations. It can help decrease anxiety and stress, and it can also help you gain a clearer perspective on your challenges.
Journaling has been shown to help your physical health too. It can lower blood pressure, help your immune system, and improve liver function.2 Writing can help you get to know yourself better and improve your relationships. Journaling has been shown to improve mood and fight depression.
