Saint Seraphim of Sarov (Russian:Серафим Саровский) (1 August[O.S. 19 July]1754 (or 1759) – 14 January[O.S. 2 January]1833), born Prokhor Moshnin (Прохор Мошнин), is one of the most renowned Russian monks and mystics in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is generally considered the greatest of the 19th century startsy (elders). Seraphim extended the monastic teachings of contemplation, theoria and self-denial to the layperson. He taught that the purpose of the Christian life was to acquire the Holy Spirit. Perhaps his most popular quotation amongst Orthodox believers is "Acquire a peaceful spirit, and thousands around you will be saved."
Sarov (Russian:Саро́в) is a closedtown in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia. It was known as Arzamas-16 (Арзама́с-16) from 1946 to 1991. Until 1995, it was known as Kremlyov (Кремлёв). The town is closed as it is the Russian center for nuclear research. Population: 92,047(2010 Census);87,652(2002 Census).
History
The history of the town can be divided into two different periods. In the earlier history of Russia it was known as one of the holy places of the Russian Orthodox Church, because of its monastery, that gave Russia one of its greatest saints, St.Seraphim. Since the 1940s, it has gradually become the center for research and production of Soviet and later Russian nuclear weapons.
The history of human settlement in the area around Sarov goes back at least to the 12th–13th centuries, when a large Mordvin settlement was founded on its spot. In 1298, the town was taken over by Tatars.
The modern town took its name from being the site of the Sarov Monastery next to the Sarov River. In 1664, an Orthodox monk Theodosius first settled on the Sarov hill. The first Church of Sarov tenement was founded in 1706. Saint Seraphim was living in Sarov from 1778 to 1833. In 1903, the monastery was visited by TsarNicholasII and other members of the royal family. At that time the monastery had nine churches, including one underground. Around 320monks lived in the monastery.
A Brief History of: The Sarov Criticality (Documentary)
Learn while you're at home with Plainly Difficult!
Criticality accidents are a technician's worst nightmare, although a rare occurrence they do happen and can result in severe radiological exposure and an expensive clean up process.
An event would unfold in Sarov in the Russian federation in 1997 and would have some similarities to 2 of the most infamous criticality accidents, those being the deaths linked to the Demon Core.
Although not identical, the accidental prompt criticality of some fissile material due to accidental dropping of a reflector does sound familiar to Louis Slotins' exposure.
The horror of a Criticality accident is fascinating.
The accident would result in a dead experienced technician and a 6 and a half day excursion.

The Great Ascetics - Saint Seraphim of Sarov
As if asceticism is not an extreme enough concept, in Eastern Orthodoxy we celebrate and commemorate those known as the "great" ascetics. Asceticism in Orthodoxy is not so much focused on the self denial of worldly pleasures and comforts but rather is focused on the acquisition of the unfathomable greatness of God's truth and love. So ironically it is about receiving rather than denying. Also it may seem to us at times to be an unrealisable feat yet many have walked the road and succeeded, exactly not in their own human capacity but rather in God's great mercy. It is a sacrifice to be sure and perhaps the greatest of human endeavours, but again, ironically, not because we are great but rather that God is. The Great Ascetics are therefore the greatest human stories told because they represe...

Closed city on the border of the Nizhny Novgorod region and Mordovia – here the nuclear shield of our country was forged.
Right after the World War II, the secret nuclear center pursued the strategic goal of achieving parity of forces in nuclear armament.
The first hydrogen bomb was created in Sarov.
And the largest thermonuclear – "Tsar-bomb".
Scientists-physicists were the first to think about the deadlock in the arms race. And called on politicians to limit the testing of the nuclear arsenal.
New discoveries of Sarov's nuclear scientists move forward energy, medicine, space research.
Sarov is also called the spiritual shield of Russia.
Sarov Monastery is a place of prayerful feat of the famous Russian saint – Seraphim of Sarov.

The Great Ascetics are therefore the greatest human stories told because they represent us in our greatest weakness, finding the greatest purpose in finding God Himself, as much as that may be found in His merciful love.

STILL TODAY THE CITY IS FENCED AND SURVEILLED BY THE ARMY AND IS ACCESSIBLE ONLY WITH AN ARMY PERMIT SO IT CANNOT BE VISITED BY FOREIGNERS OR RUSSIANS WITHOUT PERMISSION

This was not just to please ordinary Russian believers, but also because the emperor had a personal request of his own to make to Seraphim of Sarov... insisted that Seraphim of Sarov be declared a saint.
