What's the Difference between Syriac Aramaic and Biblical Aramaic?
How similar are Biblical Aramaic and Syriac? Are they two different languages or dialects? Are they mutually intelligible? In this video, I take a small sample from the book of Ezra (Ezra 4:11-13) and compare Biblical Aramaic and Syriac (Aramaic)?

More from Wikipedia: Syriac (; ܠܫܢܐ ܣܘܪܝܝܐ Leššānā Suryāyā), also known as Syrian/Syriac Aramaic, Syro-Aramaic or Classical Syriac, is a dialect of Middle Aramaic of the Northwest Semitic languages of the Afroasiatic family that is written in the Syriac alphabet, a derivation of the Aramaic alphabet. Having first appeared in the early first century AD in Edessa, classical Syriac became a major literary language throughout the Middle East from the 4th to the 8th centuries, preserved in a large body of Syriac literature. Indeed, Syriac literature comprises roughly 90% of the extant Aramaic literature. Syriac was once spoken across much of the Near East as well as Anatolia and Eastern Arabia. Syriac originated in Mesopotamia and eventually spread west of Iraq in which it became the lingua franca of the region during the Mesopotamian Neo-Assyrian period. The Old Aramaic language was adopted by the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911–609 BC) when the Assyrians conquered the various Syro-Hittite states to its west. The Achaemenid Empire (546–332 BC), which rose after the fall of the Assyrian Empire, also retained Old Aramaic as its official language, and Old Aramaic remained the lingua franca of the region. During the course of the third and fourth centuries AD, the inhabitants of the region began to embrace Christianity. Because of theological differences, Syriac-speaking Christians bifurcated during the 5th century into the Church of the East, or East Syrians under Sasanian rule, and the Syriac Orthodox, or West Syrians under the Byzantine empire. After this separation, the two groups developed distinct dialects differing primarily in the pronunciation and written symbolization of vowels. The modern, and vastly spoken, Syriac varieties today include Assyrian Neo-Aramaic, Chaldean Neo-Aramaic, and Turoyo, among others, which, in turn, have their own subdialects as well. Alonisrag with Latin and Greek, Syriac became one of "the three most important Christian languages in the early centuries" of the Common Era. From the 1st century AD, Syriac became the vehicle of Syriac Christianity and culture, and the liturgical language of the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Maronite Church, and the Church of the East, along with its descendants: the Chaldean Catholic Church, the Assyrian Church of the East, the Ancient Church of the East, the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, the Syriac Catholic Church, and the Assyrian Pentecostal Church. Syriac Christianity and language spread throughout Asia as far as the South Indian Malabar Coast and Eastern China, and was the medium of communication and cultural dissemination for the later Arabs and, to a lesser extent, the Parthian Empire and Sasanian Empire. Primarily a Christian medium of expression, Syriac had a fundamental cultural and literary influence on the development of Arabic, which largely replaced it towards the 14th century. Syriac remains the sacred language of Syriac Christianity to this day.

In a remote village nestled in Syrias picturesque Oalamoun mountains, resides a small Aramaic community. It is one of the last and it is devoted to preserving Aramaic: the language that Jesus spoke.
Protecting this 3000-year-old language has united Malulas residents: Christians and Muslims are like brothers in this town, says local resident Ibrahim Kamar. Whilst Mel Gibsons The Passion of Christ has revived interest in the language, fears that Aramaic is dying out continue. Malula, where the orphans must recite in Aramaic, is one of the last bastions for a language Mother Superior Savaf describes as a gift from God.

Syriac (Aramaic) and Ge'ez (Ethiopic) are two of the coolest ancient Semitic languages that you've probably never heard of. In this video, I compare the similarities and differences between these languages and how they relate to other Semitic languages like Hebrew, Arabic, or Akkadian.
I've always found Ge'ez to be very familiar to me as I consider it a type of African Aramaic. Fair warning though. I'm not as proficient in Ge'ez, what is also known as Ethiopic, as I am in other Semitic languages like Syriac (the Aramaic dialect from ancient Edessa). That means I may pronounce things like a Ferenji. If you've never heard of these languages before, I encourage you to delve deeper into them and those who still utilize them, whether through liturgical prayers or in their modern descendants (if we may call the modern languages descendants).
NOTE: I made a typo that emerges around the 26 minute mark. The commentary found between 26:50-27:06 was based on that typo.

Assyrian People
Assyrians also known as Syriacs/Arameans or Chaldeans are an ethnic group indigenous to the Middle East. They are speakers of the Neo-Aramaic branch of Semitic languages as well as the primary languages in their countries of residence, modern Assyrians are Syriac Christians who claim descent from Assyria, one of the oldest civilizations in the world, dating back to 2500 BC in ancient Mesopotamia.

What on Earth Happened to the Assyrians?
What on Earth happened to the Assyrians, Chaldeans, Arameans and other such Syriac peoples who once ruled the region of Mesopotamia and the Levant with an iron fist? Today we'll discuss the ancient and modern history of one of the world's most influential and significant groups.
Although the Assyrian presence in the Middle East is rapidly declining, the Assyrian/Syriac identity is still strong around the globe, with the overseas diaspora mostly contributing to this historic revival and awakening of the community. Please let me know your thoughts on the Assyrians, Maronites, St. Thomas Christians and the Syriac people as a whole. Thanks for watching!

Assyria: Identity, Heritage & Politics | Sabrina Bet-Mansour | TEDxFrancisHollandSchoolSloaneSquare
I am Assyrian, a descendant of the Assyrian-Babylonian empires of Mesopotamia, the cradle of Western civilisation. Ancient Assyrians had more than military might; they were innovators and made important inventions we still use today. Assyria has not existed as a country since our empire fell almost 7,000 years ago, but our nation, language, culture, and traditions have survived. Today, the global diaspora of Assyrians and the religious and ethnic persecutions in the Middle East pose the gravest of challenges to our nation. I will talk about how I learned about my Assyrian heritage and how it informs my identity. I will also talk about the challenges we face and what we must do to preserve our nation. Assyrian Genocide: A Fate Worse Than Death
It seems impossible that we would forget genocides of entire people, but events like the Assyrian genocide show us how fickle human memory can be. Also called the Sayfo, meaning ‘the sword’, the Assyrian genocide was one of three mass campaigns of extermination waged by the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. Alongside the more famous Armenian genocide and that of the Greeks, hundreds of thousands of Assyrians lost their lives in racially and religiously motivated atrocities at the command of the Ottoman government between 1914 and 1918.
The struggle of the Assyrians is easily overlooked, but it contains tales of incredible brutality and of admirable resistance. Today on A Day In History, we look at how the atrocities of the Sayfo unfolded, the deplorable ways that the Ottomans dec...

Sabrina is a student at Francis Holland School, Sloane Square. She plans on studying languages and the interaction of cultures, and has a profound interest in Sports Psychology. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Today on A Day In History, we look at how the atrocities of the Sayfo unfolded, the deplorable ways that the Ottomans deceived their victims, and the stories of the men who took up arms to defend themselves from those who would exterminate them.

Prelude
The Assyrians are an ethnic group united by their shared languages which derive from ancient Aramaeic. Christianity They are also thorouglhy Christian although split between several denominations, of which the largest are the Orthodox Assyrian Church of the East and Syrian Orthodox Church, and the Chaldean Catholic Church.
Unlike the Armenians, the Assyrians have never been politically unified - there is no real link between the ancient Assyrian empire and the modern Assyrian people - and they were treated as a loose ethnic group with no fixed territory. Like other Christian minorities in the Ottoman Empire, they faced sporadic violence and persecution for decades before the genocide. In 1895, Assyrians were among the victims of the waves of violence that killed thousands of Christians across the Empire and they faced regular discrimination in law and public life. Violence from Turkish authorities and Kurdish raiders continued throughout the early 20th century with land seizures, forced conversion, and mob violence becoming regular features of life.
Things changed with the rise of Turkish ethnonationalism and the First World War. The Empire’s new ruler Talaat Pasha envisioned an ethnically Turkish empire where minorities were excluded, or eliminated. The Ottomans also saw the Assyrians as a security risk, fearing that they would side with Russia once the fighting began.

The terminology was first used in the 1780s by members of the Göttingen school of history, who derived the name from Shem, one of the three son...

Jewish student calls anti-Semitism claims ‘distraction from Gaza genocide’
“This has all been a distraction because they don’t want us talking about the non-stop massacre of Gaza”
Jared Kannel, a Jewish student taking part in the Gaza encampment at Columbia University, tells TRT World that he feels “100% safe” on campus and that US officials are trying to evade Israel’s war crimes by exclusively focusing on “anti-Semitism” on college campuses.

Throughout human history, Jews have been subject to religious discrimination, genocide and pogroms. Ranging from the ancient world to 2022, anti-semetism has been prevalent and it begs the question why it has happened consistently throughout human history. The purpose of this video is to investigate the history of antisemitism, its causes and why it is still happening today in 2022. To answer this, we are going to analyse the most significant moments of Jewish persecution in human history and to see exactly why Jewish people were targeted. You’re watching All Things Humanities.

The Semitic languages (77 languages) are a branch of the Afroasiatic language family. They are spoken by more than 330 million people across much of West Asia, the Horn of Africa, and latterly North Africa, Malta, West Africa, and in large immigrant and expatriate communities in North America, Europe, and Australasia. The terminology was first used in the 1780s by members of the Göttingen school of history, who derived the name from Shem, one of the three sons of Noah in the Book of Genesis.
Most scripts used to write Semitic languages are abjads – a type of alphabetic script that omits some or all of the vowels, which is feasible for these languages because the consonants are the primary carriers of meaning in the Semitic languages. These include the Ugaritic, Phoenician, Aramaic, Hebrew, Syriac, Arabic, and ancient South Arabian alphabets. The Geʽez script, used for writing the Semitic languages of Ethiopia and Eritrea, is technically an abugida – a modified abjad in which vowels are notated using diacritic marks added to the consonants at all times, in contrast with other Semitic languages which indicate diacritics based on need or for introductory purposes. Maltese is the only Semitic language written in the Latin script and the only Semitic language to be an official language of the European Union.
