Pevensey is a village and civil parish in the Wealden district of East Sussex, England. The main village is located 5miles (8km) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6km) inland from Pevensey Bay. The settlement of Pevensey Bay forms part of the parish. It was here that William the Conqueror first landed on and invaded England in 1066 after crossing the English Channel from Normandy, France.
Geography
Pevensey is situated on a spur of sand and clay, about 10 metres (33ft) above sea level. In Roman times this spur was a peninsula that projected into a tidal lagoon and marshes. A small river, Pevensey Haven, runs along the north side of the peninsula and would originally have discharged into the lagoon, but is now largely silted up. The lagoon extended inland as far north as Hailsham and eastwards to Hooe. With the effect of longshore drift this large bay was gradually cut off from the sea by shingle, so that today's marshes are all that remain behind the shingle beach.
PEVENSEY CASTLE | This FORTRESS served as a Staging Ground for the BATTLE OF HASTINGS | Walking Tour
Pevensey Castle, nestled on the South-Eastern coast of England, holds a rich history that spans over a millennium. Originally built by the Romans in the 4th century, this historic fortress played a crucial role in the defence against Saxon raids. The castle's strategic location, surrounded by water during high tide, made it an ideal stronghold to safeguard against invaders.
In 1066, Pevensey Castle became a pivotal site during the Norman Conquest of England. William the Conqueror chose the castle as his landing point, and it served as the staging ground for the Norman forces before the famous Battle of Hastings. Over the centuries, the castle underwent various modifications, reflecting the changing needs and architectural styles of each era.

Come with me on a little trip around one of the amazing ancient castle's in my area, Pevensey Castle in East Sussex.
