The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC; Russian:Ру́сская правосла́вная це́рковь, tr.Rússkaya Pravoslávnaya Tsérkov), alternatively legally known as the Moscow Patriarchate (Russian:Моско́вский Патриарха́т, tr.Moskóvskiy Patriarkhát), is one of the autocephalousEastern Orthodox churches, in full communion with other Eastern Orthodox patriarchates. The Primate of the ROC is the Patriarch of Moscow and all Rus'. The ROC, as well as the primate thereof, officially ranks fifth in the Orthodox order of precedence, immediately below the four ancientPatriarchates of the Greek Orthodox Church, those of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem. The official Christianization of Kievan Rus' widely seen as the birth of the ROC is believed to have occurred in 988 through the baptism of the Kievan prince Vladimir and his people by the clergy of the Ecumenical Patriarchate whose constituent part the ROC remained for the next six centuries, while the Kievan see remained in the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate until 1686.
The Eastern Orthodox Church, officially the Orthodox Catholic Church, also referred to as the Orthodox Church, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Orthodoxy, is the second largest Christian Church in the world, with an estimated 225–300 million adherents.
United in communion with the Latin Church before the East–West Schism in 1054, and with the Oriental churches for the first quarter of its history, Eastern Orthodoxy spread throughout the Roman and later Byzantine Empires and beyond, playing a prominent role in European, Near Eastern, Slavic, and some African cultures. Its most prominent episcopal see is Constantinople.
Eastern Orthodoxy has no Papacy or similar authority, but instead teaches that all bishops are equal by virtue of their ordination, and each autocephalous church is typically governed by a Holy Synod. This is one of the main reasons for the division between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church. The commonly-used but unofficial designation "Eastern" derives from the geographical location of the main centers of Orthodoxy in relation to the "Western" churches (now known as the Roman Catholic Church), and from Constantinople being the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.
While sharing many traditions, East and West in Christianity began to diverge from each other from an early date. Whereas the basilica, a long aisled hall with an apse at one end, was the most common form in the West, a more compact centralised style became predominant in the East.
These churches were in origin 'martyria' focused on the tombs of the saints—specifically, the martyrs who had died during the persecutions, which only fully ended with the conversion of the Emperor Constantine. They copied pagan tombs and were roofed over by a dome which symbolised heaven. The central dome was then often surrounded by structures at the four points of the compass producing a cruciform shape - these were themselves often topped by towers or domes. The centralised and basilica structures were sometimes combined as in the church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The basilican east end then allowed for the erection of an iconostasis, a screen on which icons are hung and which conceals the altar from the worshippers except at those points in the liturgy when its doors are opened.
The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (Russian:Ру́сская Правосла́вная Це́рковь Заграни́цей, Russkaya Pravoslavnaya Tserkov' Zagranitsey), also called the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, ROCA, or ROCOR, is a semi-autonomous part of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Church has around 400 parishes worldwide, and an estimated membership of over 400,000 people. Of these, 138 parishes and 10monasteries are in the United States, with 27,700 adherents and 9,000regular church attendees. ROCOR has 13 hierarchs, with monasteries and nunneries in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Western Europe and South America.
Russia-1 (Russian:Россия-1) is a state-owned Russiantelevision channel founded in 1991. It belongs to the All-Russia State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK). Russia Channel was previously known as RTR (Russian:РТР). Russia-1 has the second largest audience in Russian television. In a typical week, it is viewed by 75% of urban Russians, compared to 83% for the leading channel, Channel One. The two channels are similar in their politics, and they compete directly in entertainment. Russia-1 has many regional variations and broadcasts in many languages.
History
Soviet period
Russia-1 had started in 1965 as Program 3 in the Soviet Union and moved to Channel 2 in 1967 when a new channel, Program 4 (now known as NTV), was officially launched and the Moscow Program, which started in 1956, was transferred to Channel 3. From the very start, it only hosted programs produced by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union, as well as children's programming, in monochrome. The move to a new channel frequency resulted in it being renamed Program 2 and becoming the second home of the national newscast Vremya since 1968.
With the fall of the monarchy, the trial period began for the Russian church. With the beginning of the revolution the policy of violent imposition of atheism spread in Russia. The looting of several temples became the result of this fact.
State pressure on the church weakened in the last months of 1941, after a series of military failures of Soviet troops in the war with Germany. The war of 1941-1945 united believers and unbelievers.
After the disintegration of the USSR in 1991 the Russian Orthodox Church began to be reborn, and with it the persecution of believers, widespread in Soviet times, ceased. The reconstruction of old temples and the building of new Christian temples began.

🇷🇺 Russia: The Orthodox Connection | People & Power
Under communism the Russian Orthodox Church was suppressed - its property confiscated, its followers ridiculed, harassed and imprisoned.
But these days, a resurgent and muscular church is central to President Vladimir Putin's ideas of Russian identity - an echo chamber, say critics - to Kremlin policies at home and abroad.
"Many of Putin's opponents believe the glowing endorsements and mutual back-slaps the Kremlin and the Orthodox Church give each other these days are contributing to ever more tightly defined social and religious conservatism, intolerant nationalism and a growing personality cult around the president," write filmmakers Glenn Ellis and Viktoryia Kolchyna who went to Russia investigate the relationship between Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church.

How Putin Is Using The Orthodox Church To Build His Power (HBO)
Vladimir Putin's victory in last week's Russian presidential elections came as no surprise. Putin has spent much of the past two decades building an enduring and loyal following in Russia, and alliances with some of the country's most powerful institutions — none, perhaps, more important that the Russian Orthodox Church, which has fully embraced his leadership.
It's all part of a dramatic turnaround for the Church, which just 30 years ago was only a marginal force in Russian society.
"...it seemed to us that the rise of the Russian Orthodox Church was unstoppable."
So what lies behind these ever closer ties? What are the implications? And after decades of suppression, how did this renaissance come about?

Vladimir Putin's victory in last week's Russian presidential elections came as no surprise. Putin has spent much of the past two decades building an enduring and loyal following in Russia, and alliances with some of the country's most powerful institutions — none, perhaps, more important that the Russian Orthodox Church, which has fully embraced his leadership.
It's all part of a dramatic turnaround for the Church, which just 30 years ago was only a marginal force in Russian society. The Soviets had sought to stamp out organized faith, stripping religion from education, arresting clergymen, and ordering the destruction of many of Russia's grand cathedrals, including one, Christ the Savior, that was demolished to make room for a public pool.
But under Putin, the Church has been making a comeback. More than 70% of Russians today identify as Russian Orthodox, up from 30% at the end of the Soviet Union. And huge swaths of land have been transferred back to religious ownership, with thousands of new churches being built or restored -- at a rate of almost three a day, by church figures. And Putin, by building loyalty among the leaders of a cherished institution, has arguably been the greatest beneficiary of this largesse.
VICE News Tonight went to Moscow to ask Church leaders, and experts on the role of religion in society, how the church's resurrection has played into Putin's gambit for everlasting power.

The Russian Churches Built without Nails
Two wooden churches and a bell tower have proudly stood on Kizhi Island in Russia for hundreds of years, weathering the test and tumult of time with only a tree-born tenacity. That's a dramatic way of saying that these impressive and ornate structures were built in the traditional Russian carpentry style, using only wooden logs with interlocking corners—no nails or metal supports here whatsoever. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Church of the Transfiguration, the Church of the Intercession and their corresponding bell tower are a reminder that craft and ingenuity really are what building's all about.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:

- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! Historic Russian Orthodox Cathedrals and Churches from the 11th to the 20th Centuries

Dean McKenzie, who retired in 1988 from the University of Oregon's Department of Art History (today's Department of the History of Art and Architecture). Presented here are cathedrals and churches built from the 11th to the 20th centuries in a vast array of architectural styles in locations as diverse as St. Petersburg, Russia, and Unalaska, Alaska—a small city 800 miles southwest of Anchorage in the remote Aleutian Island chain. Structures such as the Cathedral of Saint Vasily the Blessed (popularly known in English as St. Basil's), located on the Red Square in Moscow will be known to many, while others, such as the Church of Saint Nicholas in Juneau, Alaska, will likely be less familiar. St. Basil's represents the culmination of a national style that reached its peak during the 16th century, while the more contemporary Saint Nicholas indicates the extent to which aspects of that style were disseminated on a global scale. Examples of native Russian wooden churches, known as kokoshniki, from which the more grand constructions of later centuries evolved, are included here as well. Despite the multiplicity of sites represented in these photographs, design details closely associated with Russian Orthodox architecture, like tent-shaped roofs, tiered gables, and onion domes, appear frequently.
Professor McKenzie, who received his MA from the University of California, Berkeley, and his PhD from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University, taught Medieval art for over twenty years at the U of O before he and his wife, Lucile, generously donated funds to endow the McKenzie Icon Gallery.

SUMMARY
=======
Eastern Orthodox church architecture constitutes a distinct, recognizable family of styles among church architectures. These styles share a cluster of fundamental similarities, having been influenced by the common legacy of Byzantine architecture from the Eastern Roman Empire. Some of the styles have become associated with the particular traditions of one specific autocephalous Orthodox patriarchate, whereas others are more widely used within the Eastern Orthodox Church.
These architectural styles have held substantial influence over cultures outside Eastern Orthodoxy; particularly in the architecture of Islamic mosques, but also to some degree in Western churches.

"...it seemed to us that the rise of the Russian Orthodox Church was unstoppable."
So what lies behind these ever closer ties? What are the implications? And after decades of suppression, how did this renaissance come about?
The Post's Amie Ferris-Rotman explains why Russia's backing of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the civil war is deeply rooted in Russia's ties to the church. Read more: https://wapo.st/2vfalhs. Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube: https://wapo.st/2QOdcqK

As Russian President Vladimir Putin returns from his trip to the Vatican this week, the Russian Orthodox church is planning to create its own 'Vatican'. Church leaders hope to transform a small town north of Moscow into the centre of Russian Orthodoxy - at a time when Russian President Putin is embracing the Church. Harry Horton has this report.

His Holiness Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow and all the Rus Cyril, has consecrated the Patriarchal Main Military Cathedral of Christ's Resurrection. The Cathedral is built to thank God for the Victory of Russia in the Great Patriotic War (Second World War), and to remember all the pious and baptized fallen soldiers. This is the third largest Cathedral in Russia.

The leader of the Orthodox Church in Russia has consecrated a new cathedral dedicated to the armed forces.
But the monument is causing unease among many Russians, who say it shows more devotion to military leaders and not to religion.

Othrodox churches, or Eastern Orthodox as they are often called, have a lot of theology to cover in 2 minutes, but here's a quick and oversimplified rundown.
You may be wondering what the real difference is between religious beliefs. They all believe in God, so what makes them so different? Today we are going to examine what the fundamental differences are between Catholic and Orthodox religions.

A. Dean McKenzie, Professor Emeritus of Art History, presents on Russian Orthodox Church architecture over a period of 2000 years.
Historic Russian Orthodox Cathedrals and Churches from the 11th to the 20th Centuries
February 12, 2013 to August 11, 2013
The photographs of sacred Russian Orthodox sites displayed on this wall and available for digital viewing at the adjacent media station were taken during research trips by Professor A.

Eastern Orthodox church architecture
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
