The Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch, also known as the Antiochian Orthodox Church (Greek:Πατριαρχεῖον Ἀντιοχείας, Patriarcheîon Antiocheías; Arabic:بطريركية أنطاكية وسائر المشرق للروم الأرثوذكس, Baṭriyarkiyya Anṭākiya wa-Sāʾir al-Mashriq li'l-Rūm al-Urthūdhuks; Turkish:Antakya ve Tüm Şark'ın Rum Ortodoks Patrikliği"Roman Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East"), is an autocephalousGreek Orthodox Church within the wider communion of Eastern OrthodoxChristianity. Headed by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch, it considers itself the successor to the Christian community founded in Antioch by the ApostlesPeter and Paul.
The Greek Orthodox churches are descended from churches which the Apostles founded in the Balkans and the Middle East during the first century A.D., and they maintain many traditions practiced in the ancient Church. Orthodox Churches, unlike the Catholic Church, have no Bishopric head, such as a Pope, and hold the belief that Christ is the head of the Church. However, they are each governed by a committee of Bishops, called the Holy Synod, with one central Bishop holding the honorary title of "first among equals."
Highrock Church (the meeting house was formerly known as the Saint Athanasius Greek Orthodox Church) is a historic church meeting house at 735 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, Massachusetts, that is currently home to an Evangelical Covenant Church congregation.
Building history
The church building was constructed in 1841 for a Universalist congregation that had broken off from First Parish Congregational Church when it espoused a Unitarian doctrine. In 1961, the two congregations reunited in a building across the street. In 1964, Saint Athasius Greek Orthodox Church purchased the building from the Universalists and made the site its home until 2004. The church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. In 2006, Highrock Church, a congregation founded in 1999, purchased the building from the Greek Orthodox Church congregation when it moved to another larger structure (the former site of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Arlington).
According to Acts 11:19-26, the Christian community at Antioch began when Christians who were scattered from Jerusalem because of persecution fled to Antioch. They were joined by Christians from Cyprus and Cyrene who migrated to Antioch. It was in Antioch that the followers of Jesus were first referred to as Christians.
A main point of interest, however, is connected with the progress of Christianity among the non-Jewish believers. Tradition holds that the first Gentile church was founded, Acts 11:20-21, where it is recorded that the disciples of Jesus Christ were first called Christians Acts 11:19-26. It was from Antioch that St. Paul started on his missionary journeys.
Antioch on the Orontes (/ˈæntiˌɒk/; also Syrian Antioch) was an ancient Greek - Roman city on the eastern side of the Orontes River. Its ruins lie near the modern city of Antakya, Turkey, and lends the modern city its name.
Antioch was founded near the end of the 4th century BC by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander the Great's generals. The city's geographical, military, and economic location benefited its occupants, particularly such features as the spice trade, the Silk Road, and the Persian Royal Road. It eventually rivaled Alexandria as the chief city of the Near East. It was also the main center of Hellenistic Judaism at the end of the Second Temple period. Most of the urban development of Antioch was done during the Roman empire, when the city was one of the most important in the eastern Mediterranean area of Rome's dominions.
Antioch was called "the cradle of Christianity" as a result of its longevity and the pivotal role that it played in the emergence of both Hellenistic Judaism and Early Christianity. The Christian New Testament asserts that the name Christian first emerged in Antioch. It was one of the four cities of the Syrian tetrapolis, and its residents were known as Antiochenes. The city was once a great metropolis of half a million people during Augustan times, but it declined to insignificance during the Middle Ages because of warfare, repeated earthquakes, and a change in trade routes, which no longer passed through Antioch from the far east, following the Mongol conquests.
Antioch is a station on Metra's North Central Service in Antioch, Illinois. The station is 55.7 miles (89.6km) away from Union Station, the southern terminus of the line. In Metra's zone-based fare system, Antioch is in zone K.
Antioch is the northern terminus of the North Central Service.

In the Spring of 1988 Metropolitan Pavlos appeared on the Oprah Winfrey program. Though he was originally scheduled to be on the panels sitting on stage, he arrived too late (due to his flight being delayed) and was seated in the audience. Though his appearance was brief he powerfully articulated the Orthodox postion regarding the unfortunate film "The Last Temptation of Christ".
