The 191 acres (0.77km2) of land which form the original area of the Park (from 72nd to 125th Streets) were undeveloped prior to construction of the Hudson River Railroad, built in 1846 to connect New York City to Albany. The first proposal to convert the riverside precipice into a park was contained in a pamphlet written by William R. Martin, a parks commissioner, in 1865. In 1866, a bill introduced into the Legislature by commissioner Andrew Green was approved, the first segment of park was acquired through condemnation in 1872, and construction began.
Riverside Park is an 11.4-acre (46,000m2) public park, located in the heart of Riverside, one of the most historic neighborhoods near downtown Jacksonville, Florida. It is the second oldest park in the city.
History
The area was identified as a 14-acre public park when the Riverside section was platted along the St. Johns River in 1869. The property contained two lakes that were spring-fed and home to numerous waterfowl. However, development did not begin until years later when the land was donated to the city. Some time after 1890, a carriage lane and walking paths were created, stone bridges were constructed, and ornamentals were planted, including camphor trees. By 1907, it was one of the prettiest parks in the southern U.S. with picture postcards capturing the beauty. Tennis courts and a bandstand were built, attracting even more people to the park's natural features. When Margaret Street was laid out, it cut off the southwest corner of the park, and the north side of the property was used by Interstate 95, reducing the parcel to its current 11.4 acres. A city-owned brick storage warehouse was constructed on the park property along College Street in 1940, which is no longer used.
Six Flags New England (SFNE) is an amusement park located in Agawam, Massachusetts, a western suburb of Springfield. Opened in 1870 as Riverside Park, it was renamed Six Flags New England in 2000 following the purchase of Six Flags by Premier Parks in 1998. Six Flags New England is the oldest amusement park in the Six Flags chain. Superman the Ride (formerly Bizarro) is among the park's most notable rides having appeared in every Golden Ticket Awards publication by Amusement Today, ranking first or second in the Top Steel Roller Coasters category since 2001.

Riverside Park (late 1800s)
Throughout most of the 20th century, the park was known as Riverside Park. It started out as a picnic grove called Gallup's Grove in 1870, and was eventually renamed to Riverside Grove, then Riverside Park. Prior to 1900, most of the park's patrons arrived via steamship. The Springfield Street Railway extended its line to the park in 1900 and, although Riverside was at the end of the Springfield Street Railway, it was not owned by the railway and is, therefore, not considered a trolley park, contrary to published reports.
