Since the British Mandate, the term "Palestine" has been associated with the geographical area that currently covers the State of Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. General use of the term "Palestine" or related terms to the area at the southeast corner of the Mediterranean Sea beside Syria has historically been taking place since the times of Ancient Greece, with Herodotus writing of a "district of Syria, called Palaistine" in which Phoenicians interacted with other maritime peoples in The Histories.

President Trump calls on Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from Gaza | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said he wants Egypt and Jordan to take in Palestinians from Gaza, which he described as a “demolition site”.
In a phone call this weekend, President Trump said he had told Jordan's King Abdullah: "I'd love you to take on more, because I'm looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it's a mess, it's a real mess."
Most of Gaza's two million residents have been displaced in the 15 months of war, which has flattened much of Gaza's infrastructure.
Hamas has vowed to oppose any such action, and the comments will likely outrage Palestinians in Gaza.
Some on Israel’s far-right want to return to Gaza, and have welcomed President Trump’s comments.

President Trump’s call to “clean out” Gaza with Palestinians moving to countries such as Egypt and Jordan has been condemned as a plan for ethnic cleansing. Mr Trump called Gaza a “demolition site” and said people there should move “either temporarily or long term”.
He said: You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing". He suggested that houses could be built “at a different location where they can maybe live in peace for a change”.
The President said he had made the request to Jordan's King Abdullah and Egypt's president. Both countries have rejected the idea of taking Palestinian refugees from Gaza. Hamas and the Palestinian Authority also condemned the proposal. Lawyers and human rights advocates described it as ethnic cleansing. However the proposal has been welcomed by far-right Israeli nationalists.
Mr Trump’s comments come as a fragile ceasefire is continuing in Gaza. However there is renewed tension over Israel’s refusal to allow thousands of Palestinians to return to the north of the territory.
Jane Hill presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Lucy Williamson.

President Donald Trump said he would like to see Jordan, Egypt and other Arab nations increase the number of Palestinian refugees they are accepting from the Gaza strip area. Trump said to 'just clean out' the war-torn area. Trump also said he sent 2,000-pound bombs to Israel. “They’ve been waiting for them for a long time, " Trump said. AP News asked why he lifted the ban on those bombs, Trump responded, “Because they bought them.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not made an immediate comment. Trump added, "Gaza is interesting. It’s a phenomenal location, on the sea. The best weather, you know, everything is good. It’s like, some beautiful things could be done with it, but it’s very interesting.”

It comes hours after four female hostages - all Israeli soldiers taken on 7 October - were released by Hamas to Israel.

Hamas has freed four women and Israel has freed 200 Palestinians as part of the most recent ceasefire deal in Gaza. According to Egyptian state media, 70 of the prisoners have been deported to Egypt. It had been expected that Israel would allow displaced Palestinians to return to their homes in the north following the hostages' release, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that was not happening.
