Philippines National Railway | Makati-Alabang-Manila | Metro South Commuter
A compilation of my journey on the Metro South Commuter line of the Philippines National Railway network.
I had the opportunity to travel on both the modern PT INKA DMU as well as the diesel locomotive hauled ex-JR East 203 trainset.
The PNR network is quite antiquated and surely needs a complete overhaul but it's fascinating to experience it nevertheless.

PNR EMU 02 Back on Metro South Commuter Service! (January 05, 2023)
After almost 4 years of being inactive, ex-JR 203 series now PNR EMU set 2 is now back on track to serve the MSC line!
It can be remembered that EMU 02 was spotted serving the MSC service at around 2019, after that it was stored at Tutuban Yard indefinitely due to a technical problem.
Notice also that EMU 02 has a different configuration. It's now using the former EMU 08's head car (KuHa 202-5). The former EMU 08 headcar was stored at Pasay Road side track for several years until it was transferred back to Tutuban on the last quarter of 2022, and now it's using the former EMU 07 trailer cars. It can be also remembered that this not the first time that PNR had renumbered an EMU set head car. (Fun fact that the original EMU 02 head car is now the known EMU 03 head car, while the original EM...

PNR SOUTH COMMUTER RAILWAY UPDATE 2023
The Philippine National Railways (PNR) will stop operations for about 5 years to give way to the completion of the North South Commuter Railway (NSCR), a Transport official told lawmakers on Thursday.
Transportation Undersecretary for Rail Cesar Chavez explained this is so that they can solve the right-of-way problems that plague the NSCR construction
PNR's operations are delaying the construction and that the government can generate savings by stopping PNR's operations so they can build on the existing alignment.
PNR will suspend its rail services between Alabang, Muntinlupa City and Calamba, Laguna in October to make way for civil works of the NSCR.
Prior to that, the PNR will also shut its daily services between Governor Pascual, Malabon City and Calamba, as well as between Alabang and Calamba, in May.The suspension of PNR operations for these lines would expedite the construction of the NSCR by eight months.
The government expects to generate P15.18 billion in savings since land acquisition and relocation of utilities will be done faster.
The closing of PNR services would allow NSCR contractors to lay down the tracks and put up posts for the new railway
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) awarded contract packages (CPs) S-04, S-05, S-06 and S-07 of the NSCR traversing Tutuban to Calamba last year and will issue the remaining CPs by March.
The DOTr admitted that at least 30,000 passengers would be affected by the suspension of PNR services.
The DOTr and PNR will make formal announcements two months before the official closing of train operations The project is expected to be completed in 2028, the P873.62-billion NSCR seeks to build a rail line connecting Malolos, Bulacan with Clark International Airport and Tutuban with Calamba.

PNR SOUTH COMMUTER RAILWAY PROJECT
Under the project, 18 elevated and at-grade stations will be built and provide safe access for all, including the elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities. The South Commuter Railway will connect to the future Metro Manila Subway system and be designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. Travel time between Manila and Calamba using the railway will be reduced by over half, from 2.5 hours currently by road.
ADB is funding the civil works for the railway viaduct, stations, bridges, tunnels, and depot buildings, while the Japan International Cooperation Agency is funding the rolling stock and railway systems.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will finance the project for a total of $4.3 billion or P227.6 billion in loan financing.
The railway system will have 18 stations traversing City of Manila, Makati City, Taguig City, Paranaque City, Muntinlupa City, San Pedro City, Binan City, Santa Rosa City, Cabuyao City, and Calamba City.
A connecting tunnel will also allow the operation of direct trains from Calamba to future Metro Manila Subway system stations, further reducing the travel time between Manila and Calamba from 2.5 hours down to an hour.
The contract signing signifies the successful bid for the four different stages of the project, to be supervised by joint venture agreements between corporations from the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Turkey.
The South Commuter Railway project is seen to further strengthen the Philippines’ economic recovery from the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic as it is expected to create more than 35,500 jobs during construction and over 3,200 permanent jobs during operation.

It can be also remembered that this not the first time that PNR had renumbered an EMU set head car. (Fun fact that the original EMU 02 head car is now the known EMU 03 head car, while the original EMU 03 headcar is the former EMU 02 and by now the new EMU 08 head car.
EMU 02 has also undergone air-conditioning units replacement (same as EMUs 04, 05, 06 & 07). It is now fitted with new ones made by INKA Railway Air Conditioning (I-Cond) from Indonesia, under the same manufacturer of the new 8000/8100 series DMUs and 9000 class DHLs of PNR which is PT INKA.
Take note also that the new EMU 02 headcar was sent to Caloocan Workshops for some repairs. This included the replacement of a new generator set. From its old Multico genset, it is now fitted with a brand new Longen genset (same genset as what EMUs 04 to 07 is using now).
Upon spotting, the manufacturer of the new genset that the PNR bought is Longen, with LGCS-350 being the specific model.
