Kuwaiti/kuːˈweɪt/ (Arabic:دولة الكويتDawlat al-Kuwait), officially the State of Kuwait, is a country in Western Asia. Situated in the northern edge of Eastern Arabia at the tip of the Persian Gulf, it shares borders with Iraq and Saudi Arabia. As of 2014, Kuwait has a population of 4.2 million people; 1.3 million are Kuwaitis and 2.9 million are expatriates.
Oil reserves were discovered in 1938. From 1946 to 1982, the country underwent large-scale modernization. In the 1980s, Kuwait experienced a period of geopolitical instability and an economic crisis following the stock market crash. In 1990, Kuwait was invaded by Iraq. The Iraqi occupation came to an end in 1991 after military intervention by United States-led forces. At the end of the war, there were extensive efforts to revive the economy and rebuild national infrastructure.
Kuwait is a constitutional emirate with a high income economy backed by the world's sixth largest oil reserves. The Kuwaiti dinar is the highest valued currency in the world. According to the World Bank, the country has the fourth highest per capita income in the world. The constitution was promulgated in 1962, making Kuwait the most politically progressive country in the region. In recent years, political instability has hindered the country's economic development.
Kuwait City (Arabic:مدينة الكويت) is the capital and largest city of Kuwait. It has a population of 2.1million in the metropolitan area. Kuwait City is the political, cultural and economic center of Kuwait. Kuwait City is considered a global city. Kuwait City's trade and transportation needs are served by Kuwait International Airport, Mina Al-Shuwaik (Shuwaik Port) and Mina Al Ahmadi (Ahmadi Port).
History
Early history
In 1613, the town of Kuwait was founded in modern-day Kuwait City. In 1716, the Bani Utubs settled in Kuwait. At the time of the arrival of the Utubs, Kuwait was inhabited by a few fishermen and primarily functioned as a fishing village. In the eighteenth century, Kuwait prospered and rapidly became the principal commercial center for the transit of goods between India, Muscat, Baghdad and Arabia. By the mid 1700s, Kuwait had already established itself as the major trading route from the Persian Gulf to Aleppo.
During the Persian siege of Basra in 1775–1779, Iraqi merchants took refuge in Kuwait and were partly instrumental in the expansion of Kuwait's boat-building and trading activities. As a result, Kuwait's maritime commerce boomed. Between the years 1775 and 1779, the Indian trade routes with Baghdad, Aleppo, Smyrna and Constantinople were diverted to Kuwait. The East India Company was diverted to Kuwait in 1792. The East India Company secured the sea routes between Kuwait, India and the east coasts of Africa. After the Persians withdrew from Basra in 1779, Kuwait continued to attract trade away from Basra.
Kuwait is a group of approximately 40 paintings made by Nabil Kanso in 1990-91 on the Gulf War and Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. The works in the series were first exhibited in Kuwait in March – April 1992 at the Free Atelier Art Center and traveled in June to Caracas for a special exhibit at the Palacio de Gobierno in honor of the Emir of Kuwait’s visit to Venezuela. Then, the exhibition proceeded to Geneva and was held at the Red Cross Museum in July – August 1992.
Kuwait has changed a lot since the gulf war. It is now a wealthy and safe country with a very low crime rate, which makes it an ideal starting point for travelers who want to experience the Muslim world and Arabian hospitality. However, as with any country that is culturally different from our own there are some things NOT to do in Kuwait!
1. Don't Photograph Everything!
You may want to document your trip but be careful when taking photos. Avoid taking photos of, or near infrastructure, oil fields or government buildings as this can lead to detention or arrest, also some shopping centers have prohibited photography too.

2. Don't Underdress
Although Kuwaiti people are diverse and tolerant, they are conservative. Its fine to wear a bikini at the hotel pool, but not at the public beach, avoid short skirts or shorts, low necklines, and sleeveless shirts. Dress conservatively and they'll respect you for it.
3. Don't Refuse An Invite
If you're invited to an Arab home always accept! It's the best way to learn more about their culture. be respectful and grateful. They will probably ask you want you think of their country, comment about the people and the culture but avoid religion and politics, especially if your views are negative, The Emir of Kuwait is venerated, and insulting him verbally or otherwise can be punished by up to 7 years prison time.
4. Don't Hire a Car!
The people of Kuwait are conservative and civilized, until, they get behind a wheel! Kuwaiti drivers are not known for their respect for the highway code or indeed any rules of the road. lack of seat belts, use of mobile phones, running red lights, speeding, and lack of any kind of signaling are all too common occurrences, so the risk of an accident is high. If you can avoid hiring a car, do so!
5. Don't Stare!
Staring at people is considered offensive and rude. whereas normally you may sit in a cafe and watch people walk by, in Kuwait this would be considered offensive, especially if you're staring at the opposite sex.
6. Don't Ask For a Beer!
Alcohol is totally prohibited in Kuwait. It can't be imported, manufactured, or served, not even by permit holders or at a hotel. Asking for a beer in Kuwait is tantamount to asking a rock for some honey.
7. Other Things To Avoid
Avoid public displays of affection, especially if you're homosexual. Homosexual acts are illegal in Kuwait. Avoid using your left hand for eating or shaking hands. Remember right hand clean, left hand dirty. Avoid calling a taxi from the roadside. always book one beforehand and use a reputable company.

Like many young Saudi men, Jared’s father came to America to study in the 1970s. At university, he met Jared’s mum and they began a relationship. When she became pregnant, he disappeared back home.
Throughout his childhood and into adulthood, Jared was obsessed with finding his Saudi father.
“I had that overwhelming urge and drive...to find him, locate him, learn about him, learn about the culture. It was just an innate instinct.”
Jared connected once on the phone when he was in his early twenties but his father rejected him. Now that Saudi Arabia has begun to open up to the world, Jared wants to try again.
Reporter Brietta Hague and Saudi producer Essam Al-Ghalib tell the exclusive story of Jared as he travels to the Kingdom to try and track down his father. It’s a dangerous, fraught and emotionally risky mission.
Jared's family is powerful and well-connected in Saudi and Jared bumps up against the unwritten rules of a deeply conservative society, which values reputation and family honour above all.
Jared is not alone in his quest to connect with his Saudi father.
Saudi men abroad continue to father and abandon children. In Guatemala, we meet a young boy and his single mother, his Saudi father long since departed. Sami Alrajhi Chang visits the mosque every week to learn Arabic in the hope he may one day meet his Saudi family.
Sami’s father Sulaiman came to study in the USA as part of a Saudi government scholarship programme. There he met student Mandre Chang. Despite promising her marriage and a life together, he abandoned Mandre days after Sami’s birth.
Mandre and Sami are part of a global network of people searching for answers. Stone-walled by the Saudi government and embassies, Mandre sought the help of a blog called ‘Saudi Children Left Behind’, a platform encouraging the children and ex-partners of Saudi men to publish their stories of abandonment in the hope they’ll make contact.
'Saudi Children Left Behind' is an untold story about the powerful human impulse to connect with family, against all odds, and a rare insight into the rigid rules governing this hidden Kingdom – rules about kinship, obligation and family honour.

We have shown you what happens in Kuwait during the day, but what happens at NIGHT? This dry country (which we were not expecting) is very similar to Saudi Arabia in terms of malls, restaurants and walking along the beach front being a popular activity for many people to do at night. We did however find SOME Bars (non alcoholic of course) we also visited their biggest shopping Mall, we think anyway! It's the end of our adventures, for now, here in the Middle East. We hope you enjoyed!

A troubled man. His missing father. A secretive Kingdom, faraway. American Jared Morrison has dreamed of meeting his dad since he was a kid.

Like many young Saudi men, Jared’s father came to America to study in the 1970s. At university, he met Jared’s mum and they began a relationship. When she became pregnant, he disappeared back home.
