Polycarp of Smyrna - The Complete Story Documentary | Church Fathers
Who was Polycarp? In this video, we'll discuss the history of the Apostolic Father and his contribution to the future generations of Christianity.

In about AD 98, Clement of Rome wrote an epistle to the church in Corinth on behalf of his church, and Ignatius of Antioch wrote epistles to six other churches in 107 in addition to his epistle addressed to Polycarp. Smyrna, my beloved (2021)| Trailer 2| Historical Drama| Rupert Graves| English Subtitles
Again, I am super-excited that this new Greek super production is coming out soon, and I want to spread the news. The story concerns a major event in Greek History: the ultimate destruction of the city of Smyrna and the massacre of it's Christian population (Greeks and Armenians) by the Turkish Army in1922.
"I am from Smyrna, and this is my Smyrna, cosmopolitan and loud, full of joy, feasts and delights". The film tells the story of a wealthy Greek family living a carefree life in Smyrna full of balls, coctails, operas and... secret passions. All of this will come to an end by the destructive forces of war, turkish nationalism and long hidden hatred. The living paradise of Smyrna will be suddenly turned into a burning hell!

1922 The Destruction of Smyrna
This is a short extract from the documentary "The Asia Minor Campaign" by SKAI TV. It features several shocking eyewitness accounts of the event such as the chronicle by George Horton who was then USA Consul at Smyrna and a live interview with Ioannes Krassopoulos who survived the holocaust.
In September 1922, Mustafa Kemal led his troops into Smyrna, a predominantly Christian city, as a flotilla of 27 Allied warships looked on. The Turks soon proceeded to indulge in an orgy of pillage, rape and slaughter that the Great Powers condoned by their silence and refusal to intervene. Turkish forces then set fire to the legendary city and totally destroyed it. Smyrna had been the most ancient Greek city in Asia Minor, founded by Greek colonists in the beginning of the first millennium BC.

SMYRNA: THE DESTRUCTION OF A COSMOPOLITAN CITY, 1900-1922
Visit our website http://www.smyrnadocumentary.org
"SMYRNA"
The documentary film, "Smyrna: The Destruction of a Cosmopolitan City, 1900-1922" opened this past January in Athens at the Benaki Museum -- one of the most prominent institutions in Greece. "Smyrna" played every day for more than two months, with 3-4 screenings per day, to great acclaim from the critics and the general public. Long lines stretched in front of the Museum. The screenings were so successful that the Museum, for the first time in its history, remained open during evenings. The critics spoke about an exceptional and profoundly moving documentary.
Film Director Maria Iliou and historical consultant Alexander Kitroeff, bring to life the rich story of the city that was tragically lost in 1922.
Rare film footage and...

"Wish I was there for a while" - Greek song about Smyrna
like today 13September the Turks enter the city of Smyrna and killed, raped, robbed the Greeks and Armenians of the city. The whole Greek and Armenian section of the city burned to the ground and only the Turkish and Jewish homes did not get hurt. This is a message to the Turks, the communist Greeks and everyone else who do not accept the reality of how much pain the Greeks and my family faced during the Genocide of the Cristian population in the Ottoman Empire.
The blame should be put also to the Greeks themselves for instead being uniting and liberate their brothers in Minor Asia, they preferred to fight each other and let the Greeks of Minor Asia to their fate.
Turks you didn't throw to the sea our army, you threw civilians
WE WILL BE BACK AND WE WILL BE UNITED!!!

IMDb rate: 7,9/10
Directed by Grigoris Karantinakis
Cast:
Mimi Denissi
Leonidas Kakouris
Anastasia Pantousi
Burak Hakki
Rupert Graves
Susan Hampshire
Movie Trivia:
1. Major British stars, Sherock's Rupert Graves and The Crown's Susan Hampshire appear in key roles in the movie.
2. Mimi Denissi, who stars in the film and co-writes the screenplay (with Martin Sherman) is a prominent force in the Greek theatre. She is one of the most celebrated actresses in Greek as well as the most acclaimed translator of her generation, a major producer and director, and the author of six extraordinarily popular historical dramas. The movie «Smyrna, my beloved» is based on her stage play "Smyrni moy agapimeni" (known also as "Smyrna"), attended by over 1.000.000 viewers».
3. The City of Smyrna was a multicultural and cosmopolitan center for centuries. According to the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire at the time, Henry Morgenthau, more than half of Smyrna's population was Greek. This is the reason the Turks called it "Gavour Izmir", Izmir (Smyrna) the Infidel. Apart from Greeks, they were leaving in the city many Armenians, Jews and, of course, Turks.
In fact, the historical presence of the Greeks in Anatolia, goes back to the 12th Century AD, at the times of the Byzantine Empire, while the Turks have been there only since the second half of the 15th Century AD. That explains Anatolia's huge greek population. Sadly, most of these people where eliminated or forced to leave the land by the nationalist Goverment of Mustafa Kemal "Atatürk", the "father of all Turks".
4. When the First World War ended, the region of Smyrna was given to the Greek State, according to the Treaty of Sèvres, under the condition that the Turks would be respected. Greeks and Armenians were celebrating for days the arrival of the Greek Army. Their cries of joy would be soon be replaced by cries of help, when the Turks occupied the city once again.
The Alies (British, French and Italians) forced the Greek Army to move forward into turkish mainland. After the defeat and retreat of the Greek army in August 1922, the Turks recaptured the City on September 9, 1922.
In the immediate aftermath, the Turks set fire to the the Greek and Armenian quarters of the city, on September 13, and spread quickly due to the windy weather and the fact that no effort was made to put it out. Terryfied, thousands of Greeks and Armenians overcrowded the port, where they were slaughtered by the turkish forces. Turkish soldiers also attacked western schools and the facilities of the Orthodox Archdiocese. Greek-Orthodox Metropolitan Chrysostom was tortured, murdered and the draged around the city, according to the old Ottoman "tradition" (his lynching and mocking are visible in the film's trailer). Despite the fact that allied warships were anchored in the port, they did nothing to prevent the Catastrophe. The death toll is estimated to 100,000.
5. The Burning of Smyrna was the peak of the Greek Genocide (1918-1922) by the Turkish Goverment of Kemal Atatürk. Later, Adolf Hitler would mention Kemal as his prior inspiration for the orchistration of the Holocaust.

This is a short extract from the documentary "The
Asia Minor Campaign" by SKAI TV.
A total of more than 3.5 million Greeks, Armenians and Assyrians were killed under the successive regimes of the Young Turks and Mustafa Kemal from roughly 1914 to 1923. Of this, as many as 1.5 million Greeks may have died. The following is an abridged summary of notable events in the destruction of Smyrna:
• After the collapse of the Greek Front in Anatolia and the reoccupation of Smyrna by the Turks, Metropolitan Chrysostom was abducted by a mob incited by Nureddin Pasha, was tied to a barber chair, cruelly tortured and put to death.
• Turkish soldiers cordoned off the Armenian quarter during the massacre. Armed Turks massacred Armenians and looted the Armenian quarter.
• After their systemic massacre, Turkish soldiers in smart uniforms set fire to Armenian buildings using tins of petroleum and flaming rags soaked in flammable liquids.
• To supplement the devastation, small bombs were planted by the soldiers under paving slabs around the Christian parts of the city to take down walls. One of the bombs was planted near the American Consulate and another at the American Girl's School.
• The fire started on September 13. The last Greek soldiers had evacuated Smyrna on 8 September. The Turkish Army was in full control of Smyrna since September 9. All Christians remaining in the city who evaded massacre stayed within their homes, fearing for their lives. The fire forced them into the streets.
• The fire was initiated at one edge of the Armenian quarter when a strong wind was blowing toward the Christian part of town and away from the Muslim part of town. Citizens of the Muslim quarter were not involved in the catastrophe.
• Turkish soldiers guided the fire through the Greek and European section of Smyrna by pouring flammable liquids into the streets. The soldiers that were observed doing this had started from the quay and proceeded towards the fire, thus ensuring the rapid and controlled spread of the fire. Turkish forces then instigated a massive anti-Greek pogrom.
• The victims of the massacre are estimated at 150,000. What was left of Smyrna was only its Turkish suburb.

Rare film footage and photographs of the historic Anatolian city (today's Izmir) sourced from European and US institutions and private collections are pieced together.
First, second and third generation 'Smyrniotes' of Greek, Armenian and Turkish ancestry recount family stories, while American and European historians present the big picture.
It is a documentary that brings a new perspective to Smyrna, namely the notion of a cultural-wealthy city that lives on in some ways in the large cosmopolitan cities of today.
"Smyrna" will start playing in the commercial cinemas in Greece the 13th of September 2012.
ATHENS:
-Cinema Elli
-Greek Film Archive Film Museum (Lais Cinema)
-Benaki Museum (Piraios Street)
THESSALONIKI
-Olympion Cinema
-Museum of Cinema
-Macedonian Musem of Contemporary Art
The film was produced by PROTEUS.
PROTEUS is an organization dedicated to the mission of preserving visual and audio archival materials related to Hellenic history around the world in cooperation with other cultural and educational institutions, producing films, exhibitions and publications that make these "lost memories" available to the public.

like today 13September the Turks enter the city of Smyrna and killed, raped, robbed the Greeks and Armenians of the city.
