Ordinary World

"Ordinary World" is the first single from Duran Duran's self-titled 1993 album, better known as The Wedding Album. The single reached number one on the U.S. Hot 100 Airplay, the Mainstream Top 40 and the Canadian Singles Chart. It also peaked at number three in the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on the U.S. Alternative rock chart and number six on the UK Singles Chart.

The song won an Ivor Novello Award in May 1994. Lead vocalist Simon Le Bon later sang the song with Luciano Pavarotti, to help children affected by war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Background

By the early 1990s, Duran Duran's popularity had faded. Their album Liberty had proved a commercial failure, its two singles failing to make a significant showing on British or American charts.

It was not until Capitol leaked "Ordinary World" to a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida in the second half of 1992 that it looked like Duran Duran mania might yet hit again. The single proved so popular that Capitol had to push the US release date up, ultimately releasing it in December.

Ordinary World (novel)

Ordinary World (Chinese: 平凡的世界; pinyin: Píng Fán de Shì Jiè) is a novel by Chinese author Lu Yao. It consists of three volumes with a total of 1.1 million Chinese characters. In 1991, it won the Mao Dun Literature Prize and was honored with the title "a bright pearl of the Mao Dun Literature Prize crown".

Plot

The first volume

The story begins in the autumn of 1975, a year before the end of the Cultural Revolution in an unknown province in China.. An ordinary teenager going into adulthood in a distant village in Western China, Shaoping Sun goes to the county of YuanXi to complete his high school. His humble descent makes him shy and diffident. He falls in love with his classmate Hongmei Hao, a girl of upper class descent, which is notorious during the Cultural Revolution. However, this relationship is revealed by their classmate Yuying Hou, and the abashed Hao have no choice but to end this relationship. Hao then quickly begins another relationship with her monitor, Yangmin Gu, a young man whose family is relatively much better than Sun's. After Sun's graduation from high school, he went back home and becomes a teacher in the local village school and then becomes friend with Xiaoxia Tian, daughter of Fujun Tian, the vice president of the county's revolutionary committee.

Cajuns

Cajuns (/ˈkeɪdʒən/; French: les Cadiens or Les Cadiens or les Acadiens, [le kadjɛ̃, lez‿akadjɛ̃]) are an ethnic group mainly living in the U.S. state of Louisiana, consisting of the descendants of Acadian exiles (French-speakers from Acadia in what are now The Maritimes of Eastern Canada). Today, the Cajuns make up a significant portion of south Louisiana's population and have exerted an enormous impact on the state's culture.

While Lower Louisiana had been settled by French colonists since the late 17th century, the Cajuns trace their roots to the influx of Acadian settlers after the Great Expulsion from their homeland during the French and English hostilities prior to the Seven Years' War (1756 to 1763). The Acadia region to which modern Cajuns trace their origin consisted largely of what are now Nova Scotia and the other Maritime provinces, plus parts of eastern Quebec and northern Maine. Since their establishment in Louisiana, the Cajuns have developed their own dialect, Cajun French, and developed a vibrant culture including folkways, music, and cuisine. The Acadiana region is heavily associated with them.

Cajun (rocket)

The Cajun was an American sounding rocket developed during the 1950s. It was extensively used for scientific experiments by NASA and the United States military between 1956 and 1976.

Development

Development of the Cajun sounding rocket began in early 1956 at the Pilotless Aircraft Research Division (PARD) of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics' - later NASA - Langley Research Center, as a development of the earlier Deacon experimental rocket. Utilising the Deacon's airframe but an improved motor that utilised new, higher-energy propellants to provide better performance, the name "Cajun" was applied to the rocket by the leader of PARD's rocket division, a native of New Orleans.

The Cajun rocket was constructed of stainless steel, with extruded Duraluminum stabilising fins. The rocket motor, developed by Thiokol, was capable of producing up to 9,600 lb_f (42.7 kN) thrust.

Operational history

The first test launch of the Cajun rocket took place at the Wallops Island range in Virginia on June 20, 1956. The rocket proved to be as successful as expected, and was quickly put into extensive use, both on its own and as an upper stage in the Nike Cajun (or CAN, 'Cajun And Nike'), first launched on July 6, 1956; and in the Terasca three-stage rocket, first launched May 1, 1959. Several other sounding rocket configurations made use of the Cajun stage, the most extensively used being the Cajun Dart; the Bullpup-Cajun and Double Cajun rockets also utilised the stage.

This is the third installment of my video series on working with the shadow. I HAD intended to finish my series on the shadow today but it turns out there is so much material it will take a bit longer. If you’ve listened to my first two videos (see the links below) then you know that I’m looking at Jung’s conception of the shadow archetype and investigating what we can, as writers, draw from it. I hope you don’t mind, but in the remainder of this series -- while I will still talk about the shadow -- I’m going to broaden my focus and look at the structure of the Hero’s Journey in the context of Jung’s work more broadly. In that light, let’s ask a fundamental question: What is the hero’s goal? The hero is on a journey, so what is his goal? Where is he going? What does he want to achieve? Yes, in every story the hero will have a different goal depending on what the story is. For example, in Star Wars IV, Luke’s goal was to deliver blueprints of the death star to the rebel alliance. In Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark Indie’s goal was to find the Ark of the Covenant and bring it home to the United States so it could be studied. But is there a more general goal, a goal that all hero’s try to fulfill regardless of the specific story they find themselves in? Perhaps. Carl Jung writes: “There are natural transformation processes which simply happen to us …. This "other being" is the other person in ourselves -- that larger and greater personality maturing within us …. This relationship is a mystery to the scientific intellect, because the intellect is accustomed to regard these things unsympathetically. ... It is the representation of a friendship between two men which is simply the outer reflection of an inner fact: it reveals our relationship to that inner friend of the soul into whom Nature herself would like to change us -- that other person who we also are and yet can never attain to completely. We are that pair of Dioscuri, one of whom is mortal and the other immortal, and who, though always together, can never be made completely one. The transformation processes strive to approximate them to one another, but our consciousness is aware of resistances, because the other person seems strange and uncanny, and because we cannot get accustomed to the idea that we are not absolute master in our own house. We should prefer to be always "I" and nothing else. But we are confronted with that inner friend or foe, and whether he is our friend or our foe depends on ourselves.” (Carl Jung, Vol 9 Part 1, The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, papa. 234, page 130) So there’s a lot to unpack there! I’m not a Jungian scholar but I take it that Jung, here, is expressing the thought that we are not just our consciousness, we are not just our Ego, we are also a (sometimes unfelt) Self. I think that the goal of the Jungian Hero’s Journey is for the protagonist to confront that inner friend and get to know them as much as possible. In doing so we will come to know ourselves. Part of this journey, a necessary start to this journey, is integrating -- is shining a light upon -- the parts of ourselves that lie in shadow. Okay, I just wanted to set that up. Now let’s step through a traditional story structure in three acts and see how it changes when examined through a Jungian lens. And that's what this video is about! Although there are three parts to this series, In part one, we move from France to Nova Scotia and eventually Louisiana. *Note: Within the first few minutes of this video, Dr. Barry accidentally says that Poitou, France is located on the Eastern side of France. Hundreds of years ago, there was a distinct territory and culture that developed in North America that was a product of French imperialism, located in what is now modern day Canada. Give us 25 minutes, and we will give you 350 years of history. Many years later as a result of English rule over the region, the Acadians were once again persecuted and forced to leave their homes and travel to many destinations. Several ended up in South Louisiana. Still known as Acadians, they thrived for many years in Louisiana until WWII. As a result of leaving the region to fight in the war, many for the first time met people outside of the Acadian community. The war galvanized the Acadians with Americanism. Now identified as Americans many returned home and slowly left the farms they were raised on to marry individuals outside of the Acadian culture. This led to the current race known as Cajuns. Although Cajuns are located throughout the world now, many still associate South Louisiana with the Cajun culture where the bulk continue to reside. This documentary in no way represents all of the events that helped shape the current Cajun culture. It is rather a synopsis of events that occurred which were part of the evolution of a culture which would become known as Cajun. I am sincerely appreciative to the three teams of multimedia students that contributed to this project. I would also like to thank the academic professionals, historians, trappers, and musicians that graciously contributed to this volume of work. Finally, I would like to thank the Target Corporation which provided the equipment to film and produce the film. My sincere hope is that you gain an appreciation of the Cajun people and that you come to understand the many aspects of the culture that are slowly fading such as; speaking French and living off the land as trappers, fisherman and farmers. The single reached number one on the U.S. Hot 100 Airplay, the Mainstream Top 40 and the Canadian Singles Chart. It also peaked at number three in the Billboard Hot 100, No. 2 on the U.S. Alternative rock chart and number six on the UK Singles Chart.

The song won an Ivor Novello Award in May 1994. Lead vocalist Simon Le Bon later sang the song with Luciano Pavarotti, to help children affected by war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Background

By the early 1990s, Duran Duran's popularity had faded. Their album Liberty had proved a commercial failure, its two singles failing to make a significant showing on British or American charts.

It was not until Capitol leaked "Ordinary World" to a radio station in Jacksonville, Florida in the second half of 1992 that it looked like Duran Duran mania might yet hit again. The single proved so popular that Capitol had to push the US release date up, ultimately releasing it in December.

This is the third installment of my video series on working with the shadow. I HAD intended to finish my series on the shadow today but it turns out there is so much material it will take a bit longer. If you’ve listened to my first two videos (see the links below) then you know that I’m looking at Jung’s conception of the shadow archetype and investigating what we can, as writers, draw from it. I hope you don’t mind, but in the remainder of this series -- while I will still talk about the shadow -- I’m going to broaden my focus and look at the structure of the Hero’s Journey in the context of Jung’s work more broadly. In that light, let’s ask a fundamental question: What is the hero’s goal? The hero is on a journey, so what is his goal? Where is he going? What does he want to achieve? Yes, in every story the hero will have a different goal depending on what the story is. For example, in Star Wars IV, Luke’s goal was to deliver blueprints of the death star to the rebel alliance. In Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark Indie’s goal was to find the Ark of the Covenant and bring it home to the United States so it could be studied. But is there a more general goal, a goal that all hero’s try to fulfill regardless of the specific story they find themselves in? Perhaps. Carl Jung writes: “There are natural transformation processes which simply happen to us …. This "other being" is the other person in ourselves -- that larger and greater personality maturing within us …. This relationship is a mystery to the scientific intellect, because the intellect is accustomed to regard these things unsympathetically. ... It is the representation of a friendship between two men which is simply the outer reflection of an inner fact: it reveals our relationship to that inner friend of the soul into whom Nature herself would like to change us -- that other person who we also are and yet can never attain to completely. We are that pair of Dioscuri, one of whom is mortal and the other immortal, and who, though always together, can never be made completely one. The transformation processes strive to approximate them to one another, but our consciousness is aware of resistances, because the other person seems strange and uncanny, and because we cannot get accustomed to the idea that we are not absolute master in our own house. We should prefer to be always "I" and nothing else. But we are confronted with that inner friend or foe, and whether he is our friend or our foe depends on ourselves.” (Carl Jung, Vol 9 Part 1, The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, papa. 234, page 130) So there’s a lot to unpack there! I’m not a Jungian scholar but I take it that Jung, here, is expressing the thought that we are not just our consciousness, we are not just our Ego, we are also a (sometimes unfelt) Self. I think that the goal of the Jungian Hero’s Journey is for the protagonist to confront that inner friend and get to know them as much as possible. In doing so we will come to know ourselves. Part of this journey, a necessary start to this journey, is integrating -- is shining a light upon -- the parts of ourselves that lie in shadow. Okay, I just wanted to set that up. Now let’s step through a traditional story structure in three acts and see how it changes when examined through a Jungian lens. And that's what this video is about! Although there are three parts to this series, In part one, we move from France to Nova Scotia and eventually Louisiana. *Note: Within the first few minutes of this video, Dr. Barry accidentally says that Poitou, France is located on the Eastern side of France. Poitou is located on the Western side of France*. This was an honest mistake and could not be removed from the film due to technical difficulties. Thank you for your understanding. This documentary covers over 300 years of history concerning the migration and development of modern day Cajuns. Our story starts in Poitou, France where persecution caused a group of French settlers to travel across the ocean to Nova Scotia, Canada. Here they established a new life for themselves and became known as the Acadians. Many years later as a result of English rule over the region, the Acadians were once again persecuted and forced to leave their homes and travel to many destinations. Several ended up in South Louisiana. Still known as Acadians, they thrived for many years in Louisiana until WWII. As a result of leaving the region to fight in the war, many for the first time met people outside of the Acadian community. The war galvanized the Acadians with Americanism. Now identified as Americans many returned home and slowly left the farms they were raised on to marry individuals outside of the Acadian culture. This led to the current race known as Cajuns. Although Cajuns are located throughout the world now, many still associate South Louisiana with the Cajun culture where the bulk continue to reside. This documentary in no way represents all of the events that helped shape the current Cajun culture. It is rather a synopsis of events that occurred which were part of the evolution of a culture which would become known as Cajun. I am sincerely appreciative to the three teams of multimedia students that contributed to this project. I would also like to thank the academic professionals, historians, trappers, and musicians that graciously contributed to this volume of work. Finally, I would like to thank the Target Corporation which provided the equipment to film and produce the film. What on Earth happened to the Acadians, better known in most of the United States as the Cajuns? Hundreds of years ago, there was a distinct territory and culture that developed in North America that was a product of French imperialism, located in what is now modern day Canada. However, after conflicts with the British, their descendants had one of the most dramatic and interesting tales of trials and tribulations seen in any community in the US or Canada. In today's video we're going to be discussing the history of the Acadians and what happened to their modern day descendants, such as the Cajuns, and how and why they ended up where they did, with many of these Acadian refugees ending up all across the globe.
