Plotting basics: The Ordinary World (how to write fiction that sells)
The ordinary world is usually the first chapter of most commercial fiction - it shows the basic status quo and introduces the main character as driven by lack. They have a character flaw or unattainable dream, they feel they are missing something even if they don't know what. It's important to also make them sympathetic to readers quickly, for example by having them defend weaker characters or being picked on by bullies.

How to write fiction that sells (plotting and story architecture based on the hero's journey)
This is the introduction to a video series on writing fiction that sells - after finishing my PhD in Literature, I studied story architecture and began publishing my own novels. I started making a living with my writing in less than a year, by telling strong stories based on universal principles.
My outline is based on the classic hero's journey - I read dozens of books on plotting and boiled everything down into a simpler process that works for most commercial fiction. You can grab a free PDF of my book The Plot Dot, and a Word template I used to outline my novels, on my site.

Crafting a Compelling Ordinary World in Your Story's First Act - Exploring the 27-Chapter Outline
Crafting a Compelling Ordinary World in Your Story's First Act: Exploring the 27-Chapter Outline. The term "ordinary world" gets thrown around a lot. For authors, and writers alike, what goes in this section of your narrative? Yes, we see the protagonist's normal life before the story kicks into gear. Their inciting incident, or, call to adventure is a part of it, plus their reaction. But what can you add to your story's first act that will draw your readers in? We're going to explore The 27 Chapter Outline and look closer at Act 1 Section 1. It's all about working, growing, and rising together, to keep the creative flow growing as we develop "The Write Mindset."

First plot point / point of no return (how to write fiction that sells)
The first plot point or point of no return is when the protagonist is forced onto their adventure - they've already been invited in the inciting incident, but refused the call. Here, something happens that changes everything, and going back and pretending everything is normal is no longer an action. The only way left is forward.

The Inciting Incident / call to adventure (how to write fiction that sells)
The inciting incident is the first major change or event that disrupts the protagonist's ordinary world. Something new, different, unique or remarkable. It should be something unexpected. It can be a literal invitation (like HP receiving the letter from Hogwarts) or something incidental, like an accident (in YA fiction, often the book starts with a death of the parents.)
The inciting incident can also be a peak into a supernatural world or a great conflict - however the protagonist will usually resist the call at first, pretend it didn't happen, go home and try to resume their ordinary life.

TAP014, How to Write a Great Ordinary World Scene | ThE Authorpreneur Podcast
Are you struggling to figure out how to start your novel? Quite often we place much emphasis on the first sentence or paragraph and not to the large scene. In three-act-structure, this scene is referred to as the ordinary world. In this episode, we are going to discuss why this scene is so important and I'll share seven tips to help you write a great ordinary world scene.
Before we dive into this episode, I want to point out a few necessary pieces of information. I'm a thriller writer. By admitting this, I would like to point out that my story structure method reflects this genre. This is the reason I started off with the story hook and not the ordinary world scene. A thriller novel starts off with a crime being committed or with the discovery of a crime. If you're writing a romance, you...

The Final Battle (how to write fiction that sells)
This is the last video in my series on plotting fiction that sells - the final battle is where the protagonists meets the antagonist face to face. The protagonist will usually challenge the antagonist but fail (the antagonist was prepared). There's often a "hero at the mercy of the villain" scene where the good guys are captured and the villain reveals key information. Then the hero gets free and now, with complete knowledge of everything, is able to overcome his adversary.

Thomas J. Bellezza was born in 1978 on Long Island, New York, and is a successful consultant in the entertainment industry. He is known for his speaking engagements, mentoring, and unwavering desire to help others with their creative endeavors and succeed in their careers. He is a student of human behavior and the process of becoming successful. For more than twenty years, he has been an important figure in his field, opening doors and giving people places to learn.
His journey began in the 90’s as an illustrator. From there, his career turned into a ten-year venture with his band TENEbRAE. Since 2007, he has developed multiple paths in his industry: from his music project, Altayon, to performing stand-up comedy, acting, and his career as a writer/author. As a writing consultant, he helps write, outline, and brainstorm story development and narrative fluidity. As a script doctor and story consultant, he works on scripts, books, and novels.
His mission to help educate people has led him to open up a nonprofit venture, Team Rise Together, with the motto of "work together, grow together, and rise together." This mission gives entertainers the chance to work together with other people who share their interests. As a team, these people will help each other improve their skills, learn about the industry, and understand their craft in the field so that they can move up in their careers together.
His debut poetry book, "SHE," was published in 2018 and is holding strong with 4.8 stars on Amazon. Currently, his next two books are in progress. His self-help book is in the hands of fantastic alpha readers, and his first three book fantasy series, "The Maven Wars," is in the outlining stage. In addition to writing, Thomas currently has a number of TV and film scripts in the works at BBR Productions. These projects will be made as part of the Team Rise Together mission.

Christopher Vogler made documentary films as an Air Force officer before studying film production at the University of Southern California, where he encountered the ideas of mythologist Joseph Campbell and observed how they influenced the story design of the first Star Wars movie. He worked as a story consultant in the development departments of 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures and Animation, and Paramount Pictures, and wrote an influential memo on Campbell’s Hero’s Journey concept that led to his involvement in Disney’s Aladdin, The Lion King and Hercules. After the publication of The Writer’s Journey, he had a hand in developing the stories of many productions, including Disney’s remake of 101 Dalmatians, Fox’s Fight Club, Courage Under Fire, Volcano, The Thin Red Line and many others. Vogler lives in Los Angeles, California.

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - http://amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post http://amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - http://amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - http://amzn.to/2u5UnHv

If you're writing a romance, you may want to not have the hook as a separate scene but an element within the ordinary world scene. Once again, before we get started, I would like to point out this episode will contain a few minor spoilers from the thriller novel, Sanctus by Simon Toyne.
This episode is the second instalment of my three-act structure series. If you've just joined me on this podcast then, I will link the previous two episodes, the hook, and three-act structure below. Today, I will focus on the next plot point in the first act. This plot point is the ordinary world.
Thanks for watching!
