Olympism in Action Forum - The Power of the Olympic Truce
Dating back to 776 BC and the Ancient Olympic Games, the Olympic Truce was announced before the Olympic Games. A call to a cessation of any hostilities, it was intended to ensure that the host city of the Olympic Games was able to organise the event in peace and ensure the safe passage of athletes and spectators taking part in the Games.
The Olympic Truce was revived by the United Nations Organisation in 1993. Even under the most tense and volatile of circumstances, the Olympic Truce reaffirms that the Olympic values of peace, solidarity and respect are as important across the world today as they were over 3,000 years ago, when the ancient Olympic Games first took place in Greece.

Thomas Bach said, “We warmly welcome and are very grateful for the overwhelming support of this Olympic Truce resolution by just two abstentions.”
Tony Estanguet said, “Our satisfaction…We want to really thank the states that have publicly expressed their support for the Games, the importance of the Games, and their role in society today. I think this is the most important for us: to feel that a vast majority of countries today want to engage in the Games' success and in the development of the Olympic and Paralympic Games for humanity.”
The IOC President also said, “We had hardly any time after World War Two, with so much confrontation, conflict, and wars that in such a time, this mission of the Olympic movement, of the Olympic Games is even more important than ever, and therefore, you know, we are really overwhelmed by the support expressed by the UN General Assembly.”
Dating back to the ancient Olympic Games in Olympia in 776 BC, the Olympic Truce aims to halt all hostilities, allowing the safe passage and participation of athletes and spectators for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The IOC revived the Olympic Truce in 1992, and is now introduced for every edition of the Games.
The draft resolution for the Olympic Truce for Paris 2024 was formally submitted to the Member States by the Government of France in close collaboration with the IOC, the International Paralympic Committee, and the Organising Committee.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced his support for a global Olympic truce during the Paris Games on Monday.
On the first day of his state visit to France, Xi stated that "As a permanent member of the Security Council (of the United Nations) and as a responsible country, China is ready to work with France to take the Paris Olympics as an opportunity to call for a global truce during the Paris Olympic Games."
The discussions between Xi and French President Emmanuel Macron focused on trade and international relations, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
However, Xi's visit was not without controversy, as students for a Free Tibet displayed a "Free Tibet" banner over his motorcade from a bridge in Paris, while Reporters Without Borders activists protested at the Arc de Triomphe.
"It must be recognized that the Chinese President is not like any other president, he is a press freedom predator. 119 journalists are detained by the Chinese regime," Deputy CEO of Reporters Without Borders, Thibaut Britton said.

Taking the most recent inspiring example of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, this session will highlight how sport and the values of Olympism have the power to unite a fractured world.
