The Baltic languages belong to the Balto-Slavic branch of the Indo-European language family. Baltic languages are spoken by the Balts, mainly in areas extending east and southeast of the Baltic Sea in Northern Europe.
Scholars usually regard them as a single language family divided into two branches: Western Baltic (containing Galindian†, Old Prussian†, & Sudovian†) and Eastern Baltic (containing at least two living languages, Lithuanian, Latvian, and by some counts including Latgalian and Samogitian as separate languages).

In this video, we explore similarities and differences between Lithuanian and Latvian, examining the factors that contribute to their mutual intelligibility. Through engaging language challenges, we aim to showcase the linguistic connections and enhance our understanding of these unique languages.
Latvian and Lithuanian are two remarkable Baltic languages with deep historical roots and unique linguistic features. Latvian is the official language of Latvia, spoken by the majority of the population, while Lithuanian holds the distinction of being one of the oldest Indo-European languages still in use today. Both languages have retained archaic elements from their ancient origins, making them fascinating subjects of linguistic study.
Mutual intelligibility refers to the ability of speakers of closely related languages to understand each other to varying degrees without prior knowledge or extensive exposure.
Although Latvian and Lithuanian share some similarities due to their shared ancestry, they are separate languages with their own distinct grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. While speakers of one language may recognize certain words in the other, the mutual intelligibility between them is limited, hindering effortless communication.
Despite their linguistic differences, Latvian and Lithuanian foster a sense of cultural solidarity in the Baltic region, showcasing the diversity and richness of language within the European continent.

Old Prussian, a West Baltic Language?
In this video you will see who the Prussians were, and how their language related to other languages, what happened to it, and what is being done about it today. This Baltic Language has a remarkable history, and it was the closest language to the original Indo-European Language left in Europe, which in itself is quite remarkable.

Frozen-Let It Go Baltic Prussian/Old Prussian Language (Chorus)
Country: Prussia
Singer: Zahra Indah (zahraindah2985)
note: not full
Old Prussian was a Western Baltic language belonging to the Balto-Slavic branch of the Indo-European languages, once spoken by the Old Prussians, the Baltic peoples of the Prussian region. The language is called Old Prussian to avoid confusion with the German dialects of Low Prussian and High Prussian and with the adjective Prussian as it relates to the later German state. Old Prussian began to be written down in the Latin alphabet in about the 13th century, and a small amount of literature in the language survives.

Baltic Prussian was a Western Baltic language once spoken by the Old Prussians, the Baltic peoples of the Prussian region. The language is called Old Prussian to avoid confusion with the German dialects of Low Prussian and High Prussian and with the adjective Prussian as it relates to the later German state. Old Prussian began to be written down in the Latin alphabet in about the 13th century, and a small amount of literature in the language survives.
In addition to Prussia proper, the original territory of the Old Prussians might have included eastern parts of Pomerelia (some parts of the region east of the Vistula River). The language might have also been spoken much further east and south in what became Polesia and part of Podlasie, with the conquests by Rus and Poles starting in the 10th century and the German colonisation of the area that began in the 12th century
Old Prussian was closely related to the other extinct Western Baltic languages, namely Curonian, Galindian[5] and Sudovian. It is related to the Eastern Baltic languages such as Lithuanian and Latvian, and more distantly related to Slavic. Compare the words for "land": Old Prussian semmē, Russian: земля́ (zemljá), Latvian: zeme and Lithuanian: žemė.
Old Prussian contained loanwords from Slavic languages (e.g., Old Prussian curtis "hound", like Lithuanian kùrtas and Latvian kur̃ts, comes from Slavic (compare Ukrainian: хорт, khort; Polish: chart; Czech: chrt)), as well as a few borrowings from Germanic, including from Gothic (e.g., Old Prussian ylo "awl" as with Lithuanian ýla, Latvian īlens) and from Scandinavian languages.

In the very first Spring
Sun had gotten up early
Moon had separated
Moon had been walking around alone
He made love to the Morning Star
Thunder got greatly enraged
And cut him in half:

Why have you made love to the Morning Star
And have been walking around all nigh alone?

Perhaps you've seen my father, mother?

That's where your father, mother
Are making wedding to your sister.

Sēn wippins ērgi upikkans.
As enlīzusi na uppins
As enlīzusi na uppins
Pra stans wissans rōzis wippins.
As ebtīnka māldan waikellin
Jāntin na dēiwas zirgellin.
- Ai waikellis raiterellis
Anga tu widāi tāwan mūtin?
- Maldāi tu māise merguzzi
Eīs tu ēn Pagārbas tāutan
Stwen twāise tāwiks mutrīka
Erlānge sestrīkai wesselin.
Tekstas į senąją Prūsų kalbą išverstas iš Rytprūsiuose Liudviko Rėzos išleisto lietuvininkų liaudies dainų rinkinio 84-tosios dainos:
Žemynėle, žiedkelėle,
Kur sodysiu rožių šakelę?
Ant aukšto kalnelio,
Prie jūrių , prie marelių.
Žemynėle, žiedkelėle,
Kur rasiu tėvą, močiutę,
Aš prastumta vargdienutė?
Eik ant aukšto kalnelio,
Prie jūrių, prie marelių!
Iš rožių kelmačio
Užaugo didis medatis,
Šakos iki debesėlių
Per tas rožių šakeles.
Ir sutikau jauną bernytį
Ant Dievo žirgyčio.
Ai bernyti, raitelyti,
Ar neregėjai tėvą, močiutę
Sesytei svodbą kelia.
Nuėjus į pakalnę:
Lab' ryt', labą dien', tėtuti,
Lab' ryt', labą dien', močiute,
Kam mane mažą prastūmėt
Į svetimus žmoneles?
Užaugau didė mergatė;
Viena radau lopšytėlį,
Kur džiaugiaus kūdikėlė.

Ištrauka apie deivę Žemyną iš Algirdo ir Aurikos Selenių animacijos "LIETUVIŲ MITOLOGINIAI DIEVAI" (2007) http://animacijosstudija.jimdo.com/
Daina iš grupės Kūlgrinda albumo "Prūsų giesmės" (2005)
TRANSLATION:
- Dear Žemyna, the raiser of blooms,
Where shall I plant the rose twigs?
- Look at a tall hill,
By the sea, by the lagoon.
- Dear Žemyna, the raiser of blooms,
Where shall I find father, mother?
- Go to the tall hill,
By the sea, by the lagoon.
Look, the rose twigs -
They've turned into a large tree
Its branches reach into the clouds.
- I climbed up to the clouds
Through those rose branches.
I met there a young boy
Who was riding the god's horses.
- Dear boy, you rider
Perhaps you've seen my father, mother?
- My young girl
Go to the underworld
That's where your father, mother
Are making wedding to your sister.
FULL LYRICS:

note: not full
Old Prussian was a Western Baltic language belonging to the Balto-Slavic branch of the Indo-European languages, once spoken by the Old Prussians, the Baltic peoples of the Prussian region. The language is called Old Prussian to avoid confusion with the German dialects of Low Prussian and High Prussian and with the adjective Prussian as it relates to the later German state. Old Prussian began to be written down in the Latin alphabet in about the 13th century, and a small amount of literature in the language survives.
