What on Earth happened to the Prussians? A once proud and powerful nation, now relegated to the European history textbooks of 2nd grade Texas curriculum. Who exactly were the Prussians, and what was their impact on European history and their relation to the Germans, Poles, Russians and other European nations?
Today we're going to answer all these questions, while taking a look at the rise and fall of Prussia, and who exactly their people were. Thanks for watching!

Baltic Prussian was a Western Baltic language once spoken by the Old Prussians, the Baltic peoples of the Prussian region. The language is called Old Prussian to avoid confusion with the German dialects of Low Prussian and High Prussian and with the adjective Prussian as it relates to the later German state. Old Prussian began to be written down in the Latin alphabet in about the 13th century, and a small amount of literature in the language survives.
In addition to Prussia proper, the original territory of the Old Prussians might have included eastern parts of Pomerelia (some parts of the region east of the Vistula River). The language might have also been spoken much further east and south in what became Polesia and part of Podlasie, with the conquests by Rus and Poles starting in the 10th century and the German colonisation of the area that began in the 12th century
Old Prussian was closely related to the other extinct Western Baltic languages, namely Curonian, Galindian[5] and Sudovian. It is related to the Eastern Baltic languages such as Lithuanian and Latvian, and more distantly related to Slavic. Compare the words for "land": Old Prussian semmē, Russian: земля́ (zemljá), Latvian: zeme and Lithuanian: žemė.
Old Prussian contained loanwords from Slavic languages (e.g., Old Prussian curtis "hound", like Lithuanian kùrtas and Latvian kur̃ts, comes from Slavic (compare Ukrainian: хорт, khort; Polish: chart; Czech: chrt)), as well as a few borrowings from Germanic, including from Gothic (e.g., Old Prussian ylo "awl" as with Lithuanian ýla, Latvian īlens) and from Scandinavian languages.

This video presents the history and grammar structure of THE PRUSSIAN LANGUAGE (PRŪSISKA BILĀ / German = ALTPREUSSISCHE SPRACHE) was not the language of the Germanized "Prussians" so famous as the first great German state that unified Germany in the 19th century, but rather a relative of Lithuanian and Latvian, belonging to the Baltic languages, and Old Prussia was invaded and Germanized by the Order of Teutonic Knights in the Baltic Crusades of the 12th century and ended up extinct, buried by Germanic rule over the centuries, until its last speakers died around 1730. The only literary work in existence today in the language Old Prussian 'and a Lutheran catechism of 1545 which gives us a few thousand words with German translation, otherwise few records of this language, which never had abundant literary expression, exist today. On the MOPC Linguistics Channel you can see a summary of what we know and what could be reconstructed of this mysterious extinct language of Central Europe. Prussian was an SVO language, with prepositions and 3 grammatical genders (masculine, neuter and feminine) and two numbers (singular and plural) and a declension with four cases (simpler than Lithuanian and Latvian) and a verb conjugation as far as is known relatively simple, with present, simple past and a periphrastic perfect and future, with auxiliary + past participle, which curiously agrees with the subject's gender.

Why have you made love to the Morning Star
And have been walking around all nigh alone?

The story of Germany's founding is a tale of complex alliances, powerful leaders, and revolutionary movements that reshaped Europe. Prior to unification, German-speaking regions were divided into a collection of independent kingdoms, principalities, and duchies, loosely connected under the German Confederation. The push for a unified German state began to intensify in the early 19th century, driven by growing nationalism and dissatisfaction with fragmented leadership.
In 1848, the revolutionary spirit swept across Europe, including Germany. Inspired by calls for liberty, democracy, and national unity, uprisings erupted across the German states. Although these revolutions ultimately failed to achieve immediate unification, they planted seeds for change. Leaders like Otto von Bismarck later harnessed these sentiments, using strategic wars and diplomacy to consolidate the German states under Prussian leadership. By 1871, following victories in wars against Denmark, Austria, and France, the German Empire was proclaimed, with King Wilhelm I of Prussia as its emperor. The path to German unity marked a turning point in European history and set the stage for both political and military changes that would impact the world.
