North American Airlines, Inc., was an Americanairline with its headquarters at the HLH Building in Peachtree City, Georgia in Greater Atlanta, USA. Prior to May 2008, it operated scheduled international services from the USA to Africa and Guyana. Later it operated domestic and international charter services and wet lease services. Its main aircraft and maintenance base was Tampa International Airport.
History
North American Airlines was a subsidiary of Global Aviation Holdings, Inc., formerly Global Aero Logistics, Inc. Unlike the other airlines that are or were a part of Global Aviation, ATA Airlines (now defunct) and World Airways (now defunct), North American was founded after airline deregulation in the United States.
North American was established in 1989 and began operations on January 20, 1990. It was founded by Dan McKinnon, former head of the then-Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), mainly to provide feeder services to El Al gateways in North America, and to provide services for Club Med. The cooperation with El Al lasted until the early 2000s when El Al signed a codeshare agreement with Delta Air Lines and began shifting some of its feeder business to Delta instead, while also increasing the use of its own equipment in intra-US travel. El Al held a 24.9% stake in the airline until it sold it back to McKinnon in July 2003. The airline was acquired by World Air Holdings in April 2005.
American Airlines is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance, and coordinates fares, services, and scheduling with British Airways, Iberia, and Finnair in the transatlantic market and with Japan Airlines in the transpacific market. Regional service is operated by independent and subsidiary carriers under the brand name American Eagle.
On 22 December 2009, an American AirlinesBoeing 737-800, operating American Airlines Flight 331 (Washington, D.C.–Miami–Kingston, Jamaica) and carrying 148 passengers and six crew, overran the runway on landing at Kingston in poor weather. The plane continued on the ground outside the airport perimeter and broke apart on the beach, causing injuries.
Factors contributing to the crash include the speed of the aircraft upon landing and the plane touching down more than 4,000 feet from the start of the runway. Contributing factors included American Airlines' failure to provide training on tailwind landings, and the FAA's failure to implement the NTSB's previous recommendation, following a previous fatal accident involving a tailwind landing attempt, that the FAA require commercial operators to train flight crews on tailwind landings.
Aircraft
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737-823, registration N977AN. The aircraft had manufacturer's serial number 29550 and made its first flight on 30 November 2001. The aircraft made its first flights under registration N1786B and was delivered to American Airlines on 20 December 2001.
Fifteen minutes into the flight, the hijackers injured at least three people (possibly killing one), forcibly breached the cockpit, and overpowered the captain and first officer. Atta, an al-Qaeda member and licensed commercial pilot, took over the controls. Air-traffic controllers noticed the flight was in distress when the crew was no longer responding. They realized the flight had been hijacked when Mohamed Atta's announcements for passengers were transmitted to air traffic control. On board, flight attendantsAmy Sweeney and Betty Ong contacted American Airlines, and provided information about the hijackers and injuries to passengers and crew.
North America covers an area of about 24,709,000 square kilometers (9,540,000 square miles), about 16.5% of the earth's land area and about 4.8% of its total surface.
North America is the third largest continent by area, following Asia and Africa, and the fourth by population after Asia, Africa, and Europe.
In 2013, its population was estimated at nearly 565million people in 23 independent states, or about 7.5% of the world's population, if nearby islands (most notably the Caribbean) are included.
North America was reached by its first human populations during the last glacial period, via crossing the Bering land bridge. The so-called Paleo-Indian period is taken to have lasted until about 10,000 years ago (the beginning of the Archaic or Meso-Indian period). The Classic stage spans roughly the 6th to 13th centuries.
The Pre-Columbian era ended with the arrival of European settlers during the Age of Discovery and the Early Modern period. Present-day cultural and ethnic patterns reflect different kind of interactions between European colonists, indigenous peoples, African slaves and their descendants. European influences are strongest in the northern parts of the continent while indigenous and African influences are relatively stronger in the south. Because of the history of colonialism, most North Americans speak English, Spanish or French and societies and states commonly reflect Western traditions.
The North American Plate is a tectonic plate covering most of North America, Greenland, Cuba, the Bahamas, and parts of Iceland and the Azores. It extends eastward to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and westward to the Chersky Range in eastern Siberia. The plate includes both continental and oceanic crust. The interior of the main continental landmass includes an extensive granitic core called a craton. Along most of the edges of this craton are fragments of crustal material called terranes, accreted to the craton by tectonic actions over the long span of geologic time. It is thought that much of North America west of the Rocky Mountains is composed of such terranes.

American Airlines is the World’s biggest airline. But my recent experience was MEH 😐…Is American the WORST of 3 major US airlines? Here’s my story…
After visiting the airplane graveyard in Teruel, I went to Barcelona, ready to fly to the US. I’ve got a great award redemption ticket from American Airlines AAdvantage flying from Barcelona to Las Vegas via London and Dallas. It cost just 57,500 miles + $80 tax.
On my departure day, British Airways canceled the Barcelona to London flight and my travel was disrupted and delayed for 24 hours. It’s really hard to find staff to help when exceptions happen…but I managed to rebook and received food and hotel voucher.
The next day I finally reached London Heathrow and got on the American Airlines B777-300/ER. The entire AA premium experience was disappointing to say the least. Welcome drink came in plastic cup, disposable headsets, poorly presented food… There was hardly anything stands out on this flight other than the lie-flat seat. There were just 11 flight attendants onboard compared to the usual 14-15 on B777-300/ER……The workload was much higher with the shortage of staff….so the cabin crew tried to hurry the service and get more rest once everything was done.
American Airlines is not known for its service standard but for its extensive network and loyalty program….Have you flown American Airlines on long-haul international flight? How was your experience?

Air Crash Investigation: American Airlines 331 || Aviation Accidents explained video
American Airlines Flight 331 was scheduled for its passenger flight to Norman Manley International Airport Jamaica with the stopover at Miami.
The flight took off from Washington and landed at Miami without any notable events.
20:22
Flight 331 departed Miami on a scheduled flight.
During the approach briefing, they decided on the straight in approach to runway 12. They had 2 options for landing. Straight in and land on 12 or circle to land on runway 30. They decided to land on 12 with a tailwind, rather than doing a circling approach to runway 30 with a low ceiling.
22:14
The Approach controller cleared the flight to maintain four thousand feet, and on reaching KEYNO cleared for a straight-in ILS approach runway 12, and advised that the wind was now 320 degrees at 15 knots.

The crew acknowledged and the Approach controller asked if the crew had understood that the wind was 320 degrees at 15 knots, asking them if they were still able to make a straight-in approach to runway 12. The crew responded that they had received the wind and could make the straight-in approach to runway 12.
The captain maintained visual contact with the runway throughout the approach. They were still receiving rain.
The first officer was monitoring the tailwind and the tailwind component was dropping as they descended to the final approach fix.
At about 550 feet, the captain disconnected the autopilot while leaving the autothrottle engaged.
The localizer of the ILS runway 12 was offset three degrees north of the runway track, so it did not bring the landing traffic to the touchdown point, so the pilots using the ILS had to transition to approach and make a very slight left turn to line up with the runway centerline.
At about 500 feet, the captain aligned the aircraft with the runway centerline. The aircraft made a shallow right turn from the ILS localizer then a left turn to the track to the runway, and continued the approach, crossing the runway threshold at about 70 feet RA.
The aircraft touchdown at 4,100 feet down the runway.
The spoilers deployed on the first touchdown. Then the aircraft bounced once and landed again 200 feet down the runway. The plane was 4,600 feet down the runway. Then the crew activated autobrake 3. The first officer applied the reverse thrust but the plane was not slowing down.
The captain overrode the auto brake system, applying maximum manual braking on the brake pedals, and selected maximum reverse thrust. He was joined by the first officer simultaneously applying maximum manual braking on the brake pedals.
The aircraft exited the runway at 62 knots ground speed and came to rest on the sandy and rocky shoreline area.
The cockpit was dark, and the crew completed the emergency evacuation checklist. There was no post-crash fire. The aircraft was destroyed, its fuselage broken into three sections, while the left landing gear collapsed. The right engine and landing gear were torn off, the left wingtip was badly damaged and the right-wing fuel tanks were ruptured, leaking jet fuel onto the beach sand.
One hundred and thirty-four passengers suffered a minor injury, while 14 were seriously injured. The aircraft was damaged beyond economic repair and was written off.
Investigation
The investigation was done by Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority. According to investigators the most probable cause of this accident was that the aircraft touched down 4,100 feet beyond the threshold, and could not be stopped on the remaining runway. The pilots decision to land on a wet runway in a 14 knot tailwind, their reduced situational awareness, and failure to conduct a go-around after the aircraft floated longer than usual contributed to the accident.

In this exciting video, we're diving into five quick tips that will enhance your experience when flying with American Airlines.
