The Museum of Islamic Art, in Cairo, Egypt, is considered one of the greatest in the world, with its exceptional collection of rare woodwork and plaster artefacts, as well as metal, ceramic, glass, crystal, and textile objects of all periods, from all over the Islamic world.
In recent years, the museum has displayed about 2,500 artefacts in 25 galleries, but it houses more than 102,000 objects, with the remainder in storage. The collection includes rare manuscripts of the Qur'an, with some calligraphy written in silver ink, on pages with elaborate borders.
The Museum has conducted archaeological excavations in the Fustat area and has organized a number of national and international exhibitions. The museum closed for renovations in 2003, and re-opened 8 years later, in August 2010. The restoration cost nearly US$10 million.
History
Although recognition of Pharonic art was signaled in Cairo by the establishment in 1858 of the Department of Antiquities and the Egyptian Museum, the appreciation of Arab and Islamic Art lagged behind. The Khedive Ismail approved a proposal to establish a Museum of Arab Art in the Courtyard of the Mosque of Baibars, but this was not carried out until 1880, when Khedive Tawfiq ordered the Ministry of Endowments (ar: الاوقاف - Awqaf) to set it up.
The Museum of Islamic Art (Arabic:متحف الفن الإسلامي, matḥaf al-fann al-islāmī) is a museum located on the Corniche in the Qatari capital Doha. The iconic building was designed by architect I. M. Pei.
Facilities
A 280,000 m² park is located behind the main building. Facilities inside the 5-storey museum include a gift shop, a library, classrooms and a 200-seat theater. There are also prayer rooms and ablution facilities inside the museum building for all Muslim visitors. Other facilities include IDAM, a high class restaurant offering French Mediterranean cuisine with Arabic elements.
Occupying a total area of 45,000 m2, the museum is located on an artificial peninsula overlooking the south end of Doha Bay. Construction by Baytur Construction Co. (Turkey) was completed in 2006, but the museum's interior was subjected to a variety of changes thereafter. The museum celebrated its VIP opening on November 22, 2008, and opened to the general public on December 8, 2008.
Egyptians today often refer to Cairo as Maṣr ([mɑsˤɾ], مصر), the Egyptian Arabic pronunciation of the name for Egypt itself, emphasizing the city's continued role in Egyptian influence. Its official name is القاهرةal-Qāhirah, means literally: "the Defeater", in reference to the fact that the planet Mars ("Al Najm Al Qahir") was rising at the time when the city was founded as well as, "the Vanquisher"; "the Conqueror"; Egyptian Arabic pronunciation:[elqɑ(ː)ˈheɾɑ], "the Defeater" or, " "the Victorious" (al-Qahira) in reference to the much awaited Caliph al-Mu'izz li Din Allah who arrived from the old Fatimid Ifriqiyan capital of Mahdia in 973 to the city. The Egyptian name for Cairo is said to be: Khere-Ohe, meaning: "The Place of Combat", supposedly, in reference to a battle which took place between the Gods Seth and Horus. Sometimes the city is informally also referred to as كايروKayro[ˈkæjɾo]. It is also called Umm ad-Dunya, meaning "the mother of the world".
Apple Garamond (1983), designed to replace Motter Tektura in the Apple logo. Not included on Macs in a user-available form.
New York (1984, by Susan Kare), a serif font. Converted to ttf by Charles Bigelow but no longer installed on Macs. Only a roman style, without complementary italic.
