China's President grabbed by security as he almost tumbles off stage
The Russian President was mingling in a group on the stage in Saint Petersburg when the reaction of the crowd to Xi's near-miss saw him turn around quickly and peer into the crowd (left and right). Armenian President Nikol Pashinyan was also spooked by the noise of the crowd, as the security did well to stop the Chinese President (inset with Putin) face-planting the ground.

The National Assembly has entered its sixth day of an ongoing parliamentary audit.
Today, the public safety and security ministry was in the hot seat.... over its lax response to a recent string of accidents.
Our Park Ji-won has more.
Representatives from the two main rival political camps criticized the government′s poor initial handling of a fishing boat accident that left over a dozen people dead and six missing when it capsized earlier this month.
The lawmakers grilled the nation′s public safety minister for failing to quickly send in a special rescue team,... which arrived on site roughly six hours after the request was made.
The ministry′s annual report to the president earlier this year states that rescue crews should arrive on site within 30 minutes for accidents on land... and within an hour for those at sea.
″There is a precondition to the ′golden hour′ rule. We assumed that special sea-rescue teams were set up for both the East and West Sea. But we still didn′t have rescue teams on both seas, and we needed to rely on helicopters to send the teams to the accident site. Due to inclement weather, the helicopters couldn′t operate that day and the rescue team had to get there by motor vehicle.″
Lawmakers criticized the government for its lax response... and pointed to other problems during the initial response,... including the accusation that officials did not give serious enough consideration to the situation when they first noticed the boat′s positioning signals were missing.
″Why was the Ministry of Public Safety and Security launched last year? Wasn′t it to prevent another tragedy like the Sewol-ho ferry disaster from ever happening again? But the insensitivity to safety is still rampant.″
Another point of contention was the lack of fire and rescue gear for the nation′s firefighters.
″Firefighters have to share their uniforms, as there aren′t enough of them, and they buy gloves with their own money,... which is a threat to their safety.″
The lawmaker continued by saying that,... although the government plans to spend over 5-hundred million U.S. dollars by 2017 for fire and rescue gear,... a stronger system for monitoring the procurement process is needed due to the chronic corruption at the nation′s fire stations.
PARK Ji-won, Arirang News.

Thanks to a historically unprecedented system of police control, transnational mobility from European communist states is probably the best documented social phenomenon of its kind and a unique experiment in the limits of the state control of mobility.
This lecture presented some of the conclusions of Stola’s research project on migrations from communist Poland. These migrations underwent a marked evolution, from the movement of millions of people in the 1940s; to almost nil under the non-exit policy of the early 1950s; to the reemergence and gradual expansion of transnational mobility, especially within the Soviet bloc, between 1956 and 1980; to mass population flows in the late 1980s. Each trip outside the bloc, and indeed each trip abroad for most of the duration of communist rule, required applying for a permit from the Security Service. This procedure resulted in an archival collection of passport files that fills some 60 kilometers of shelf space. Despite the constraints, more than two million people eventually left Poland for good, and temporary movements occurred on a mass scale, pioneering forms of mobility that continued well after 1989.
This lecture also shed light on the key factors and currents of migration in communist Poland, as well as the evolution of the migration regime, from early imitation of the Soviet model to its eventual implosion.
Dariusz Stola is Professor of History at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Former Director of the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.
Ranabir Samaddar, Distinguished Chair in Migration and Forced Migration Studies, Calcutta Research Group, Kolkata, India, provided the comment.
Ludger Hagedorn, IWM Permanent Fellow, moderated the evening.

On 10 December, EFPI/ICDS together with Sinopsis organised a high-level workshop “CCP Influence in the Nordic-Baltic Region”, the fourth part of the international series “Mapping China’s Footprint in the World”.
New findings of empirical research were presented, shedding new light on the key role the party-state’s security and intelligence apparatus plays in the party’s influence operations in Europe and beyond. A dedicated panel focused on Scandinavia and the Baltic states, including the presentation of new reports surveying CCP influence in Sweden and Estonia based on extensive empirical research with Chinese-language sources. The activities of specific influence agencies, notably in the security system, were discussed in another panel presenting new research on Italy, Poland and international law enforcement cooperation.
00:00:00 Opening remarks
- Dr Kristi Raik, Director of EFPI at the ICDS
- Dr Martin Hála, Director of Sinopsis
00:10:30 Opening panel: The extraterritorial projection of PRC state security
The research and policy communities’ attention on CCP influence operations has recently focused on their manifestation as élite capture and discourse engineering activity, carried out by propaganda, united front and foreign affairs organs and their fronts. The panel will discuss new research highlighting the external operations of the PRC’s security apparatus, including the previously under researched intelligence involvement in propaganda and united front work.
- Dr Martin Hála, Director of Sinopsis and Sinologist with Charles University
- Alex Joske, Independent Researcher
- Dr Matthew D. Johnson, Visiting Fellow, Hoover Institution
01:14:16 Panel 1: Influence operations as a multi-system effort
No single party, state or military agency monopolises the CCP’s external influence work. Rather, each major system composing the CCP-led bureaucracy includes organs and fronts active in influence work abroad. This panel will present three new studies that contribute to a multi-system understanding of party-state actors and their proxies, detailing their interactions with specific locales and targets in the democratic world. In addition to influence agencies in the CCP foreign affairs, propaganda and united front systems, the studies highlight the role of organs in the economic system, notably the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), as well as security organs.
- Laura Harth, Campaign Director, Safeguard Defenders
- Łukasz Sarek, China Market Analyst
- Filip Jirouš, Researcher, Sinopsis
- Dr Ralph Weber, Associate Professor, European Global Studies at the University of Basel
02:42:00 Panel 2: The Nordic-Baltic region
The multi-system nature of CCP influence work manifests itself in the party-state’s operations to co-opt policy-making élites in Scandinavia and the Baltic states. The workshop’s concluding panel will present new studies on influence operations in Sweden and Estonia, as well as insights on the recent evolution of Lithuania’s relationship with China and Taiwan.
- Pär Nyrén, Independent Researcher
- Justina Razumaitė, Lecturer, Vilnius University
- Frank Jüris, Research Fellow, EFPI at the ICDS

Lt. Col. (2016) Waldemar Kruszyński, born 1928.
He joined the Home Army in March 1944 in Milanów (Radzyń Podlaski County, Home Army Lublin Circuit). In the organization, he used the codenames Kruszynka (mite) and Warszawiak (Warsawer). He was a liaison officer and messenger for the commander of the Milanów Home Army Outpost, Lt. Piotr Waszczuk, codename Rola. He took part in the concentration of troops intending to aid Warsaw.
In May 1945, he arrived in Stargard Szczeciński, where he and other former members of the Home Army founded an underground organization called “Pomeranian Battalion of the Home Army – Youth Group.” The group was headed by Czesław Hołub AKA Jan Skura, codenames Żbik (wildcat) and Huczny (thunderous), through whom the organization had contact with the structures of Home Army Resistance (ROAK) and Freedom and Independence (WiN) (the Atlas of the Polish independence underground classifies it as an independence youth organization). As part of this group, he used the codenames Kruszyna (mite) and 13.
Thanks to the fact that his sister was at the time the head of the District Office of Information and Propaganda in Stargard, he was able to gain information about the functioning of local power structures. Among other things, he managed to obtain blank forms stamped by the Ministry of Public Security, which were used in the organization's ongoing activities.
He took part in two successful actions to obtain weapons: on the owner of a mill near Stargard in January 1946 and on the Citizens' Militia (MO) post in Darc in early February 1946. In February 1946, members of the group, threatened with arrest, took refuge in the surrounding forests. After the group ceased its organized activities in February–March 1946, he made his way to Milanówek near Warsaw, where he went into hiding.
In February 1947, he disclosed himself to the Provincial Office for Public Security (WUBP) in Warsaw.

In February 1947, he disclosed himself to the Provincial Office for Public Security (WUBP) in Warsaw.

French security officials detained by Israeli police in diplomatic incident in Jerusalem
Israeli police briefly detained two French security officials in a diplomatic incident that prompted the cancellation of a local visit by France's foreign minister.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot had planned to go to the French-owned Eleona church compound in Jerusalem during a visit to the region attempting to calm tensions in the region.
However, he said that the compound visit was called off "because Israeli security forces entered with weapons, without prior French authorisation, without agreeing to leave today."
Speaking at the scene, Barrot called the situation "unacceptable" and said that it's "likely to weaken the ties” between France and Israel.
