Military–industrial complex
The military–industrial complex (MIC), or military–industrial–congressional complex, comprises the policy and monetary relationships which exist between legislators, national armed forces, and the arms industry that supports them. These relationships include political contributions, political approval for military spending, lobbying to support bureaucracies, and oversight of the industry. It is a type of iron triangle. The term is most often used in reference to the system behind the military of the United States, where it gained popularity after its use in the farewell address of President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 17, 1961, though the term is applicable to any country with a similarly developed infrastructure. In 2011, the United States spent more on its military than the next 13 nations combined.
The term is sometimes used more broadly to include the entire network of contracts and flows of money and resources among individuals as well as corporations and institutions of the defense contractors, The Pentagon, the Congress and executive branch.

Shortly after becoming president, Dwight Eisenhower claimed that “every gun made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies theft from those who hunger and are not fed, are cold and not clothed.”
Eight years later, Eisenhower warned Americans to “guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence by the military-industrial complex,” which he defined as the “conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry.”
In the 1930s, Smedley Butler explained how the military subsidized private companies, but it wasn’t until the Second World War, Eisenhower noted, that America developed “a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions.”
So how did this come about?
After Germany invaded Poland, President Franklin Roosevelt convinced Congress to approve his cash-and-carry program to sell arms to France and Britain. The following year, he replaced cash and carry with Lend-Lease, which “loaned” weapons to cash-strapped allies. Lend-Lease established the precedent of American subsidization of foreign armies.
Upon joining the war in 1941, the US government urged patriots to enlist in the “battle for production.” Propaganda reminded Americans that “production wins wars,” and heroic images of factory workers likened weapons manufacturing to military service.
FDR’s wartime policies mirrored his earlier New Deal, based on the ideas of economist John Maynard Keynes. During recessions, Keynes believed, governments should stimulate demand by printing money to spend on public works. FDR applied this formula to his New Deal programs, but after nine years, the economy remained in shambles.
The war allowed FDR to shift to what’s known as military Keynesianism. Because inflationary military spending artificially boosts GDP (gross domestic product) and military enlistment reduces unemployment, military Keynesianism produced the wartime prosperity myth. Many people believe the war ended the Great Depression, despite the country’s facing shortages of basic goods, such as sugar and butter.
Eisenhower understood the problem. “The cost of one modern heavy bomber,” he said, could pay for thirty schools, two power plants, two hospitals, fifty miles of highway, or half a million bushels of wheat. But the arms industry had become a fixture of the American economy. In an early draft of his farewell address, Eisenhower described this as the “military-industrial-congressional complex.”
Political scientists call this the iron triangle of connected interests. Congress passes legislation to benefit an interest group—military contractors—in return for political support. The interest group lobbies Congress on behalf of a bureaucracy—the military establishment—in exchange for special treatment. And the bureaucracy received significant increases in its own funding to administer federal policy. This dynamic has resulted in annual military expenditures of $800 billion—that’s more than the next nine largest military budgets combined.
The military-industrial complex made America the de facto arms dealer for the world, and the US military presence grew to having seven hundred military bases across eighty countries. The military-industrial complex also allowed America to fight a new kind of war by funneling weapons to foreign soldiers to fight what are known as proxy wars.

America has a homelessness crisis as record numbers of people are ending up on the streets of a few concentrated city centers. Cities are spending billions of dollars on failing projects to try and solve this problem which has attracted a growing list of companies happy to provide their services… for a price. Helping the homeless has become a lucrative business with multimillion-dollar government contracts awarded every day.
but if there is so much money to be made, do these companies really want a long-term fix?
According to a report by the consulting firm McKinsey and Company, the annual budget for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority rose from sixty-three million dollars [$63,000,000] in 2015 to eight hundred and eight million dollars [$808,000,000] in 2022, a thirteen HUNDRED percent increase in just seven [7] years… And what did the hardworking taxpayers of Los Angeles get for their money?... the number of homeless people went UP by 56%.
Ignoring for a moment that everybody deserves the right to affordable comfortable shelter, there is something not quiet adding up here. A closer look at individual programs like the “Inside Safe” homelessness reduction policy doesn’t make it much better. The idea of this program was to have social workers offer hotel rooms to homeless individuals while they sought out longer-term housing arrangements. Data collected by the city and compiled by local news outlet the center square found that the plan had cost two hundred and fifty MILLION dollars [$250,000,000] over just one year.
The program only served one thousand four hundred and sixty-three individuals which works out to be seventeen thousand dollars [$17,000] per individual, per MONTH. That is over two hundred thousand dollars [$204,000] every year been spent on ONE individual in ONE program in just ONE city in America. So where is all this money going? and at what point would it just be easier to give homeless people checks for three times the national salary? Well, there are three reasons why cities across America and the rest of the world are spending more money than ever on this problem while not making it any better.

Shortly after becoming president, Dwight Eisenhower claimed that “every gun made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies theft from those who hunger and are not fed, are cold and not clothed.”
Eight years later, Eisenhower warned Americans to “guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence by the military-industrial complex,” which he defined as the “conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry.”
In the 1930s, Smedley Butler explained how the military subsidized private companies, but it wasn’t until the Second World War, Eisenhower noted, that America developed “a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions.”
So how did this come about?
After Germany invaded Poland, President Franklin Roosevelt convinced Congress to approve his cash-and-carry program to sell arms to France and Britain. The following year, he replaced cash and carry with Lend-Lease, which “loaned” weapons to cash-strapped allies. Lend-Lease established the precedent of American subsidization of foreign armies.
Upon joining the war in 1941, the US government urged patriots to enlist in the “battle for production.” Propaganda reminded Americans that “production wins wars,” and heroic images of factory workers likened weapons manufacturing to military service.
FDR’s wartime policies mirrored his earlier New Deal, based on the ideas of economist John Maynard Keynes. During recessions, Keynes believed, governments should stimulate demand by printing money to spend on public works. FDR applied this formula to his New Deal programs, but after nine years, the economy remained in shambles.
The war allowed FDR to shift to what’s known as military Keynesianism. Because inflationary military spending artificially boosts GDP (gross domestic product) and military enlistment reduces unemployment, military Keynesianism produced the wartime prosperity myth. Many people believe the war ended the Great Depression, despite the country’s facing shortages of basic goods, such as sugar and butter.
Eisenhower understood the problem. “The cost of one modern heavy bomber,” he said, could pay for thirty schools, two power plants, two hospitals, fifty miles of highway, or half a million bushels of wheat. But the arms industry had become a fixture of the American economy. In an early draft of his farewell address, Eisenhower described this as the “military-industrial-congressional complex.”
Political scientists call this the iron triangle of connected interests. Congress passes legislation to benefit an interest group—military contractors—in return for political support. The interest group lobbies Congress on behalf of a bureaucracy—the military establishment—in exchange for special treatment. And the bureaucracy received significant increases in its own funding to administer federal policy. This dynamic has resulted in annual military expenditures of $800 billion—that’s more than the next nine largest military budgets combined.
The military-industrial complex made America the de facto arms dealer for the world, and the US military presence grew to having seven hundred military bases across eighty countries. The military-industrial complex also allowed America to fight a new kind of war by funneling weapons to foreign soldiers to fight what are known as proxy wars.

The widely held belief in the existence of a "military industrial complex" is false and has not been true since 1993. The concept is more of a cognitive impediment than a reality. Starting from Eisenhower's 1961 farewell address, I trace the evolution of defense and technology industries, highlighting their consolidation and the significant reduction in U.S. defense spending as a percentage of GDP since the Cold War. Then I contrast the profits of defense companies with those of big tech, pharmaceutical, and consumer product companies to demonstrate that defense contracting is not as lucrative or expansive as commonly believed.
The notion of a powerful military industrial complex is perpetuated by adversaries like Russia and China to justify their actions, I urge you to reconsider your perspectives based on the evidence provided.

America has a homelessness crisis as record numbers of people are ending up on the streets of a few concentrated city centers. Cities are spending billions of dollars on failing projects to try and solve this problem which has attracted a growing list of companies happy to provide their services… for a price. Helping the homeless has become a lucrative business with multimillion-dollar government contracts awarded every day.
but if there is so much money to be made, do these companies really want a long-term fix?
According to a report by the consulting firm McKinsey and Company, the annual budget for the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority rose from sixty-three million dollars [$63,000,000] in 2015 to eight hundred and eight million dollars [$808,000,000] in 2022, a thirteen HUNDRED percent increase in just seven [7] years… And what did the hardworking taxpayers of Los Angeles get for their money?... the number of homeless people went UP by 56%.
Ignoring for a moment that everybody deserves the right to affordable comfortable shelter, there is something not quiet adding up here. A closer look at individual programs like the “Inside Safe” homelessness reduction policy doesn’t make it much better. The idea of this program was to have social workers offer hotel rooms to homeless individuals while they sought out longer-term housing arrangements. Data collected by the city and compiled by local news outlet the center square found that the plan had cost two hundred and fifty MILLION dollars [$250,000,000] over just one year.
The program only served one thousand four hundred and sixty-three individuals which works out to be seventeen thousand dollars [$17,000] per individual, per MONTH. That is over two hundred thousand dollars [$204,000] every year been spent on ONE individual in ONE program in just ONE city in America. So where is all this money going? and at what point would it just be easier to give homeless people checks for three times the national salary? Well, there are three reasons why cities across America and the rest of the world are spending more money than ever on this problem while not making it any better.
So it’s time to learn How Money Works to find out why throwing money at a complicated problem is not fixing it.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell address, known for its warnings about the growing power of the "military-industrial complex," was nearly two years in the making. This Inside the Vaults video short follows newly discovered papers revealing that Eisenhower was deeply involved in crafting the speech, which was to become one of the most famous in American history. The papers were discovered by the family of Eisenhower speechwriter Malcolm Moos and donated to the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. Eisenhower Library director Karl Weissenbach and presidential historian and Foundation for the National Archives board member Michael Beschloss discuss the evolution of the speech.

Military–industrial complex
The military–industrial complex (MIC), or military–industrial–congressional complex, comprises the policy and monetary relationships which exist between legislators, national armed forces, and the arms industry that supports them. These relationships include political contributions, political approval for military spending, lobbying to support bureaucracies, and oversight of the industry. It is a type of iron triangle. The term is most often used in reference to the system behind the military of the United States, where it gained popularity after its use in the farewell address of President Dwight D. Eisenhower on January 17, 1961, though the term is applicable to any country with a similarly developed infrastructure. In 2011, the United States spent more on its military than the next 13 nations combined.
The term is sometimes used more broadly to include the entire network of contracts and flows of money and resources among individuals as well as corporations and institutions of the defense contractors, The Pentagon, the Congress and executive branch.
